Kyo Kara Maoh & Dragon Keeper & Other Random Things

So I received my Kyo Kara Maoh DVDs this weekend and spent a good deal of time mainlining it as I lettered, which means I wasn't following it *too* closely. The DVDs are boots, which i suspected from the price, but it's a bit wonky because the box and the menus have that ineffable bootleg charm (the subtitle is misspelled on the box as God (?) Save Ur King and the active menu item glowy thing is usually some distance away from the actual menu item), but they've got the official English subtitles and dubs.

The story is decent, not going to win any major awards, but let's face it: you don't watch KKM for plot. You watch it for the crack. And if there's one thing I've learned, it's that any anime is made immensely better by the inclusion of inflatable ninja sheep, and this series alone could fuel a huge cracktastic-bits generator. The crack content tends to dip a bit when it's trying to follow actual plot, but inevitably returns.

I'm not finished yet - I've just seen the episode where Yuuri's friend has disclosed some information about himself :D (around ep 30-31?), so no spoilers for me, plzkthnx.

---

Additionally, my most recent lunchtime book was Carole Wilkinson's Dragon Keeper, a fantasy YA book set in an ancient China with dragons. A young slave girl who works for the Imperial Dragon Keeper flees with one of the dragons. A fun read, and I recommend it particularly to [livejournal.com profile] oyceter because the girl has a pet rat. :D

---

Am temtped to claim some art prompts for [livejournal.com profile] springkink, but as it's mostly for A-Kon purposes and thus I need the results public in time for the co, it would be a Bad Idea to waste time on it at the moment. But if claims are still open after the con, maybe I'll do it.

---

Am also tempted to make a random story generator from [livejournal.com profile] eliade's list o' fanfic kinks, tropes, and cliches, but as it's a rather NC-17 list in points, I'd need to work out a way to force people to go through a warning page before hitting the generator itself. I've got a few ideas on how to do that. Looking over the list, I think the logic involved in creating the generator itself would be similar to the Cool Bits generator.

---

Off to lunch now. Hopefully this entry will have garnered comments by the time I get back because I am bored at work today, but I fear that most of the friendslist have wandered off at the end of the semester and aren't reading or posting to LJ at the moment. :)

[identity profile] tokyoghoststory.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
maan what a list. picking stuff out my oc's do on it is lulz. i'm totally in love with your generators, rofl. i need to actually write one of the ones from it. that would be glorious.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee. :D

[identity profile] vom-marlowe.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd love to see the fanfic kinks turned into a generator. Hee! Also, I will be proofreading the PDF you sent later today, after I have cleaned the dreaded away from the office inbox. Arrrgh. Sigh. Arrrrrgh.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I was thinking about it at lunch, and I think I've got how to set it up so anyone coming to the URL for the first time will get a warning page and any subsequent reloading on that visit won't bring it up again, which would be utterly annoying. Simple, elegant, and without cookies. XD

Thanks! Having a third set of eyes looking at it will help - I know there's things in PBR that escaped me and Rachel because we were both so intimately involved with the script. Mostly on the order of mechanical problems in the lettering. :)

[identity profile] smithereen.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
My only complaint about Kyo Kara Maoh is I wish they'd stop trying to have a plot at all. Hee. Whenever it gets plotty and earnest I just get bored, but I try to tolerate it until it returns to giving me the sweet, sweet crack.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! It's "Oh lord, someone trying to kill someone else or take over the kingdom, *yawn* bored bored bored INFLATABLE NINJA SHEEP!"

Honestly. The writers never quite fully understood that the main appeal of the show was Gunther attempting to snuggle Yuuri's dirty clothes and the like, and just insisted on putting plot in to the ultimate detriment of the show.

[identity profile] darkelf105.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Hehehe, Gunter is love. Angsty Conrad is not.

[identity profile] darkelf105.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah plot seems to equal emo Conrad and that just drags all the other pretty, pretty men and boys down.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I want more dour Gwendel and his love of all things cute and cuddly!

[identity profile] darkelf105.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah. And the knitting. I was inspired to re-watch the first season last night and totally noticed that at one point when our hunky man babe Gwendel was frustrated, he made knitting motions. I almost fell out of my chair. I still love "It's a kitty cat". When gruff, stern-like warrior men talk about kitty cats, I go all mushy. Plus it's full of crack, extra awesome. I love that damn ninja sheep. And cross dressing "I'm hot to trot" Yousak. Who might be my favorite character after Gwendel.

