A short review...

...of the first half of episode 14 of Melody of Oblivion, just to show you guys what I'm talking about.

Screencaps. No spoilers.

This is Bocca Serenade.

He's in a labyrinth. Yes, I know it looks like a bus. Trust me.

Here's Horu, the Monster Bocca's tracking down. Horu is all down with the baby-eating and is expressing that to Bocca at the moment.

Horu taunts Bocca a little bit more.

And then promptly turns into a wall painting.

When is a door not a door? When it's a baby-eating Monster, apparently.

The door opens on to the Labyrinth's bullring (what? don't all proper labyrinths have a bullring?). Monster Horu gets all cute and intense.

And this is why. BULLJEEP!

This is, I think, the one screencap that will convince everyone reading this who hasn't seen Melody of Oblivion to run out and rent it.

They have an audience!

When Horu is thrown from his bulljeep, he blows his handy-dandy whistle... (sorry for lines, I was capping from my DVD player software)

...to summon his doll army. Not as OMGWTFBBQ?! as the MECHANICAL FIGHTING SOCK MONKEYS from a previous episode, but still.

Horu then escapes, and Bocca runs after him.

...to catch sight of a triumphant, although wounded, Horu...

...making his escape down the handy mine shaft next to the bullring.

Aaaaaand in case anyone is in desperate need of a bulljeep icon...

Now. Doesn't that make you want to watch it when I point out that this is a typical episode, not at all out of character from the series? Maybe a little more action-filled than usual.

Is it a bad thing if I instinctively like the babyeater?

Is this anime complete and released in the US yet?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-08-02 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee. :D

Yup! I'm Netflixing it right now - 5 DVDs total. Not sure when it was released here, but it was originally aired in Japan somewhere between 2002 and 2004.

thanks

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-08-02 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
* 6 DVDs, I meant. I keep thinking I'm watching #3 when I'm actually watching #4. :D

O_o

Wow! I think I need to check that out.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-08-02 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd already popped the DVD out and gotten out of the player software (and it's kind of a pain to search through and episode with it) when I remembered I'd forgotten to cap the scene that had an entire room full of parakeets of DOOOOM for you. XD

Bulljeep!

Awesomeness!! That is almost too much DOOM! And yet, there is no such thing!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-08-02 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
There will never be too much DOOM! XD

...I've been meaning to get back to this show for quite a while (years?). Bulljeep! *_*

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-08-02 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd forgotten quite how cracktastic it was. I'm glad I followed my impulse and put it on my Netflix queue. XD

I think I watched up to ep. 9 or so when it was first coming out, and then I wasn't in the right headspace for it and drifted away. :/ Which is a shame, 'cause I like crack. Back on the list it goes!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-08-02 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that was my problem, too. I seem to be back in it now, since I've now got the last 3 DVDs in my hot little hands and plan on watching them tonight (and this weekend, since my mom has a portable DVD player. XD)

[identity profile] tammylee.livejournal.com 2007-08-02 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahahha!
Now I want to write about bulljeep meeting that dragon jeep from Saiyuki.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-08-02 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
:D There's a bullbus in another episode. XD

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2007-08-02 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Then they could all meet Miyazaki's catbus.

Off-topic, but...

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-08-02 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah - the thing from the travel agency you're supposed to send me? Is my impression that I won't actually be able to board the plane in Dallas without it correct?

Re: Off-topic, but...

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2007-08-02 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoops, sorry! I finally opened it, and it was addressed to you but it was my receipt. But just in case, can you call the travel agency and make sure you have everything you need?

OK, I'll check and see if the e-ticket in the itinerary is all I need.

Uh, wow.

(I like how Ginko in your icon up there appears to be rolling his eye and trying not to associate with the crack below.)

:D Bulljeep!

(Hee, he does, doesn't he? Puts a new meaning to the "They are out there..." text. You sort of want to finish it with something like "...and I am going this way to avoid them.")

Who is the kid in the bleachers, and does Mommy know that he's out of the house in his jammies?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-08-02 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a kid from the future. Or perhaps the past. He may also be a sacrifice to the Labyrinth. Or he may be totally unrelated to anything and show up later.

He did end up sparking an idea in Bocca that ... well, now, that would be telling. :)

Clearly I'm feeling snarkier than usual ... the hero's name sounds like a new product from these guys .... perhaps an exciting new line of primo heat 'n' serve dinners, complete with vegan dessert!

XD

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-08-02 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
The DVDs are named after musical things - Solo, Finale, Coda, etc. - and I keep wondering if 'Bocca' is a Japanesification of something, since his last name is Serenade.

I got no clue. XD Maybe sticking them in a sub-album was enough to do it?
