lunch musings

I just made my lunch for tomorrow - 2/3 of a can of blackeyed peas*, and the two smaller containers of the bento filled with carrot chips and cucumbers. I put it into CalorieKing tonight and it was a whopping 250 calories total. That keeps looking too small to me. XD But I'll be grabbing something as per usual about 2:30-3:00 from the Bistro downstairs, because it doesn't matter how much I eat at noon, I'm starving by the middle of the afternoon. Diving my meals up into several small ones over the course of the day works a lot better for me. Of course on the days that lunch is 250ish cal, like it was on Wednesday, it's damn hard to make up the rest in the evening. Ah well.

* Which must be using liquid weight instead of dry weight for their measurements - they say on the can that 1/2 c is a serving, and that there's "about" 3.5 servings in the can. Well, if you assume that "about" means "nowhere near," then yes: there were exactly 3 1/2 cup servings in there.

Mind you I just realized I drained out the water first, so they must be counting that into their servings.

No pictures? I didn't know you could eat just plain black-eyed peas like that.

... How else would you eat black-eyed peas? Canned ones are already cooked. You just nuke 'em and go. The ones that come in bags are dehydrated and you have to cook them.

And no pictures. So there!

I have only encountered them in chili and on nachos. XD

Blackeyed peas are also a must on New Year's Day for good luck. You cook them with onion and some salt pork - some cookbooks call it hopping john. You can also mix blackeyed peas right out the can with onion, garlic, bell pepper, oil & vinegar, maybe some chiles, celery, cilantro or Roma tomatoes if you like, and make Texas Caviar! (I've even heard of people adding carrots, black olives, jalapenos, etc.)

Where they're serving as, y'know, condiments. :)

Stop making me hungry! I won't be able to eat for another hour!

I have never heard of that. I know you are supposed to have sauerkraut on new years for good luck. Hopping john doesn't sound bad at all.

[identity profile] rayechu.livejournal.com 2007-03-29 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes but not vinegarified, soupy condiments.

I think it's a regional thing - Texas/the South. I'd never heard of sauerkraut on New Years Day for good luck, and you'd think I would have being more German than anything else! I like sauerkraut but my significant other does not - this would give me an excuse to eat it.

It must be because I have never heard of it. Apparently you are also supposed to put change under the doormat if you want to have a good year with money.

Black-eyed peas must be eaten with cornbread. It's a moral imperative thing. I like to buy black-eyed peas with bacon and jalapeƱo in them for a little more flavor and kick. :)

Woe is me for I have no cornbread, but I shall, somehow, survive.

But will you survive *happily* is the question!
