Done in somewhere between 1.5-2 hours, based off of (but not traced from, otherwise the proportions would be correct :D) a photo I got off of http://www.sxc.hu.

Mostly Painter IX, and then the head was way too big, so I imported it into Photoshop to shrink the head, then discovered to my horror that the Digital Watercolor layer wouldn't let me blend anymore *wah* so I couldn't finish it in Painter. So I had to use the airbrush in Photoshop to disguise the areas where the head had been shrunk, which wasn't as good as the digital watercolor. Oh well.

I like it, though I think there is something slightly off about the cigarette. I wish I could put the little highlight of color in like you do.

I thought they really only had that orange glow when you were dragging on them? Sorry, I don't smoke or know anyone who is alive and does.

Nah, it's not that big of a deal. I just happened to notice. I still wish I could do shadows and highlights like you do though. Did you pick that up from a tutorial or from your real life painting classes?

The answer to that would be: Yes. :D I sort of picked it up here and there. I'm really happy with that one big highlight on his chest, in the middle of the dark shadow. Not so happy with the sleeve and the light part of the shirt - they ended up overworked. A lot of the shadow and highlight on this one came from looking at the reference photo (http://www.sxc.hu/photo/541948) and trying to copy those, and some of it (like teh chin) came from this stock shadow shape I have in my head. I threw the colors in after it seemed his hand was getting too flat and needed something. I didn't do it perfectly ehre, but normally, you'll get an increase in saturation for the color right before the shadow - that's a little tip that gives amazing life to images. :)

Thanks. :D I saw the photo (http://www.sxc.hu/photo/541948) and knew I wanted to paint it. :) I was actually looking for pictures of people lighting cigarettes to do a Sanzo, but the only ones I found that I liked weren't copyright-free, and I have NO IDEA why I'm so weirded out about doing fanart with a copyrighted photo as a base.

Hi. I'm the friend with the birthday, and I just got my print last night. Very nice picture. I love the less cartoon/more lifelike quality of this drawing, as well as the pose and expression. Excellent adaptation of the base photo into a Gojyo portrait. Great job on the hand as well as the shirt and the highlights and shadows. You said in one of your comments above that you thought the shirt and sleeve got overworked--the sleeve perhaps a little; but I think the body of the shirt is perfect. I'm a fabric lover, and I think you captured the texture and drape of the shirt very nicely.

Good speed-painting, I like all the highlights and shadows (I need to practice that some more, my colouring skills are a bit "meh"). His eyes really creep me out for some reason I can't rationally explain.

That site's good, although the photographers can put any restrictions on the pics they like, so you have to check for it. The best site is MorgueFile (http://www.morguefile.com), which is nothing but completely, absolutely, free photos. :D
