Hmmm...

I am remaining cautiously optimistic about my computer ... it seems that it might just be a RAM stick gone bad. I am back on the computer, back online, down to (oh noes!) SOLELY one gig of RAM, and have just finished a backup of the files that were new since my last backup.

Which took up about half of one DVD, even with me re-burning a lot of the files that had previously been backed up. Woo! SO all of you? BACK UP YOUR COMPUTERS NOW.

Anyway, cross your fingers that it's only the RAM.

I dunno what's wrong with my comp... I added more RAM, there's nearly a Gig now.. but it's still slow and freezes +_+ I just know one day it's going to die and I'll lose it all~~ I hate computers...

I hope yours turns out okay~~~

Sounds like you may have a load of spyware/adware on there - that can slow it down but good.

You can test the RAM with a free program called memtest86, if you want. I've been bitten by bad RAM before too, and much like a bad power supply it can be balls to figure out. If you want memtest96, you can find it here, with some instructions: http://www.memtest86.com/

Basically, boot off a floppy or CD of memtest86 and it should start running the diagnostics. It'll take awhile, so I recommend running it overnight. It will keep looping until you tell it to stop.

Er, the point of doing this is just to have confirmation of the problem, and also to know which stick of RAM is the bad one. :)

Make sure you check one stick at a time (in case it's not obvious that you should)

suck

I've just resurrected my computer after a 1/2 week of it being down. I've been having video vs sound issues and went into the bios to do some stuff. It worked for a bit, then I suddenly got a windows if corrupt error. Repairing didn't work. So I went and reset the bios and now I'm back in, but my original issues are still here, so I have to go beat on my computer again.

Also, I keep all my important files on my 2nd and 3rd hard drive so when I totally screw up I can format my c: drive and not worry.

That makes sense. I think Toby does much the same thing, but he obsessively reinstalls his system like clockwork anyway, so he's got it down to an art.

At any rate, it fails to even boot WIndows when the stick in question is in, and works like normal when the stick is out, so I'm fairly sure it's the stick. :D
