Referral logs

I love my referral logs, because they tell me where people come from to visit various sites I own. So I found out that yesterday the Cool Bits Generator was mentioned in the blogs over at TechRepublic, in a post titled Where Sci-Fi Channel movies *really* come from.

What's scary is that you might be onto something. Sadly, when it comes to Skiffy Channel movies, it's a perfect case of Riddell's Law, where any sufficiently developed incompetence is indistinguishable from conspiracy. Most of those films were made either as tax shelters or because you had some Cat Piss Man who thought he was really onto something (most of the history of Bad Cinema involves science fiction fans who assume that they can be filmmakers), and Skiffy buys them cheap because (a) no other cable channel wants them and (b) it's cheaper than paying for their own content. After all, why spend the money for famous genre films that might actually cost a bit for licensing when something as bad as Dinocroc! or Free Enterprise is practically given to you?

This is the reason that I don't mind that my cable company sends me the SciFi channel with messed-up reception. They do the same with the Discovery Channel, which annoys me because I like to watch the Mythbusters blow things up, but I don't miss SciFi. (The Discovery Channel reception has gotten mysteriously better recently, but for the past two years it's been a cycle of: phone them, they send a tech out, it's somewhat fixed for a day and a half, it goes bad again, phone them.)

This is one of several things I really miss about working on our public web site (vs. the intranet site, my current assignment). It was such fun figuring out how the big upticks in hits were happening, and who was saying what about us, and where.

I had eleven visitors yesterday thanks to your post on the Gaiman boards. :) But 15 came from the TechRepublic link, so it won. XD

My daughter, who also haunts those boards, says I put it in the wrong place. Quote: "Only really serious people look at Other Authors, Mom!"

But the Cool Bits stories are much better than a SciFi movie!
