Art and AAGH

Was watching the most recent episode of Shear Genius as I was art-ing. On this one they were assigned an era, and had to do a hairstyle of that era. They fell all over the person who was assigned ELizabethan, saying he nailed it , but AAAAAAGHHH NO HE DIDN'T HE WAS TWO HUNDRED YEARS OUT OF PERIOD! My God, he had powder in the hair! He hit Georgian hair, not Elizabethan! 1780, not 1580! AAAAAAGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

If you're watching the show and I spoiled it for you SO MUCH THE BETTER. Yes, I am THAT ANNOYED. All the judges, that stylist, and the ENTIRE PRODUCTION can just bite Mello's fabulous ass.

Anyway, this is what I was working on as a break from Spindrift - I finished the inks tonight and am going to do the remaining tones and cleanup and lettering this weekend ([livejournal.com profile] ms_congeniality, I know I'd talked with you about the lettering, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized I'd have to create a detailed guide as to where it was placed, and that would be so much work that I might as well do it myself. :D)

Anyway, attempting really fine linework, since I do BIG BLOBBY STUFF all the time.

I'll leave it up to you-all to guess who this guy is supposed to be. :) (hee - this'll check to see if I managed to nail him or not. XD)

Wait, there is a show about hair styling? Hee! Why did I not know of this? Also, now I want to watch to see if they do the forties curls thing.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-11 12:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. Bravo's running a reality show in the vein of Top Chef and Project Runway about hairstylists, on Wednesday nights. It's a little over halfway over now, but it being Bravo it's rerun constantly all. week. long.

I will say that you're probably going to be disappointed at the 40s one. :) And the person who was assigned 80s punk nailed it, but the judges didn't think it was pretty enough. I think the judges were expecting 80s New Wave, not punk.

[identity profile] mistressrenet.livejournal.com 2007-05-12 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was all, 'what is not punk about that. What.'

[identity profile] mistressrenet.livejournal.com 2007-05-12 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
It's pretty good but [livejournal.com profile] telophase is so very right. The 40's style sucked cock, sadly.

My first response was "I don't know who he is, but this guy smells awful."
(Internal straight-guy) "Why?"
(Internal wise-ass) "He has no nose!"

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-11 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm actuallyr ather cranky right now because I was up half the night with a stomach bug, so I'm jsut going to say that he's got a nose. You don't want to put too many lines into the nose because it becomes All About The Nose and not about the person as a whole.

You might as well complain he doesn't have an upper lip: there's no indication of one, so I don't know why *that* doesn't jump out at you.

[identity profile] badnoodles.livejournal.com 2007-05-11 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I know he has a nose- nostrils are obviously indicated.

It was just an off the cuff internal response to the art style rather than serious criticism. Though
I have to say, I have no idea why I thought you'd appreciate a modified Hitler joke (http://www.pion.ch/Fun/funniest.html). All I can say is, it was late and I hadn't eaten anything.

[identity profile] tammylee.livejournal.com 2007-05-11 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I really like how you've done his hair!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-11 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
THank you! Looking at it, I think there need to be a few random pieces being a bit fluffier, to make it more dynamic. But I'm pretty happy with it - hair is one of my foes, and I'm trying to concentrate on it. :)

[identity profile] the-z.livejournal.com 2007-05-11 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw that episode. I thought something was a bit 'off' in that hairstyle :/

I'm pissed they cut down the 80's hairstyle for being 'predictable' when, for the love of god, that was the quintessential 80's punk hairstyle! You didn't ask for Flock of Seagulls, people. You wanted punk and boy did she pull out the punk!

Bunch of fashion snobs >:P

...yeah, I just happened to stumble on to Shear Genius while I was in labor. I can do without the omg hairstylist drama, but I do love seeing the different hairstyles. It's one of the few reality shows right now to hold my attention.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-11 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
It's like whatever the last reality-competition show I watched: the judges asked for something specific in the rules, and then completely ignored it in the actual judging.

