Ow!

It's a friend's birthday, so she and her husband treated a bunch of us to bowling and pizza. We eventually got the pizza - we'd been there an hour and they hadn't brought it out, so my friend went and complained. Then an hour later, they hadn't brought it out, so my friend went to complain that the group next to us, which had gotten there some time after us, had already gotten their pizza and finished it. At which point she discovered that they'd brought the pizza out ... to the wrong group. Yup, to the people next to us. We eventually got pizza, and the manager brought it out to us.

I bowled two games and sat out the third and fourth because you know? Bowling? With a bad back? So not a good idea. Owwwwwwwwww.

On the bright side, I hadn't bowled in, like, fifteen years and I didn't completely suck, I just mostly sucked. I managed to hit pins at least once during the frame for most frames, and twice I got strikes, and once I picked up a spare. :) My lovely score? 58 the first time and 64 the second. :D

ack! that is so uncool. >_<;

i've been bowling twice in my life... i don't remember how i did the time i went as a kid, and i also forgot to take note of my score the second time. oh well. ^^;

I took bowling as a class in highschool, mostly because we got to go off campus three times a week. :) I hadn't bowled since then, and was pleasantly surprised at how much I remembered. I don't have as much control of my ball as I managed to have then - I think I was consistently bowling 80-100 with few gutter balls at the time - but I remembered the proper form, even though I couldn't go completely into proper form because of my back, and I remembered how to hold the ball and which little arrows on the lane I was supposed to aim at. :)

I'd be willing to go again, but not until my back stops hurting.

hehe, and then there's me and my kind of non-random game. XD; i noticed that since i'm right-handed, whenever i bowled, the ball would tend to go towards the left a bit, so i'd always aim a little to the right. *shrug*

but yeah, i'd also definitely wait until the back stops hurting. back pain sucks. >.>

Whenever I notice that the ball is going one way, I overcorrect the other way. I alternate the sides I'm throwing gutter balls on. XD

hehe, my throws for the night were all gutter balls to the left, so that's how i figured out i was throwing it to the left. XD;

Blah bowling. I worked at a bowling alley for five years. Two games is about the max I can do before I get bored. The balls don't give me back problems but I always get my fat fingers stuck in the ball. And manage to throw the ball backwards at least once per game.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-02-18 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
Hee. XD I have to use the 8-pound wimpy!ball because any more than that and I can't keep my arm moving in a straight line. I didn't throw the ball backwards, and not once did I fail to release the ball until too late - I was worried about that. I did slip and almost fall once, and I remember falling down a lot when I was learning and was worried about doing it again, but I managed to keep my balance this time. :)

[identity profile] rayechu.livejournal.com 2007-02-18 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
I use 8-9 pound balls. Usually the most obnoxious color I can find so no one else uses my ball. I have tried bowing the "correct" way. (Release on the second dot from the right and put a slight curve to the ball.) But bowling just isn't my sport. The best part about bowling is the alley food. There is nowhere that I know of that makes a better chocolate shake and order of mozzarella sticks then the bowling alley.

It doesn't look cool, and might actually be more difficult to be accurate, but did you consider trying a two-handed underhand pitch/roll approach?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-02-18 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
a) That's the wrong way to bloody bowl, and

b) that's far worse to my back than bowling with one hand. Think about what you're doing with your back when doing that. You're rounding it. And carrying a weight at the same time, not lifting that weight from the knees, and moving your arms with that weight. The correct way to bowl, you keep your back straight and only twist it a very slight bit - the majority of the momvement comes in stratching one side as you raise and lower your bowling hand. My problem is that I have a weak ligament in my lower back that does not like twisting, especially with a weight. Someone with a healthy back would not have that problem when bowling correctly, but someone with a healthy back who attempts a two-handed thing runs a pretty good risk of no longer having a healthy back after too much of that.

There's a good reason it's the proper way to bowl.

Somehow I thought you could keep your back straight when using two hands, but after thinking about it, yeah, that's a *great* way to fuck up one's back. Never mind.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-02-18 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
Here are two pictures. This first one is the correct way to bowl. See how her back is straight?

Here's the two-handed method. See how his back is round? Mine hurts just looking at that and I can't actually physically do that without pain. It's a bad idea to lift anything that way.

Towards the end of the night, I was really afraid I was going to smack one of those kids running around upside the head with the ball.

I just kept imagining one of those boys catching the ball with his face on the upswing, while I followed through and pitched him down the lane, and as his limp body careened into the pins and the backboard, his father would be on the sidelines throwing up his arms and shouting, "Yaaaaaay!!!!"

I don't want to think about what would have followed on the ball return.

>.> <.< >.> ... what?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-02-18 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I know! I can't believe that the parents were letting the kids go wild and run around in front of other people's lanes. Well, actually I can believe it; I just don't want to. To the dad's credit, once I saw him stand up and start to advance to remove the kid from in front of you when you were about to bowl, but the kid's random Brownian motion moved him away and the dad sat back down again.

Here's a picture for you. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v280/telophase14/49297HMol_w.jpg) (Origin: unknown, probably a Fark or Something Awful Photoshop contest.)

Wow,
I am surprised that bowling wasn't that much fun for you.
I love bowling, but I have been doing it since my parents sent me and my brother to Sat bowling for kids every weekend as children.
I even have my own ball, but mine is about 16 lbs or so.
I bowl with my mom on her league now and get an average of 115 or so. I should be doing better, but I'm not since I stopped bowling when I got into highschool.
My mom and Dad, they're good at it. My Dad once shot a perfect 300 in one game in 2004 and my mom has almost got a 300, she had a 277.
They bowl at least twice a week, if not more.
Practice makes the bowler!

It's not that it's not fun, it's that my back was in serious pain after two games. :)