[identity profile] cicer.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)

Oh man, someone has an icon of that moment, and it's hilarious. I crack up everytime I see it. O Gwendal. He loves him some cute, that man. XD

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved "It's a kitty cat"! XDD

[identity profile] darkelf105.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
OH! And I forgot, the moment that I replayed over and over, when Yuuri give him that dolphin key chain and he clasps it in both hands and just look so sweet, but like he's trying real hard to convince himself that it's for his sword or something....and when he first notices it on Yuuri's belt....Oh, I love Gwendel.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeeeeeeeeeeessssssss!!!

[identity profile] darkelf105.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Gwendel oh Gwendel. I can't wait till you hit the second season! So much awesome, but I don't wanna spoil.

[identity profile] tirwen.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Gwendel ftw!

[identity profile] cicer.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
TRUER WORDS WERE NEVER SPOKEN. No emo Conrad plzkthx. I'd rather spend that time watching Gunter be cracktastic and insane and awesome. ♥ Gunter.

[identity profile] darkelf105.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Conrad is just lucky he's pretty good looking or I'd be really angry that he took up so much of the show. My boyfriend just mutes him when he comes on. He's much nicer when he's not talking and the only thing you half to do is look at him.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I know! He's like the token boring character or something. At one point in the dub* he makes that stupid pun in an attempt to cheer Yuuri up, and in the English dub and sub it's rendered as "Well, I guess you Canada!" It's driving me insane to know what the original Japanese pun was.

* Hey, I can't read subtitles and work on Spindrift at the same time. XD

[identity profile] darkelf105.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I watch it dubbed because I write while it's on...or am going to bed and am hoping for very nice dreams.....And yeah, that was bad, and I've been wondering, too. At least Yuuri threatened to jump out the window because it was so bad. Ah, little Yuuri, my boyfriends favorite scene is the portrait of him where he screaming about Pumpkin pants and girly pinkies. Ah, so much awesome in that show. [livejournal.com profile] rayechu told me that's there is/or is going to be an OVA. I just haven't had time to check that particular rumor out.

[identity profile] cicer.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
ONE OF US, ONE OF US! :D I adore KKM, so much. It's chock-full of hilarious crack and, though I gather that some people find the characters irritating, I think they're adorable. I want to tell you all the bits I found funniest and cutest, but I have a crappy memory for episodes, and I can't remember if those bits were pre-ep 30 or not. I don't want to spoil you, so I shall wait. 8D God, I love that series, though.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
:D The DVD set I've got is only the first 39 episodes, so I shall have to resort to begging people for others, since my ISP has cracked down on Bittorrent again.

I downloaded the first episode a couple of years ago, thought it was amusing, and forgot about it. I put it on my Netflix queue last year, watched the first 2 DVDs and fell in love with the crack, then got distracted by something shiny and forgot about it again until I watched the 3rd DVD. Whereupon I resolved to introduce [livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija to it, because she MUST see the crack, and found this particular set. XD

[identity profile] cicer.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
[livejournal.com profile] katmaxwell uploaded a whole bunch of KKM here (http://community.livejournal.com/campersfuckoff/668587.html)! It's all the way through episode 65, and I think she the last few eps up somewhere else, but if not I have them and can upload them for you if all else fails?

Believe it or not, KKM's plot actually ends up being somewhat respectable in its own right as the story goes on. Though you watch it for the crack, not the plot, as the plot progresses it makes you want to watch more, instead of going "okay stfu plot back to crack nao plz".

And it has really good continuity, in terms of plot, which you really get to see as things move along. Comes of being based on actual novels and FOLLOWING said novels closely, I would imagine. ;)

[identity profile] louiselux.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I would dearly love a random generator made from that list! I am sure I would probably use it nearly every day. :D

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I suspect there will be one before too long, as I have conquered the problem of setting up the script so that when people link to it, it produces a warning first, and after you click through you don't see the warning again. (well, until you go away from the page and then come back.)

I'd start working on the data entry, except that I'm at work and I don't really want a file with all those terms sitting on my hard drive. :)

>> I don't really want a file with all those terms sitting on my hard drive. <<

Cautionary tale: Once upon a time we had a little interactive FAQ feature on our agency's public website, built by an outside contractor. It included an HTML form for feedback.

A few weeks after it was posted, we got an e-mail in the webmaster mailbox saying that one of our pages had been blocked by a piece of NetNanny-type software. It was the feedback page.

Turns out that the overzealous contractor had wanted to spare our poor little Fed sensibilities and had set up some Javascript screening so that naughty words wouldn't be passed through the comments form to our virgin e-mailboxes. The trouble is, it was client-side Javascript ... so that all those naughty words were actually in the code for the page, even though they weren't visible ....

