KILL ME BEFORE I EVER DO AN 11 X 17" PIECE IN MARKER AGAIN.

ETA: Uploaded the color-corrected version this time. :)

omg cute~ (I'm always amazed at gradations, esp on skin, done in markers, since I can't ever get mine to behave the way I want it to...)

It reminds me of Poirot (whose work is making news in a lot of places these days)

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-20 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
THanks. :)

I envy people who can use markers.

I envy you more because you can use markers *well*

Great job!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-20 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! The Copic marker book is what really helped - it gave a lot of tips for doing it.

(And this being the cleaned-up version, you don't get to see where I slopped red into the fingers or anything like that XD)

[identity profile] pzb.livejournal.com 2007-05-20 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Beatiful job on keeping the large areas smooth. That's where I'm still having issues.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-20 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I had to do the background with about 3 layers - the last one with a circular motion. You can see what one layer looks like in the glass. :)

And of course this is the cleaned-up version, so I erased all the bits where I slopped red into her fingers or got a touch of purple into her face, and I darked the hair to a flat black. XD

[identity profile] tirwen.livejournal.com 2007-05-20 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
It's gorgeous!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-20 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Thnaks!

[identity profile] tammylee.livejournal.com 2007-05-20 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Awesome job!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-20 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
THankyou!

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2007-05-20 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
That's gorgeous! I love the glass she's holding.

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2007-05-20 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
So, what's next?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-20 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no idea. I'm looking through a couple of collections of fanart that [livejournal.com profile] keelieinblack sent me for inspiration.

I've got a pic with Mello and Matt sort of starting to simmer in the back of my brain, but it's mostly because I want to try this really nifty gritty coloring style with markers (as seen on the cover of Banya the Explosive Delivery Man (http://libraries.darkhorse.com/reviews/firstlooks.php?theid=13-966) vol 2). It uses colored pencils along with markers, although that cover is also using watercolors in spots.

Old, but lots of interesting and/or commercial suggestions in comments here: http://telophase.livejournal.com/638261.html#cutid1

[identity profile] marith.livejournal.com 2007-05-20 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh, nice! I love the crushed velvet dress especially, you can really see texture. And also the gradation on the flower petals.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-20 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! The flower gradation is slightly more subtle in the original - but this scanner is still better than my old one - but it still looks OK so I'm OK with it. XD

[identity profile] azure-reverie.livejournal.com 2007-05-20 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Yuuko looks so good in red. Lovely piece. (But, ya, 11x17 is big)

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-20 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. Very big. Bit I need big prints for my table and big originals for my art show panels. I think the rest of my big pieces this year will be pencil, though, because I can churn those out easily. :)

[identity profile] the-z.livejournal.com 2007-05-20 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Huge marker pieces are pure death x_x But you handled this one extremely well by the looks of things. I'm sure it'll look fantastic in the art show.

I recently did a 5x7 marker piece that took me three hours. It seems like such a long time to work on a tiny piece. So, with that in mind, how's your back feeling?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-20 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Remarkably well. I found a smaller art board thing, and was able to prop it on my lap with my feet up on an ottoman, so I wasn't bending over it as much as I normally would. :)

It took me about 2-2.5 days to do this. Not sure how many hours, but I designed and inked on one day, then did the background yesterday and Yuuko today. AARG. :)

That background was gone over about 3 times, ad after I had covered it all very carefully not marking over any of the leaves or flowers, I realized that I needed to do *them* as well, so that the colors I put on top of them would be harmonized with the background, so I ahd to go back yet again and color in the pattern. It would have gone so much faster if I'd realized that at first. XD And I killed my Colorless Blender: I really need to order a refill tank of that stuff.

[identity profile] the-z.livejournal.com 2007-05-20 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I go through blenders like candy. Those things are invaluable (and expensive :/ ) Luckily, Copic markers have been showing up more and more at cons so when I run out there, it's convenient shopping!

I hope you make good sales off prints of this.

[identity profile] urbi-et-orbi.livejournal.com 2007-05-20 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I love the hair piece and the background <3

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-20 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
:D Thank you!

[identity profile] kulimar.livejournal.com 2007-05-21 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Very nice work. Glad to see there are others out there using Copics (Maybe they'll start selling them in art shops so I don't have to go broke importing them :p)

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-21 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks!

And they're starting to carry them in some Hobby Lobby stores, if there's any near you. (I managed to make a killing when I found that a number were mispriced at my store, and bought all of the mispriced ones for about $2 less than they should have been priced. XD)

[identity profile] kulimar.livejournal.com 2007-05-21 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
That's awesome. I'll have to check to see if there are any of those stores around me. Thanks.

I think it looks good! Markers are the devil. I like that you were able to keep to a similar colour scheme that CLAMP uses too.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-21 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! Yeah, I really like the colors they use.

[identity profile] rilina.livejournal.com 2007-05-21 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
This is gorgeous! I especially love the texture on the dress.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-21 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! The dress turned out way better than I expected. XD

[identity profile] rurounitriv.livejournal.com 2007-05-21 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
It may have been exhausting (and I don't even want to think how many markers that took) but the results are well worth it! That's one gorgeous pic.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-21 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you!

[identity profile] readsalot.livejournal.com 2007-05-21 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Beautiful! I like the shadows on Yuuko's arm, and the way her hair falls over her hip.

By the way, I think the guy who does Megatokyo sells Copic markers in his store, but I don't know how his prices compare to other stores. (And I hope I'm not being obnoxious by saying that.)

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-21 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks!

He may, but I think that store is way over on the other side of Dallas from me, and is over an hour to drive. :D I haven't been there in years because they never seemed very nice to me when I went in. (And ironically I once overheard the clerks talking about how The Other Anime Shop in town was always very standoffish to customers and how they were always friendly, but I experienced the exact opposite every single time. :D)

[identity profile] readsalot.livejournal.com 2007-05-21 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
I'm thinking of the Megatokyo.com strip; their store is online, attached to that site, and I think the guy who does the strip lives in Michigan.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-21 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. And of the TWO people who started the strip, one lives in Dallas and runs an anime store.

[identity profile] readsalot.livejournal.com 2007-05-21 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry. I only know the strip from the website, and I don't participate in the forums, so the breakup of the principals is something that feels very distant to me. I apologize for striking a nerve.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-21 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not a nerve, more that I don't actually read the strip and know nothing of the website and it wouldn't occur to me in the least that a webcomic would sell art supplies.

[identity profile] rayechu.livejournal.com 2007-05-21 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
Wow!
That picture came out beautifully. I can't believe that is all done with markers. Like a bunch of other people I am in marker envy.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-21 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
:) Thanks!

Wow!

> stares at hair some more, especially over the dress, and the shadows ... <

(Heh. I'd buy it.)

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-21 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! :D

[identity profile] araminty.livejournal.com 2007-05-21 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, that's really lovely. The sofa and the dress look so nice and velvety, and I love her expression and the fabulous background. All those little leaves! - argh, must have taken ages!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-21 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Took me most of a day just for the background. *twitch* *twitch* *twitch*

Thanks!
