A/V tech question...

[livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija is looking for a portable DVD player that can play home-burned DVDs and VCDs, in order not to have to lug her heavy laptop around. Bonus if it's region-free or can be hacked to be so. Any suggestions from the A/V geeks lurking around here?

I saw her post and didn't get a chance to reply, but I've had decent luck with Malata (http://www.malata.com/new_en/products_class.asp?id=19) as a brand of DVD player that plays burnt DVDs and VCDs, and mine is also region-free. Haven't tried one of their portable ones, but it might be a start.

Cool, thanks. :)

I know JList had some region-free ones a while back, but I don't know if they played dvd-r/rws. Wal-Mart had some full-sized (which still isn't very big) home dvd players that played dvd-r/rws, but I don't know if they were region-free.

I can ask the squirrel once he gets out of training if he knows of any...

Thanks!

They need to be the portable type, as it's for taking to Japan and entertaining herself on the plane and in various other places. :)
