OK, got the LJ backed up to http://telophase.insanejournal.com/ with a surprising minimum of fuss: it told me a few times that my password wasn't right, but when I clicked OK, kept transferring. All the friendslocked posts, because I use a custom filter for them, were posted to the 'family' automagic filter on IJ, and it'd be way much of a hassle to go through and reset them all, so even though it looks like there are no f-locked posts there, they're hiding from everyone. It's my backup anyway.

Will get around to requesting JF accounts for those of you who've asked in the next couple of days. :)

How do you go about backing it up?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-08-06 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
http://brown-betty.livejournal.com/284083.html has two methods. They boil down to:

1) for backing up on your own computer, use LJ-Archive

2) for backing up to another journal, use LJ-Sec

Full details and instructions are in her post. I've done both, because LJ-Archive is not exportable to another journal right now, but it's the only one that also backs up comments, so I've done that (and put a copy on my webserver, to have an offsite backup) to make sure I've got copies of the comments. Then I used LJ-Sec to put my posts on InsaneJournal, just to have an online copy of them.

...I really have to figure out how to back things up with comments on a Linux machine (which may just involve sitting down and seeing if the standard directions work, I guess).

Is it too late to ask for a JF account? ^^

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-08-07 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
It's not too late! I haven't done it yet, because I have a permanent account over at JF, and one of the perks you can ask for as a permanent person is a login to the account creation area. So I aksed for one. It was announced back in 2005, though, so I'm not sure if they're still doing that - if they are, then once I get the login, I'll just create accounts for those who asked. If not, then I'll put the requests in. They want me to keep it to 30-50 account creations per year, which I think I can handle. XD

If you've got or can install Python, here's your solution (http://antennapedia.livejournal.com/266462.html?format=light)!

I do! I'll take a look at this. ^^

:D Someone linked to it from ... er, I totally forgot. Somewhere I was reading earlier today. XD And I remembered the need for Linux and comments from someone.

I used the archiver to save my comments and stuff since I haven't bothered to choose another blog host yet. I'll have to save my memories by different methods although LJ memories won't be worth beans if we're all getting tossed out or leaving.

In the meantime, you can still find me at DeviantArt and YouTube. :-)

So is everyone jumping the LJ ship? Where should we all meet up?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-08-08 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
So far most people seem to be staying, although more people are saving backups Just In Case. GreatestJournal and InsaneJournal are the most popular, and I think GreatestJournal might be more popular than IJ, but it's hard to say.

Okies. Yeah. Those two were recommended to me by another friend too. He and I have decided to stay parked here at LJ until they get around to squashing us.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-08-08 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. I expect that I wouldn't get suspended, since I pretty much don't post anything that controversial, but it had been bothering me for some time that if LJ suffered a catastrophic loss of data, I wouldn't have a backup of most of my online works - they're under no obligation to archive it - and this was the final push that got me to make backups. And if most of my f-list heads somewhere, I'll follow the herd, too. :)

Same here. I've got some important stuff I would be very bummed to lose, too. I am writing a fanfic that has a lot of adult material in it, but none of the stuff the admins are claiming they're hunting for. My friend might get picked on for sharing copyrighted material, but I think most of us fans are guilty of that. I'll be going with the majority of my f-list too.
