Hrm.

Can anyone tell me why I hated this picture so much last fall?

I went back to it tonight to see if I could redo the sand castle, because I recalled hating it with the fiery passion of a thousand burning suns last fall, when I did it, so much so that I gave up on the picture, and ... I don't hate it now. It's not perfect, but it's not worth changing.

I'm also marveling at how my inking has changed from then to now, but I'm not going to re-ink it: I think it calls for just some color slapped on and woo-hoo! Another print for A-Kon!

[livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija's fault also, I seem to recall.

I don't think the character is quite on the same plane as the castle. Or is that what you're talking about?

No, it was the design and handling of the sandcastle that I loathed.

I think you were just sick to death of trying to figure out how to do the sand, actually.

That might have been it. Ah well, it's good enough for government work. :D

I wonder if a few floating grains of sand that aren't connected yet to anything would improve the castle, to make it look more like it's still coalescing. Or something.

Honestly, though? I bet people love it.

I was thinking of going through with a teeny eraser and lightening up the sand a bit. But it's nowhere near as awful as it was in my memory, so hey. :)

i think thats a good idea.

I like it, but some scattering sand sounds like a good idea ... . The rendering on the sand castle is so much more detailed than the figure, which is all black-and-white line, but I don't know what's best done about that.

I think that was my big problem before - I couldn't figure out how to draw a simpler sandcastle and it drove me nuts.

(Photos, photos everywhere on the WWW ...very few line drawings ... )

Looks like most skip rendering the sand almost entirely and depend on the context/environment (shells, a toy shovel, shoreline in the background) to carry the meaning ... .

One thing I noticed, looking at the photos and the few drawings: the line at the base of your castle where the wall joins the unformed sand on the left face is awfully distinct ... part of the sandcastle-ness of anything but those humongo professionally built ones is the way the sandcastle, around the base, harks back to its origins as just a heap of sand (the right face shows more the sort of thing I'm seeing). Perhaps simplifying/partially eliminating the texturing on the still-solid bits toward the base ?

Also maybe show a bit of sand heaped up around his feet where his shoes have pushed it away, to put him into the same environment?

(I feel impertinent, somehow, about suggesting that you change things ...   :-[   )

Dear Lord of mercy.

They have you now don't they.

O.o

Since I'm on a roll: http://static.flickr.com/99/290048598_d102b86851.jpg

I initially suggested Sakura dipping Sasuke which I still think would be awesome, but I think almost any couple would work as long as there's some kind of reversal, gender-based or otherwise, as to who's being bent over backwards.

Itachi and Kisame!

Yeah, see, it looks fine to me...

:) Thanks.

Without reading the replies of others, I seem to recall you were displeased with the look of the sand castle lines... felt that they didn't shoe enough grain, I suppose. It may have just been the sand texturing. *shrug*
