...I now have TiVo. And after only having to go through the setup twice because it decided all of a sudden after communicating with the network JUST FINE for 20 minutes that no, it didn't like the network adapter plugged into that USB port, and I should switch it to the other one. But it's going, at least.
My lousy TV is, naturally, not one of the brands listed in the remote configuration screen, so we'll see if I'll be able to set it up or not. I am not optimistic.
And on that note, I'm going to bed. I emailed that I was going to be in late and work late instead. They're Systems people. They'll understand the mad desire not to let this network setup and uppity piece of machinery best you.

Welcome to the joys of fast forward, pause, and season passes.

And time to set up season passes just as the shows I watch go on hiatus! Yaaay! Heh.

I'm not usually one to throw around unsolicited advice, except when I am. Under the list of "things I wish someone had told me sooner" with regards to my TiVo:
1) Within the settings is a default recording quality. Starbucks inspired options like, "good, better, best, really stupendous" and such, but this setting has a big impact on how fast your TiVo fills up (better quality = more drive space needed). So, play with it, see what you like.
2) If you leave the "Suggestions" feature turned on, train it. Like a little Pokemon, or something...no, wait, a rolled up newspaper and a squirt bottle don't work. But the thumbs up and down buttons do. Use them liberally in the beginning, and soon your TiVo will know your whims. Just remember, you're not who your TiVo thinks you are.
3) When setting a season pass, check the options. You can also fiddle with recording quality per pass, and you can opt for reruns or first-run only. Be aware that TiVo follows your program on the channel you set it. So, even though Heroes shows on NBC, Sci-Fi, USA, Bravo, and every network NBC owns, if you set the pass on NBC then that is the channel TiVo monitors.
I hope you forgive my pedagogical (pedantic?) displays...hope I'm not being an annoying twit.no subject

3) It's also important to rank your Season Passes. There's a screen in there where you can move them up and down and thus assign importance. In case of a conflict, it'll record the higher-ranked program.
4) Also, Keyword and Actor Season Passes rock a ton. I like Survivor, but it's a new name every season so instead of setting up each year as another pass, I set up to record new shows starring Jeff Probst, which means I also get the talk shows he's on from time to time but that's worth not missing the new season of Survivor. Similarly, I have a keyword pass set up to record new shows containing the phrase "I love the" off of VH1, so I can pick up any new things they do with the decade-in-review programs they do that are so much fun. But that one I rank very low on the listings, as I don't want it to accidently interfere with something I know for sure I want to see.
5) Just a warning: sometimes new shows aren't really new. For example, my TiVo kept recording four identical "new" Daily Shows every day, until I killed that Season Pass and just forced a recurring time/channel recording on it. Also, my "new programs starring William Shatner" recently started popping up "new" reruns of original Trek. That's fine, but do be careful; last week one of those overrode House, so I had to push it down the rankings to the bottom so as not to lose any more Hugh Laurie goodness.

Re: 5) I noticed that with the Top Chef Season Pass - Bravo plays it overandoverandoverandover during the week, and marks it new each time, it seems. I've pushed it below Heroes and House.