We decided we'd rather have cussin' and such in our incoming mail than have our pages blocked by parental guidance software!

So you never know what's looking for naughtiness on your systems ...

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! At least our comment spam blocking stuff is in server-side scripts. Still have to be careful when updating the blocking terms - don't want to block any comment containing the word "analysis," for example. XD

analysis, LOL! Ahh, those who search for dirt shall ever find it ... .

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
:) I almost accidentally blocked that one, when I was adding terms from a recent spate of spam that made it through. But I realized just in time that if someone was writing to complain that the Journal of Chemical Analysis or suchlike were down, we'd never know.

Mind you, "we'd never know" isn't really true - all spam gets flagged and sent to the head of Systems, who checks it to make sure nothing's accidentally blocked - I suppose it's possible that someone may be requesting a book or article on Viagra or Cialis - and sends it on to its appropriate recipient if it is.

Kink Generator! Awesome!

Also, ooo, I think I actually have that Wilkinson on my shelves somewhere. I will move it up the to-be-read list now.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
The focus is mostly on the relationship between the girl and the dragon, of course, but the rat plays its part, too. :)

[identity profile] derjmeister.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
KKM is the win. I've spent many, many (I actually typoed that as "manly" just now...my freudian slip is showing) miles running to that. My love for Gwendal is like a truck...a big mack truck with shoulders the size of Jupiter's largest moon. BERSERKER! So who dares me to draw Gwendal/Josak smut? Because I will totally do that except I'm not sure both their shoulders will fit on the paper, for that is a hefty dose of manbeef.

Maybe an "AU" fanart in which they're both truck drivers? I think that deserves its own doujinshi anthology. WHO'S WITH ME?!?! (if you do a kink story generator, plz to include truck drivings)

Also I can't help but love Wolfram, who is a brat, but who is also the sweetest brat ever with his pink nighty. He is so unapologetically himself that he has my deepest respect, and although I am not prone to going AWWWWW unless there's puppies or kitties, Wolfram is as cute as puppies. My love for him is platonic until he grows up, however...I bet he will be very pretty.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I dare you! (I bet Gwendel knits Josak a fluffy sweater! XD) If you use 11 x 17" paper they might fit. XD

I was first introduced to KKM over in a thread on fandom_wank somewhere, with the words "Bitchiest. Uke. Ever." linked to a picture of Wolfram. I also warmed up to him as the series progressed. :D

[identity profile] sparkylibrarian.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
KKM! Fabulous KKM! If I wasn't making car payments (sob!) I'd be buying the new season. As it is, I have to wait for Netflix to send them.

I tried to get my brother to watch KKM, telling him there was yuri in it.

Wouldn't you know-- he doesn't trust me! And he went and looked it up! And he was all, "Those are all dudes."

[identity profile] tirwen.livejournal.com 2007-05-14 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I love the sheep! I haven't finished it, either... but yeah, cracktastic ;)

BTW, I don't suppose you might know where I could track down a bunny doll like Nii's? *hopeful look*

Figured it was better to comment here than in something more recent. K'niggit showed up some of KKM! way back when, and I found the crack highly amusing - though occasionally over the top (Bee-bears? Snow-Gunter and the doll?). I purchased all of Season 1 on individual disks for reasonable pricing... only to find that one of the suppliers I went to had the box set also reasonably priced. Oh well.

I've been watching bits of the next season online, and I must say... I don't mind the plot attempts. Sure, the crack is fun and probably some of my favorite stuff comes of it, but I do like to see our characters changing.

Gotta love Wolfram. He's growing up while keeping some of his bratty tendencies... if only he weren't doomed to unrequited love (as I see it, anyway).

:) Netflix has been REFUSING TO SEND ME the next KKM disk for MONTHS. IT'S DRIVING ME INSANE

Where are you in Season 2, or are you still in Season 1?

Re: Thread Necromancy!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2009-03-17 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm waiting on Disk 5 of Season 2.

Re: Thread Necromancy!

[identity profile] emtigereyes.livejournal.com 2009-03-18 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
While I will try to go slowly, given finances right now, I'm starting to collect Season 2. If, by chance, you have yet to get your disks by the time I own them, I wouldn't mind lending them to you. I watch them pretty quickly once I own them. :)

I'm a little sad that Season 3 is currently the end of the series. Not sure how effective online petitions will be, but I kind of doubt a 4th season will come of it. There's some OVAs floating around I hear, though I don't think they've made it to DVD yet.

Re: Thread Necromancy!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2009-03-18 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Cool, thanks! No telling *what* Netflix is doing with them. I've had them at the top of my queue long enough that I ought to be near the top of the line for them when one comes available.
