...Ideas?

I'm now working out the abilities of the zanpakutos in the generator, and need ideas. Not silly ones, unfortunately. :D



My structure -- a number of abilities are related to the name of the zanpakuto in some way. I've got these categories, all of which need more abilities:

(See this post for examples of abilities I've come up with so far. Generator link if you want to look at the names and weapons for more ideas. Just don't tie them too tightly to individual weapons, since that's randomly chosen completely separately from the ability. :D)

air
bird
defense
earth
(spiritual) energy
fire
healing
ice
insect
plant
predator

water

Also, there are zanpakuto that don't fit into those categories. Some just give the wielder extra power or skill with the weapon, or some have abilities that aren't categorizable (i.e. Urahara's blood-based mist/shield/whatever it is).

To give you ideas, here's a list of zanpakuto abilities that I gleaned from Wikipedia:
Bleach zanpakuto abilities:

--energy attack that fires (color) blasts of spiritual power in the shape of a (shape)
     final release - blasts are black & red & path can be controlled
--fire energy blasts and create a blood-mist shield
--creates flames that burn anything (burn X type of material?)
--stab/wound/hit weakens opponent
     second stab/wound/hit kills them
--blade extends and carries full impact
--$weapons rain down from the sky
--doubles the weight of whatever it strikes, cumulative effect
--giant one-eyes floating manta ray that heals people in its stomach
--heals wounds as gauge on hilt fills up. when gauge is full, deals all wounds absorbed in single attack - subsequent attacks have the healing restriction lifted
--complete hypnosis
--focus for spiritual energy, creating (color) blasts. can also compress power into single massive energy ball
--scattered blades (cherry blossom petals) controlled by wielder
     bankai - two abilities: first, blades are compressed into 4 rows of swords around wielder & his opponent. second: compresses all blades into a single sword and gives the wielder a pair of white wings made of petal-blades he can direct in single attack
--can be used as a whip 3 tiems before returning to sword form. bankai - fires dense blast of spiritual energy.
--ability to control wind
--projects high-pitched tone, overwhelming hearing and rendering listeners unconscious. bankai - --creates groups of blades that rain like locusts
--freezes everything the crescent blade wraps around. bankai has two techniques: stabbed opponent freezes and shatters, and pillars of ice evelop an enemy
-- blade dissolves into ash that the wielder controls, cutting through anything. Ash can form into a cat or leopard-like animal
-- becomes increasingly more powerful as time continues, red gauge in hilt fills up. when full, final release emerges (larger, more powerful weapons)
-- absorbs opponent's spiritual energy
-- generates blinding light. also generate pulse of light and fires blades of light. Orb of light can surround an enemy and crush him
-- paralyzes opponent. bankai releases monster that breathes out poisoned air. if wielder stabs himself, he turns into liquid.
-- control over varying combinations of water and lightning
-- control over water
-- creates circle of influence around target, continuing upward and freezing everything within circle upward until it reaches the sky. second technique driected version of 1st, creating massive wave of ice. third technique: if zanpakuto breaks, it reforms in ice.
-- creates tornadoes
-- drains opponent's spiritual energy, which can use to heal wielder's energies
-- creates huge barrier that drains opponents' senses
-- generates fire - short-range explosive blasts or concentrated into fireballs and thrown
--unmatchable speed


I think I'm not going to bother with bankai abilities or forms, because that would require way too much effort. Anyone using this to generate zanpakutos will just have to make their own bankai up, or borrow another shikai. Most Soul Reapers haven't achieved bankai yet, anyway.

From how far afield would you accept suggestions? Are non-Bleach sources valid? I have reams of RPG system materials (D&D, Rolemaster, Hero, GURPs, White Wolf Storyteller), for example, and a number of Samurai Deeper Kyo characters have special attacks (which are used more like Bleach kido techniques) that might be suitable - leaving out some of the godlike stuff that shows up in the last several volumes.

Heck, I don't care. Admittedly, it'd be nice if they're not immediately recognizable as from something specific - i.e., we can have it shoot small energy projectiles, but not have Sanzo's nen gun, if that makes sense. :) (Hakkai's chi attacks and healing are terrifically generic, and a weapon that extends on command like Goku's staff is also fairly generic)

OK, I'm trying not to duplicate things you have already, but some of these may overlap some of the already-given ones. Also, I have some notes about where people may have seen these before:



  • Absorb energy to point of death (Akari's "Air Vampire" in SDK; Yumichika's was only to "point of weakness")

  • Absorb/dispell kido attack,

  • Boost another's kido attack,

  • Boost another's physical stamina (allowing that one to take more damage from attacks)

  • Absorb another's damage, essentially healing that person (ala "The Empath" in ST:TOS; this is also a D&D spell: "Aid Another")

  • Reflect and/or redirect kido attack

  • Blast of water (D&D "Water Bolt"; Shinrei in SDK)

  • Blast/bolt of fire/heat (D&D firebolt; also Gandalf in LotR)

  • Blast/bolt of air (at high level, can manifest as concussion damage, including internal bleeding: Kyo's "Wind" attacks in SDK)

  • Blast/bolt of electricity/energy (D&D lightning bolt; Sasuke Jr.'s "Raikoken" in SDK)

  • Blast/flash of light (blinding)

  • Blast of sound

  • Blade of flame

  • Blade of ice

  • Blade of light (light saber; Helen's "living blade" in Diana Wynne Jones' _Homeward Bounders_)

  • Missiles/bullets of ice

  • Missiles/bullets of energy/ki (D&D "Magic Missile"; Sanzo's nen gun)

