A book on chronic pain as a feminist issue and a short interview with the author, via Bookslut. - I'll have to read it. I note that I've never had a doctor tell me my pain is all in my head, but I have had a doctor who told me that the pain from my back was absolutely real, who then didn't bother to prescribe me any painkillers or muscle relaxants because she said it ahd stopped spasming. (UH, NO IT HADN'T!) It was the first time I'd thrown my back out, and the worst time barring the current long-term chronic pain (the current pain is less, but it's lasted for months), and I didn't know enough to insist that spending two weeks screaming in pain every time I had to bend the least little bit wasn't right.

I've been pushing Planetes as the gateway manga for some time now. Shawn Hoke is, too. And he includes a list of various blogs and sites that review manga, most of which I suscribe to via Bloglines. (via Love Manga)

Love Manga also points out commentary as to why schools and parents should allow kids to read fluff.

They also point out that you can read the first issues of EigoMANGA's two manga anthologies Rumble Pak and Sakura Pak online. I've wanted to take a look at these, but apaprnetly EigoMANGA's choosing to distribute them only through comic stores, and frankly there's not a comic store anywhere within a 30-minute drive of me. I may need to get [livejournal.com profile] tesstrosa to hook me up with these if I like the first two issues.

I normally skip most of the library feeds I'm subscribed to because they refer to each other in tight circles most of the time, plus all the BLOGGING, RSS, AND PODCASTING IS THE WAVE OF THE FUTURE IF YOUR LIBRARY ISN'T DOING IT YOU'RE GOING TO FALL BEHIND!! polemicizing is a bit tedious. But there's occasionally interesting things like the press release about how Online Programming for All Libraries (OPAL) is offering audio recordings of its web-based programming and training online. Includes book discussions, interviews, tours of various bits of the Library of Congress, and simple training in various online/technology things (which none of you need). They're supposedly going to be adding more. Via The Handheld Librarian

Just say the word and I'll see what I can do for you.

If you could get me issue 2 of each, I could then decide whether or not they're worth getting on a more regular basis. My first impulse is "eh," as you know if you've read my LJ today, but I'm willing to give them each another try. :) Let me know if you can & what I'd owe ya.
