telophase: (Project Blue Rose)
telophase ([personal profile] telophase) wrote2006-10-14 10:35 pm

My evening tonight...

While I'm working on the marker version of IchiRen (and gagging every time yet another facet of how badly I've screwed up the proportions reveals itself to me), I have watched X-Men 3* , have so far watched half of the live-action version of Cromartie High School**, and have now discovered that there's L** G*ldb*rg vs. Naomi Novik wank***. My evening is complete.

* (short review: if you dumped everyone else out of it and left it a movie about just Wolverine, it would have been so much better because you can never have too much Wolverine. Plus, they got rid of Scott! Whee!)

** The Cromartie High School manga is a gag manga of short (i.e. 3-5 page) comedy snippets parodying gangs in high schools, and the movie is more-or-less the same. Well, it's in an extended version of one of the comedy snippets, which would ahve been better if they'd chopped it up and put other unrelated things in between segments, as the manga does, but it's an entertaining watch.

*** L** G*ldb*rg being a writer who (a) hates fanfiction with the passion of a thousand burning suns and rails on and on about it in his blog at length and who (b) makes a living writing Diagnosis: Murder and Monk tie-in novels. The difference between him and those filthy, filthy fanficcers is that he is doing it out of necessity to put food on the table and has the blessings of the copyright owners, while fanficcers are just evil louses who bloat themselves on the honest work of other people and don't have the souls of writers. Name obscured to keep him or his sycophant M*rk L*rd from doing ego-searches on Google, finding this, and bringing the wank here.****

WOOOOLLLVVVERRIIIIIIINNNNEEEE!!!

Everything is better with a little Wolverine. And no Scott.

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2006-10-15 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
* I thought the movie was incredibly stupid in many, many ways, so I basically agree.

*** Wankity wank wank! Has anyone alerted fandom wank?

**** I bet if you put a plaintive note out on a weekday, not under a cut, and not merely here, but on DA and your T-pop blog, we'd get some.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-10-15 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
* Part of me was thinking wow at how they merrily raped canon, and then I thought ... wait. It's the X-Men. marvel's done a fine job of raping canon theirownselves.

I still want it to be all-Wolverine, all the time, and I was a Wolvie fangirl before Hugh Jackman ever showed up on the scene. Not that I mind more Hugh Jackman at all, mind you.

*** Did you look at the link? That's where I found it. :D And in the comments on the wank, there's a link to a smoking review that someone wrote of his original satirical novel (http://www.geocities.com/~fossilfreak/books/btb.htm) back when it was first published.

**** Yeah, I may have to do that. XD

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2006-10-15 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
* Well, yes, but it was like they picked all the bad canon, then did some bad variations on it. Stupid in every regard.

I love Wolvie too, and I also adore Hugh Jackman's Wolvie, so it's just all good.

*** Yep, got it now. Weird-- it wasn't showing up as a link when I first opened this post.

Wait - it was you that sent the CD, right? I got it, opened it up in the car, then went "Wow! Cool!" and put it in a Very Safe Place so I'd be sure to remember to thank you for it. And now it seems my bag or my apartment has eaten it.... At any rate, it'll show up again fairly soon, and thankyou!!!!! *hopes she remembered who sent it correctly....*

Oh, snazzy idea. With enough fanart, maybe a little fanwank could get going over the canon color of Rivas' eyes. I'm going to have to decide fast between the emerald green, dark amber and sapphire blue camps!

[reposted, slightly modified for phrasing.]

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-10-15 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
I hope for fanwank! I shall remain mum on the true color of his eyes* for the sole purpose of making the fans debate it at length!

And if each side doesn't develop a silly name to call themselves, I shall be sorely disappointed.

* I've actually forgotten what I decided, really. I'll have to go look it up. Or maybe color them differently every time, just to screw with people's heads.

[identity profile] frostedelves.livejournal.com 2006-10-15 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
Note to self: when have more time, sockpuppet/multiple personality up some Rivas eyecolor wank for telophase. Codenames: TrueBlue, Bowie, OMGEnvy and amberissohawt (never capitalized).

* That is a fabulous idea. I actually did have a strong impression of them as green, but I'm never admitting that again (unless I feel like it).

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-10-15 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
Woo-hoo! I shall look forward to it! And maybe create some sockpuppts myself, to post long incomprehensible screeds explaining how Rivas is really Satan. Or maybe Jesus.

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2006-10-15 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I just assumed they were green.

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2006-10-15 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Blue just seems wrong. They should be green, amber, or hazel.

Also, he is Satan and we are legally married in the state of California.

...live-action Cromartie?

Oh, god. Freddie Mercury's there, right? What's the guy playing him look like? Okay, right, Google time...

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-10-15 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yup! :D Doesn't look as much like Freddie Mercury as I'd like, but he's still fairly good.

I've finished the movie now, and it lost momentum when they attempted to put a bit of plot it - about aliens and the guys forming a Global Defense Force - but as far as it goes, it's still Cromartie, so I'm happy. :)

I think this would be a good movie to watch at a con with a group of people familiar with the source material and a bunch of booze.

I was slightly disappointed in Freddie when I found the screenshots - but Kamiyama looked perfect. He was frowning very hard. And I want Mechazawa for an end table.

Aw, putting a plot in there is just not right; the characters aren't supposed to have a long enough attention span to notice if there's plot going on! That's the whole... thing! Hrm.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-10-15 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
Hokuto is perfect, too. But the big, bad boss guy who gets motion sick and can't admit it? They gave him hair. Bleached blond and pulled back in a ponytail, and he's still heavyset, but ... it's just not the same.

They do a lot of panning across the classroom with everyone doing their thing, and there's one guy who's always asleep with one arm flung out. I am fond of him.

They do well until about halfway through, when Kamiyama decides that the Global Defense Force that Hokuto accidentally formed will protect the earth from aliens, and they call aliens to the earth so they can get started protecting it, and then most of the rest of the movie deals with that. With occasional breaks away to throw in unrelated short sketches, which really should have been more of the movie.