  • Opponent falls into deep unconsciousness/coma

  • Opponent suffers severe nerve pain - no actual damage, but unless willpower is extreme, opponent is immobolized (Rolemaster "Word of Pain")

  • Manifest Zapakuto Soul - Zanpakuto's spiritual component appears and fights as an ally

  • Area of earth or stone turns to clinging, immobilizing mud

  • Cracks (even the most minute) in any solid are expanded to their maximum (can essentially shatter stone or metal) (Rolemaster "Cracks Call")

  • Cloud of sparks delivers electrical damage for as long as it lasts (Rolemaster "Stun Cloud")

  • Wielder's appearance becomes blurred and hard to target (D&D "Blur"; variant: Wielder's appearance matches the surroundings, chameleonlike, but effect is the same)





* The difference between "entanglement" and "cage" powers is degree of confinement and number of targets: entanglement renders one opponent incapable of movement (i.e., he is trussed up entirely), cages surround up to a given number of opponents (or enclose a given area), but those confined can move about within the enclosure, allowing them to heal comrades confined with them, etc.

  • Wielder can run on shifting or unstable surfaces (including ice, sand, etc.) as if on solid ground (Rolemaster "Traction")

  • Wielder can run on narrow surfaces (ledges, logs) as if on solid ground (Rolemaster "Edge Running")

  • All opponent's sensory inputs (including sense of balance) distorted massively, causing immobility or even collapse (Rolemaster "Mind Shock")

  • Wielder can use/channel another's kido skills (can use this to forcibly wrest another's power, OR limit it to voluntary sharing of the power; Rolemaster "Channeling" concept)

  • Wielder can "sink" into solid surfaces/objects; can extend it to allow "walking through walls" (Rolemaster "Passing" and "Passing True")

  • Wielder can track another by detecting traces of ki/spiriual energy

  • Wielder can detect living minds within a given radius, regardless of non-enchanted/enhanced barriers, such as walls, and regardless of whether wielder can actually see (Rolemaster "Detect Presence")

  • Wielder can become invisible (all game systems, numerous fictions ... )

  • Wielder can become undetectable by any normal senses

  • Wielder can redirect missiles fired by others

  • Wielder can control opponent's physical movements (Mahiro's spider puppetry in SDK)

If you think of anything that has to do with plants, let me know, because that's the shortest list so far. It can be only vaguely related to them - for example in the manga, Byakuya's blade shatters into a cloud of blades that resemble sakura petals.

Well, that humongo list had an entangling vines thingie ... here are some more, mostly gleaned from D&D and Rolemaster "Druid"/"Animist" powers/spells:



  • Wielder's skin becomes like flexible tree bark, acting as armor (D&D "Barkskin")

  • Wielder can command plants to grow near instantaneously, forming cage/barrier (both systems, under various names)

  • Wielder can pass through entangling vegetation without hinderance, leaving no tracks

  • Wielder can perceive anything within a given radius, as long as there are plants (even grass) in that area;

  • Wielder can emit spores that have a damaging effect (Santera in SDK had this - damage was that anything touched by the spores melted; a less gruesome alternative would be to handle it like the sleep poppies in Wizard of Oz )

  • Wielder can regenerate lopped limbs (as a plant can)

Causes temporary numbness in the victim upon impact, disguising the damage dealt by subsequent blows. (Healing? I like this ability because it is SO EASY to underestimate. Perfect for the fourth division!

Here are some from Darker than Black:

Reverses gravity for up to ten seconds.
Discharges up to 10,000 volts of electric charge.
Unleashes hurricane-strength winds with a range of up to 20 meters.
Turns any exposed liquid, including blood, into stone.
Summons a cloud of wasp-like insects whose stings have a euphoric effect.
Body parts touched by this weapon explode.

This is fun! I may add more later.

And, yeah, the healing ones are great, even if they don't do any damage - in an equally-matched team fight, the side that's got the advantage is the one with the guy who can heal everyone else quickly. :D

Do you want some weird abilities from Jojo? Produces a map of the surrounding area, but the wielder must destroy a $300 camera each time <-- sadly, this is one of the LESS bizarre abilities.

Sound:
Synchronizes repetitive sounds to frequencies which capable of shattering and opponent's weapon.

Misc:
Allows the wielder to strike with inhuman precision.

Fire/Water/Ice/Earth:
Manifests a flame in the shape of an eagle. (Or a dragon, or a wolf, or...repeat for other elements.)

Plant/Insect?
Unleashes a poisonous mist in all directions. The wielder is immune to the poison, although the wielder's allies might not be.

Healing:
Strikes impart health and energy rather than damage.

Water:
Water from the surrounding atmosphere coalesces into a cutting blade.

Earth:
Surrounds the user in a strong repulsive magnetic field.

Plant:
Gradually saps the energy of all opponents within range.

I think there should be weapon that makes trailing paths of light you can use to wrap up your opponent. With a bow ♥. It would be so pretty!

I can modify the map one, though - produces a map of a radius of, say, 100 yards, but can only be used once a day or something like that. I like powers with limitations - makes 'em more fun to use. XD

But can you modify "produces a zipper on any surface"? What about "creates a baby assassin targeted toward one person, which must be taught the proper methods of effective murder"? Or "transforms opponents into stackable cubes, although they remain alive"?

Plant:
Covers any exposed, non-living surface with a deadly mold.

Induces a severe allergic reaction in up to one opponent at a time. (XD.)

Misc:
Narrows the focus of the wielder, minimizing the impact of distractions.

Air:
Shoots bullets made of air at high velocity.
