Writers on my friendslist

I wasn't going to bother to post this, since it's been on a number of the manga blogs already, and then I realized that I could think of at least three writers I know who don't read the manga blogs. :D

So ... Iris Print, a new publisher of original boyslove, yaoi, m/m, whatever you want to call it today, have a call for story submissions for an original prose anthology with a fairy tale theme. Deadline January 15th. I know at least one person who's worked with them and vouches for them

Now, if they could just get away from the damn Poser cover that they used for their first anthology, it would look much better.

No kidding. That cover makes me cringe every time I pick up the book. So bad.

What is it about small press, and ebook publishers that make them think Poser covers are good? Frankly, I don't pick up any book that makes me embarassed to be seen buying it, and I buy manga with some really dodgy covers.

Whatever happened to classy graphic design without pictures, or with an iconic shot of an object or two? It would certinaly get them access to a larger possible audience, the one who cringes at bad art on covers.

You want me to ask her? We actually had this conversation, when she placed a rendering in the calender alongside all the other monthly arts, and since Iris has 3 books out now, and only 1 with the poser cover, I hardly think it's habitual. ^_-.

Yeah, I'd actually like to know why publishers use them, and getting insight into one might help. :)

It might be that I've just got higher art standards than a lot of readers, but I can't stand Poser stuff that hasn't been worke over and over to make it lest plasticky and static.

Or maybe I've spent too much time reading Smart Bitches Trashy Books and their ridicule of awful Poser covers. :D

LOL! I can't stand poser art. Rendered men do nothng for me. I recall saying to her...do you need that sort of art in the calender? I think I might have put her on the defensive a bit [but that's never permanent with her, she's extremely cool]. Her answer was...there are people who like it. I guess I'm in the minority.

Speaking of publishers, did you guys score a foreign publisher for yours yet? I'm fishing around for others experiences before mine goes up on the lease block.

I am yet to be convinced that the number of people who like it are larger than the number of people who are turned away by it, but then I'm not a publisher with more than one book. :D

Haven't heard anything back from Rachel's agent yet on PBR or any of the projects he's shopping around, and we're waiting until I actually get Spindrift somewhat drawn before starting to shop it. :D

but then I'm not a publisher with more than one book. Wasn't implying you had to be to appreciate the WTFery of why publishers choose to do it. ^^ I know for A Strong and Sudden Thaw, there's no poser-cover, and for When Worlds Collide, same thing. As for Iris Print's next 3 GN releases--again, no poser art, so not sure if she might be able to answer your question fully, but I will glady ask her to try. I'm as curious as you are ^_-. So my implication was, it's not a habit of their as a publisher.

It seems native to the 'slash' and original m/m fiction markets though. Gay erotica tends to use 'photos' on all their anthys, so perhaps places like Xtacy and others are just trying to 'keep it real' but at the same time, keep it 'illustrated'? Don't know if I follow that logic, but meh...

I don't think it's a matter of "good" so much as "fast and cheap". Especially for the e-rotica publishers, who don't have to worry about getting clothing to conform to the figures properly.

Hmmm. Wonder if I can resurrect that half-finished Prince Charming/Wolf retelling of Cinderella set in faerie-tale Victorian London from the depths of my hard drive...?

I just found this a couple days ago and have been meaning to pimp it out to other people, so thanks for taking care of that for me! XD I think I'll whip up a submission once I recover from NaNoWriMo.
