WHAT??

WENT TO THE KODO DRUMMERS TONIGHT.

THEY WERE VERY VERY LOUD.

Also, I'm at ConDFW.  The art show got up, my feet are in incredible pain, and I'm about to crash.  But I thought I'd post and say I WENT TO THE KODO DRUMMERS AND YOU DIDN'T.

They're a taiko group that does mostly contemporary drumming works.  If you google them, you'll find trhe webpage that talks about their workshop.  They do all sorts of drums and the occasional thing like flute or koto or samisen.  You have to be in incredible shape to do a show with these drums: especially the two guys who drum for about fifteen minutes <s>dressed only in loincloths</s> on the big 4-foot-diameter drum, then jump off the platform and go drum for another 10 minutes on smaller drums that sit on the floor, and the player sites with a foot on either side of them and then <i>leans back at a 45 degree angle to play.</I>  Abs of the gods, indeed.

The last time I saw them, duinring 2002 or 2003, they came out into the lobby after the show and played a bit there, but they didn't do it this time.

OK, time to get offline and crash.  The art show opens at 11, but I need to be there at 11 for a few stragglers to hang their art.  Whee.

Arg, damn the RTF posting style thingy. I'm on the boy's computer and he's just generally paranoid and doesn't let his computer accept cookies, so I can'te ver staty logged in on LJ enough to fix things. Oh well.

I envy you your fundoshi viewing experience.

And the drums, too.

Randomly, I must tell you that I was at a used bookstore in Santa Barbara, CA and they had copies of Project Blue Rose!

Is there any particular reason why that'd be, or was it just random chance? *curious*

I also saw the Kodo Drummers! ^^ They went to the A&M campus a couple of weeks back, and yeah, the loincloth boys very much impressed me with their incredible endurance.

Last night I played my full piece on the big (maybe 3ft diameter) taiko drum, placed sideways, which was your typical legs waaay apart stance now with added waving your arms back and forth above your head. I was tired after one go through, and after the second my legs were shaking so much I had to sit down for a bit. And that's like, the easiest unconventional drumming position. That one from a crunch position would kill me dead before I hit 45 degrees, and I'm willing to bet I wouldn't last 45 seconds - but then, I am not a well-muscled, smooth-backed professional who has probably been doing this from a very young age (though I would genuinely love to be).

As far as just the standard upright drumming goes I get tired after around an hour of rehearsal, and twenty minutes of continuous drumming guarantees I won't be able to grip hard enough or raise the sticks high enough to actually hit properly anymore, not to mention the fact that my ankle will probably be a bit wobbly and my inner thighs distinctly uncomfortable. Sigh. My unfitness makes me sad.

And that is more than you wanted all you get for your unwanted amateur taiko view for the day! Except for saying that it's tremendous fun, visually and aurally very cool, and I would recommnd it as an experience to anyone who doesn't completely lack a sense of rhythm.

Yay, taiko! I saw a performance about a month ago, although sadly there were no loincloths involved.

*coughs* No, it involved more clothing, not less. ^^

AGH! Taiko drumming here that I didnt' know about!

Okay, admittedly, I'm not UP to going right now, I'm so wiped by this pregnancy, and yeah, that is a bit pricey.

BUT NEXT TIME YOU TELL ME ABOUT IT FIRST, okay? Please?
