A challenge...

...for you who can read Japanese or who can fake it well enough to navigate Japanese fanart/doujinshi sites, and are in the mood fo digging for info on obscure circles.

I'm again attempting to find any information about an artist or circle known as Aileen. The only reasonable web reference I can find is, naturally, in Thai. Well, I think ti's Thai. It may be one of the other South Asian scripts that I'm unfamiliar with.
Leastways, I think that's Thai. It's from this page. There's sample pages from 8-Pochi, Aileen, and D-Brand in that list, and I'm trying to work out if they're connected in any way, or if that's just a list of doujins that someone bought at once. Seems to be an anthology, but I can't tell if the contributors are connected to each other in any way. I can't tell by the art, because the samples show art that's above average in all of them. I can't even tell if Aileen etc. are actually Thai, although I know the one doujinshi I own by Aileen is in Japanese.

From another Thai site, this one on Livejournal, I find what I think is a link to 8-Pochi and what looks like their booth number at a 2005 Comiket or Comiket-type convention. If someone could poke about this site and see if it gives any information as to who's in 8-Pochi (or information that they're still active), I'd be happy. There's an image in the page you reach by the "off" link, this page that looks vaguely like Aileen's work - the B&W picture at the top of the page featureing Mello's fabulous ass, although the subject matter isn't quite Aileen - but I can't read anything about it, obviously. The picutre link at the bottom, with Mello and Mat in a car, goes to sample pages of a doujinshi by 8-Pochi whose work ... has some elements of what I see in the doujinshi by Aileen, but isn't really good enough to be her/them, although the cover looks like her/them. So, y'know, I'm probably completely chasing phantoms here. :) Especially since there seems to be a link credit on the cover which goes to a fanart site that is definitely not Aileen, and is somewhat NSFW in places as I discovered when clicking and was confronted with a blurred picture that was still obviously Mello and a string of sausages, I think, so be careful if you click at work or school.)

...

Okay, by poking around and looking at the URL on Aileen's scan on the first Thai page, I think that they were part of an anthology called Spicy Nova, which may or may not be credited to a circle called 8PLUS: Spicy Nova (8PLUS Anthology). Or at elast the cover on the anthology says "Presented by 8PLUS Steering Committee."

So ...if anyone can find any information on Aileen, 8PLUS, Spicy Nova, 8-Pochi, D-Brand, Sabi, etc., I'd be ever-so grateful. :D

And now I'm going to a meeting.

Can't read Japanese or Thai, but I second the opinion that the writing is Thai.

OK. FWIW 8Pochi is very active- the 'off' link page says they'll have a release at next Comicate and will appear at a comic sale in Osaka in January. The dj with the guys in the car is a co-production with another djka, which would explain the differing cover art.

However the 55Electric site is run by someone called Nakacoco and makes no reference I can see to anyone called Aileen except the note: 'occasionally I draw under another name.' If Aileen is an established djka then she's probably someone other than nakacoco; if she shows up only occasionally they might be the same person. And to make matters harder to judge, Nakacoco's taken down her galleries on the site.

Obviously what's needed here is someone who reads Thai.

Hmmm. *attempts to track down art by Nakacoco to compare to Aileen's* Does this page seem to have anything to do with the above-referenced Nakacoco, or is it a totally different reference?

Or does this oekaki board (http://bbs3.oebit.jp/nakacoco/) seem to have anything to do with her?

Gaaaaah, the problems with tracking down flaky people online in other languages! I suppose it's a symbol of living in the future, huh? I'm actually quite surprised I managed to get this far. I only know of three doujinshi that Aileen's produced besides the anthology - one is the Vacation one I mention in my next post, and I have a Volume 2 by her whose title I've forgotten, which presumes a Volume 1.

Of all the various languages that people on my LJ read, I think that Thai is probably not one of them. Unfortunately. [livejournal.com profile] puppleball is learning a bit, last I heard, but she's just a beginner. :)

BTW, thank you very much. :)

The first o-nakacoco seems to be someone else. I think they mean cocoa, while the other coco seems to have something to do with ducks. Also this hot chocolate coco person has links to blogs about Heike Monogatari and Lafcadio Hearne while the DN nakacoco has lists of actors? singers? who are her heart's desire etc. Bit of a difference in tone.

The oekaki person seems to be the same.

When you say anthology, do you mean a professional publication or a dj with a bunch of different artists? If the latter, it's actually very common to invite a bunch of friends to contribute to your dj, which means these guys all know each other from fandom but probably aren't the same person. If the former, the selection is perfectly random. The publishers just get the biggest named fans they can and ask to use one of their dj stories.

Dunno which it is - the first part of that page has pictures that look like ads for an event concerning it. I can recognize the "8PLUS" on the ads, and the date which is in May of this year, so the artists are at least fairly recently active. Then there's photos which I'm assuming are photos of the event, and a photo of something that says "DEATHNOTE ONLY EVENT 8PLUS" which looks like a program or something. And then we get to the cover of the Spicy Nova anthology itself (http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d145/lapace/8PLUS/02a_spicynova_s.jpg), which is IDed in the text as "Spicy Nova (8PLUS Anthology)", and some interior photos from it including the Aileen one (its URL has the words "spicy nova" in it, and the rest of the pics on the page seem to be named according to the title of the dj they're in), and then what looks like dj the blogger picked up at the event.

I'm actually surprised at how much information I've been able to pull out of that page without being able to read any of the text. :D

Yet another PS

Looking at the Thai webpage it seems to me that those are just scans from different doujinshi by different circles that she bought at the sale, so sadly it would seem there's no connection between them.

I think that several of them were in an anthology, though, including a story by Aileen, so I was wondering if there were a connection between the circles in the anthology.

Good lord. Huh. At any rate, I'll head to email. :)

[identity profile] gorogoro.livejournal.com 2006-11-15 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Interesting note: on all the doujinshi listings I found, she seemed to be working in conjuction with 砧菜々, who is/are in a greater number of anthologies. Are you sure she's the artist and not just a writer? Perhaps a scan/photo of the credits page from the doujinshi would help.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-11-15 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
She's definitely an artist - on the dj I own it says that someone else wrote it (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v280/telophase14/42.jpg). Which isn't to say she doesn't write for others, of course. (Can you read the text at the bottom of this page ()?)

[identity profile] gorogoro.livejournal.com 2006-11-15 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Aha, well that explains that part -- 砧菜々 = Kinuta Nana. Sadly the text is just a little too small to read much more than the hiragana. Apologizing for something, and then some sort of fangirlish excitement is about all I can get from it.

On the other hand... you could just try emailing her for more info? It's always worth a shot~.
