yeesh

Just spent three hours wrestling with a problem in Wordpress that had stymied me for weeks* to discover through a fortuitous combination of Google search terms that the real problem was not Wordpress or, as I thought, Dreamhost disabling a particular command for security reasons, but an over-vigilant Apache security module dedicated to rooting out spammers.** Which is all fine and dandy for comment spam, but not really necessary when I'm posting a page. But I managed to figure out how to disable it for the specific page-posting file and not for any other files in the whole Wordpress install. I feel much relief at this.

* Technically. This was the second time I'd messed with it, after giving up a few weeks back on my first try.

** Which gave an interesting 503 error, which says that the server's too busy, rather than any sort of error that told me what the hell was going on.

If I wanted to set up a Wordpress blog on your space and I had a sort of vague idea of which modules I wanted to include, would you help me with any problems that might hypothetically come up? I've been thinking about this for a while (since before Strikethrough) but Wordpress kind of scares me.

Sure!

WP is pretty easy to mess with once you get the hang of it. (Not that I've tried doing my own theme yet or anything; I'm mostly messing with the functionality.) The only thing I can think of at first is that if you want to do a DH one-click install, you'll need to put it into a directory by itself with nothing else in it. If you're willing to install and upgrade it yourself, then you'll have to manually install. Which isn't very hard: I've done both. I had to do a manual install on the main magatsu.net directory, since that's already got a bunch of stuff in it that I didn't want to move. :)

A directory like sd.magatsu.net/blog? Automatic installations are good ^^. I've been waiting for my laptop to come back from the shop before I try anything, since there's a limit to what I can do on the library's computers. (And I've been trying to figure out what to put on the blog -- reposts of my better livejournal posts, I guess, but a surprising number of them aren't portable.)

Yup, a dir like that would work. And the one-click installs/upgrades work wonderfully.

Can't help you with going from LJ to the blog, but I just found a plugin that copies everything you put on WP to your LJ or LJ_code-derived (like GreatestJournal or Journalfen) blog. Check my LJ for an example.

I had a wild hair at one point to make a manga review site, which got put aside once I came to terms with the fact that I hate writing reviews and I couldn't count on making my LJ friends supply me with content. :) But there's a few book review plugins out there which look nifty.

You can also port the entire contents of your livejournal over to Wordpress. I might do that, and then edit out all the posts or posts or posts where I natter on about fanfiction, post memes, or shoutout to livejournal users. ^^; Or maybe I'll just copy-paste manually. One thing I noticed, not that I didn't know this before, is that I often cram a lot of different topics into a single post. On LJ this makes sense (don't spam the friendslist!) but for WP I'll probably want to split these posts up.

Charmian has a list of the LJ-to-WP plugins she's found useful here (http://yuzutea.net/log/?cat=3).

then edit out all the posts or posts or posts

"and then edit out all the posts or parts of posts", I mean.
