Cruise - Tulum

And now the final group of shots from the cruise. The ship docked at Cozumel, and some of us went on the excursion to Tulum, some small Mayan ruins along the coastline about an hour or so away. It was a rainy day, but the storm held off for most of the time.

The photoset itself, with 23 photos, is here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/telophase/sets/72157594372375909/

A few pics are under here:

This is the ship docked next to us. My lens was having problems with fogging over in the humidity, but Photoshop managed tot ake care of most of that.

The photographers and people dressed as Maya that lurked outside the entrance to the ship - these are lurking outside the ship next to us. They leapt upon you and posed and took a picture of you if you weren't quick enough to avoid them. For those of you who haven't been on a cruise, they take many, many photos and then try to sell them to you under the guise of memories of your fun time, although your memories mostly end up being of dodging the photographers.

It was very, very soggy at Tulum. Our feet were soaked. My lens was still fogging up a little when I took this pic, but after that its temperature equalized with the outside and it stopped.

The site is on a small cliff overlookign the shore. I was tired and headachy and bitchy, and sat down on a rock and took photos while Toby poked around the clifftop. BUt I got the best photos of the trip here, I think.

I've got a ton of photos of Tulum, but a lot of them are either "Gosh, more jungle" or "Gosh, more rocks," so I haven't bothered to upload them. :)

Hey, I went to Tulum on a cruise two summers ago! It was fun. I had a good time particularly because I'd just finished a course on the Maya a few weeks previous, so while our tour guide was giving speeches about the stars and equinoxes, I was wandering around in the back going, "Now let me tell you about what they used obsidian razor blades for...".

:D We broke away from the group, since I'd taken classes on Mesoamerican archaeology before and Toby didn't much care. I'm glad we did, since we really only had about half the time allotted to wander around the ruins before the storm broke, and we wouldn't have gotten to get away from the group for long if we'd done that.

Yeah, probably for the best. Our guide, at least, was really boring.

The one thing you both might have missed is that the ridge out along the coastline-- you can see it in the pictures-- is a natural reef that formed a second line of protection for them all.

The guide told us about it in the bus on the way there, actually - he was exceptionally proud that it was bigger than the Great Barrier Reef, I think. XD

You outta turkey already?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-11-13 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. Ate the last this morning in a sandwich, and have been craving more ever since. :) But I shall be good and wait for a few days before cracking and either getting one at Subway or buying more sliced turkey myself.

Ahh, Tulum....

....I remember you most for the NEST OF FIRE ANTS I STEPPED IN. Ow.

Beautiful pictures. Thank you for sharing.

I think the fire ants had had to build little tiny rafts and sail to safety by the time we got there. It was very soggy.
