Another poll!

[livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija insists that I put a poll up to decide what books I'm taking on the cruise with me. I mean, I'm going to ignore whatever you guys say anyway, but why the hell not?

I've got two stacks of unread or only-a-little-bit-into books waiting for me to start packing next weekend. They've been loaned to me by friends and my mother, or been recommended to me by various people, or I just picked them up on my own. They're divided into two questions just because LJ won't let you have more than fifteen options for one question.

[Poll #846436]

I started the Mary Gentle a while back and ended up returning it to the library half-finished. It's nowhere near as grim as Slammerkin, but I still wanted to slap most of the people, particularly the hero, who keeps thinking about how he wants to sleep with the adolescent heroine and why her humiliating him gets him all het up. Also, the Japanese character in there annoyed me, as all his dialogue was written to emphasize his mispronunciation of things (or so I remember).

I got it back when it was published, and read far enough to discover the heroine :) and hav ethe Japanese guy introduced, but didn't get any farhter for some reason or other. I hadn't stopped reading through annoyance, though, and kept intending to pick it up and finish it someday.

I've heard from a number of people who, for one reason or another, couldn't get through that, which has put me off from starting it. I do love her Ash books, but she's a very hit-or-miss writer.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-10-17 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
I bounced hard off Ash, but I have fond memories of the Rats and Gargoyles books.

What was the deal with Greg Ayres? I knew there was some kerfuffle with [livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija but missed the loop entirely.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-10-17 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Her con report (http://rachelmanija.livejournal.com/368193.html) will reveal all!

[identity profile] m00nface.livejournal.com 2006-10-17 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Revealed! And I'm surprised, he didn't seem the spark-spitting type when I met him this summer (though the image is amusing, especially with his hair, shortness and general air of camp...).

Wish I could offer input on, like, the actual POINT of your poll, but I am sadly unlitrate.

Stay away from Affinity! STAY AWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY.

Actually, never mind, it is very well written and you will probably be one of the people who likes it.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-10-17 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
I am not convinced that I am. :) Lots of things that people recommend to me as well-written, I bounce of off hard. [livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija said it was her favorite of Waters' books, so I got it, but we'll see if I like it or not.

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2006-10-17 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, people do seem to either love it or hate it, whereas Waters' other books seem to get less of a polarized reaction. I like her other books too.

It has very skillfully used language, but I do not forgive it for existing!

[identity profile] rushthatspeaks.livejournal.com 2006-10-17 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
That is the best summary I have ever heard of my feelings about that book. Thank you.

Of all of those, the ones that seem like the best, juicy, sink-into-them-on-a-cruise books, are What's Bred in the Bone and Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-10-17 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
And I'm inclined to think that Neil Gaiman and Hellboy are the juciest sink-into-them-on-a-cruise books. XD

And, since I get it two hours before you do, a tease: OH GOD HIRO!!!

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2006-10-17 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Nothing bad better happen to my Hiro!!!!

Muahahahahahahahahaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2006-10-17 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
OMGWTFBBQ! That was so insane! And wonderful!

[identity profile] rachel-renee.livejournal.com 2006-10-17 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
Since I haven't heard of any of those books offhand, I chose titles that sounded interesting.

And on an unrelated topic, my husband just informed me that when you came through Houston the other day and we had lunch, the friend that you were in town to visit had roll-played with us. (I didn't play as much as watch, because I was pregnant and emotional at the time, but still...) I thought that was amusing. And illustrative of the whole "small world" theorem.

Good lord. XD Maybe there's a rule somewhere that no matter where you are, a Cepheid has been there.

The $64 Tomato, while really sort of fun, was maybe an hour's worth of reading, tops. Which, for me, puts it into that category of 'takes up too much space in relation to the amount of entertainment provided'.

I'm also bringing a stack of books so never fear, if you speed through yours and run out, you can start on mine!

(I sent you an email...I think, regarding bpal stuff. The part of me that just typed 'I think' is telling me that maybe I composed but didn't send and should double-check my draft folder to be sure. *grin*)

I am pretty sure The $64 Dollar Tomato was a book sold by my agent.
