Speaking of anime...

ADV Films is haing a massive sale right now. (Too bad there's nothing I want to buy.) A few manga, soundtracks, and merchandise near the very bottom. Also includes some SF TV shows like Farscape and Andromeda.

Also: I have a seriously geeky desire to eat food that I've heard of in anime and manga that I really can't get here in North Texas when I get to Japan. I'm not talking stuff like miso or ramen or Pocky or sushi, all of which is easily obtainable here, but things like okonomiyaki (Ranma 1/2) and takoyaki (just about everything). So: your mission is to list Japanese food from anime and manga. Bonus points for listing the anime/manga it's from. :) P.S. No natto. The taste probably wouldn't bother me, but I have a serious aversion to things of that texture. :)

Chikuwa, tokoroten, hanpen, konnyaku, and oden in general (a la Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo). I'm sure there's plenty other foods mentioned, but they're not coming to mind offhand.

PS: Try to find some home-made nattou instead of the stuff from the store. My first experience with it was not slimy and stringy at all, but the store stuff.. eeergh.

Dango (Naruto, Champloo, tons of stuff). I didn't care for it, but if you like mochi you will.

[identity profile] thomasyan.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't forget: Champloo, from Azumanga Daioh. (I don't think it is actually eaten in Samurai Champloo.)

I want to try those crepe things, from Fruits Basket and others. I probably can't, of course, as they likely have milk in them, but I hold out hope that they are mostly made with rice or something. Chocolate and banana and strawberry.

I want Princess Tutu DVDs! But I also want a boxset. Am I foolish to keep waiting? (They're totally going to go out of print and it will be Beauty & the Beast all over again.)

Anime food:
- the seriously convoluted long noodles that you eat from an elaborate slide (Momiji wants to build one in Fruits Basket)
- octopus balls (Hana-Kimi, Furuba, random shojo)
- dango
- daifuku, mmmm, especially anko mochi (Blade of the Immortal has sakuramochi!)

not from a particular anime/manga but SO GOOD together oh man now I'm hungry: red bean ice cream & green tea ice cream, mmmmmmmmmmmmm

There is no more out of print. We have the internets.

I just like to say, 'Okonomiyaki'! I really want to try one of those grilled squid on a stick like from Hana Yori Dango!

[identity profile] thomasyan.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I found them to be ok: not enough squid in them for my taste.

oh!! and thank you for posting about the sale! XD
There's a couple of Christmas gifts out of the way.

Damiiiiiiit. *whines at ADV* I want those Get Backers DVDs so bad! Rar.

I have an easy recipe for okonomiyaki if you want it. It's not hard to make and other than dashi soup stock it doesn't have any esoteric ingredients. Yum yum!

[identity profile] badnoodles.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Okonomiyaki is not that hard to make, but I've never found it to be particularly tasty.

[identity profile] nockergeek.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
That is quite the sale at ADV. I do not need this kind of temptation!

[identity profile] magicnoire.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a nice sale... There are a couple old series I'd like to get!

...still no Princess Tutu boxset though. D:

Food for big eyes

[identity profile] amberley.livejournal.com 2007-02-12 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
What an excellent idea!

Okonomiyaki
Takoyaki
Yakisoba
Oden - xxxHolic (also a good source for various drinks)
Ramune - in the bottles with the little glass ball inside - RahXephon
Yakiniku - Azumanga Daioh
Shabu Shabu - or was that one of the priestesses from El Hazard?
Nabu Hot Pot - Shingu: Secret of the Interstellar Wars
or Sukiyaki - Nana
Onigiri with Ume - Fruits Basket
Grilled Squid on a stick - Samurai Champloo
Talking Pork Bun - Magic Knight Rayearth, oh no, wait
The entire city of Tokyo yum! - Godzilla

And perhaps things from Iron Wok Jan and Yakitate.
Recall that Yokohama has the largest Chinatown outside China.

Don't forget the ritual phrase "If it's summer, it's got to be <food name>!"

I don't know if Yokohama has a beach for blindfolded smashing of watermelons, but there is an amusement park near the con site.

Looks like I'll have a big list of things. XD It's like a birding life list.

It should help us decide between places to eat, though. If there's more than one possibility, but this one serves something on the list and that one doesn't, we have an obvious choice. :D

I thought this might be of interest to you, and it's local:

Oh, hey, thanks! I'll see if I can make it. :)

thanks for the heads up on the sale

[identity profile] cerusee.livejournal.com 2007-02-13 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
The entire first season of Kaleido Star for $25? Holy crap. Thanks for the heads up!

You know those fish-shaped pastries filled with red bean paste? I desperately want to try those. They're everywhere, although I saw them most recently in Kanon. Taiyuki, I think they're called.

I also reaaaaaally want to go for Korean barbecue. I blame that on Azumanga Daioh.

mmmmm... okonomiyaki (ccs), sukiyaki (saiyuki... was it reload? forget), ohagi (death note), takoyaki (you already got that one anyway... it's in so many anime/manga), also yakiniku. can't remember if i saw that last one in any anime or manga, but i thought i'd add it anyway. ^^;

Natto = Acquired taste for sure.

*bleargh*

http://robkelk.ottawa-anime.org/hoffmann-faqs/food.html

I randomly found this list tonight and thought of you. Pretty much all of these on this list have been mentioned already, but it seems fairly informative because there's extra info on the foods. And a couple recipes. I dunno if it's helpful or not, but hopefully it will be at least interesting.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2007-02-15 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Cool, thanks. :D