I did a quick search for 'elizabethan hair' and ran across the blog of one of the judges, and I'm loving all the comments (http://www.bravotv.com/blog/michaelcarl/2007/05/period_pieces.php) bashing them for having the hair wrong. XD

I also want to go give Dr. Boogie a remedial search-engine course. He had five minutes and couldn't find any medieval hairstyles?

[identity profile] the-z.livejournal.com 2007-05-11 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Dr. Boogie is far too fabulous to bother with search engines, honey. He's aiming for the red carpet *z-snap*

[identity profile] mistressrenet.livejournal.com 2007-05-12 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, awesome!

Dr. Boogie's a moron, but I kind of love him anyway.

[identity profile] maxineofarc.livejournal.com 2007-05-11 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
PREACH IT.

[identity profile] derjmeister.livejournal.com 2007-05-11 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I really like how you did his hair. You should try out for Shear Genius 2 and just DRAW the hair; your excuse can be that you draw rather than cut because it is too fabulous to exist in real life. I wonder how well that will work...

And yeah, wtf Tyson. That hairdo reminded me of Falco. My favorite thing about it all, though, was that Tabatha (who rocks like Amadeus) intentionally gave him the Elizabethan hairstyle because he's been having problems with his up-do's and she figured he'd whiff it and get sent home, because she dislikes him strongly. But HE seemed to think she did it because she thinks he is a strong competitor and that it was a chance for him to push himself and grow.

So of course that backfired.

If you notice, on that challenge, it didn't appear they were allowed to cut anything...only to style. So I think that some of them were a little more screwed than others.

I still miss the French guy from the first episode, Paul-Jean. He was hot. I want. I guess I'll have to let Dr. Boogie entertain me. Also, I thought Ben was going to wind up being Jeffrey part III, but he has been surprisingly cool and doesn't make me want to punch him. Also he's not so bad to look at. Neither is Rene, who is like some sort of snarky Danish Ken Doll.

HELP!

[identity profile] cyancat.livejournal.com 2007-05-12 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
I'm about ready to throw my computer on the ground....when I know it doesn't help at all.
I have been working on getting files up for the website subdomain that you have wonderfully let me have.
Now I realized later that I had to have the main page with a name of index.html
Well, I did upload the page that does have that name. I uploaded all pictures and other pages that are part of the main page... especially after having a fight with Flash buttons so much that I just deleted them and put in a navigation bar.
I'm working with Dreamweaver, since its the only program that I have ever used. Is there something that I am not doing right?
I load them up to the newdawn.magatsu.net folder after I access the WebFTP login. Am I wrong? Or is there something else going on?

Re: HELP!

[identity profile] cyancat.livejournal.com 2007-05-12 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Oops, my problem is, is that When I go to 'newdawn.magatsu.net' nothing comes up.
I am thoroughly confused at this moment and freaked out since I wanted to show my friend the site I had been working all night on.

Re: HELP!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-12 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
I'm checking into it: looks like something is going on at the server level. I'm opening a support ticket with Dreamhost and will let you know what they find out.

Re: HELP!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-12 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Their support request form had a space for an cc'ed email, so I put yours in there - with luck you'll receive their answer at the same time I will. :)

If all else fails, I'll delete the domain and re-create it.

Thanks so much.
I'm glad that I have someone like you to turn to in these times of need.
I can bet that if I had this site by myself and this happened.....I'd be going crazy.

Re: HELP!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-05-12 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
:D Have you gotten all the CCs? It's to the mail.com account. For some weird reason both you and I seem to be having the same problem of our routers/modems not updating the DNS. It started working for me after I rebooted my modem - if you haven't done that, try that and see if you can see the page afterwards.

Re: HELP!

[identity profile] cyancat.livejournal.com 2007-05-12 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, I checked my mail today and read through all the CCs.
ANd after unplugging my router and clearing my cache on the computer, It amazingly worked.

To think that it could have been that simple....Doh!
Thanks for your time! I really appreciate it!
