BPAL summary:

A quick rundown of the things that really worked on me and the things that didn't. If any of you have suggestions on what I should put on my wishlist or avoid based on this, let me know. The links go to my own reviews.

Good elements: Amber, cherry, nuts, honey that's not a major note, chocolate and cocoa, vanilla. Perfect scent BROWNIES Light florals: (cherry blossom, orange blossom, apple blossom, plum blossom, peony) Myrrh. Sandalwood. Fruits. Rum. Red wine. Orris.

Bad elements: Musk. O dear god the musk. Apricot. Heavy roses. Non-cherry berries? Certainly very strong berries. Heavier florals. Neroli. Possible allergy to jasmine, definite allergy to cedar. Ginger turns into lemon. Heavy cloves take over, then turn into lemon. Tobacco is interesting, but not to wear. Mint. Lavender. Pumpkin. Milky scents. Baked-goods scents. Vetiver. Leather. Iris turns to soap, same as violet. Dark roses not good. Eucalyptus, menthol, fir, pine, and all sorts of evergreen scents.

(Top note turns nasty.)

  30. Grand Guignol - Our Grand Guignol perfume is a shot of sweet apricot brandy; just enough to settle your nerves after a ghoulish, gory brush with the macabre. (Nice in-vial, but turns to eau de cardboard box on me. No apricot for [livejournal.com profile] telophase!!)

  31. Grandmother of Ghosts - Her scent swirls with a high-pitched tumult of laurel, stargazer lily, splintered woods, peony, mandarin and white musk, and is spiked with pale pepper. (Stops my nose up, stale woods, and then the musk comes out to play. NO.)

If you can get a hold of LE: Spooky, I suspect you might like it. (I don't have it anymore, alas, or I'd pass it on.) Chocolate mint rum mmmm. (I don't know--how are you with mint?)

Hetairiae: honey, patchouli, five, clove, ylang ylang.

The Red Queen: woody, lacquer, cherries and currants. (However. It goes through a cherry cough syrup phase on me. I enjoy this; maybe you wouldn't.)

Aureus: No clue what's in here, but drydown is quite amber-ish. It also goes subtly earthy on me.

Hunger: Black narcissus, orange blossom, vanilla.

Baron Samedi: "our spin on traditional Bay Rum." It went spicy on me--but Hellcat and Bastet made me think of this. (Imp available. Yours for the asking; ditto any other availables.)

Dragon's Milk: dragon's blood and honeyed vanilla. It's a pretty, soothing scent. (I have no idea whether dragon's blood behaves like musk or like amber. I feel the latter--but I could be very wrong.)

Alice: Milk and honey, rose, carnation, bergamot. Frankly, I never detected the florals here and this faded pretty damn quickly. (Imp available.)

Athens: myrrh, honey, red wine, sweet flowers. (A guess--myrrh explodes and becomes icky on my skin, so it's hard to gauge.) (Available.)

White Rabbit: black tea, milk, white pepper, ginger, honey, vanilla, linen.

Yeah. I'm gonna be of decreasing use because I actively seek out berries and musk. :-p There are a couple imps in the current box I haven't tried yet that might be up your alley--I'll update once I can get this !@#$%@#$@#$ myrrh to depart my skin for good. (It's been something like 18 hours. I mean, for cryin' out loud.)

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-08-21 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Not sure how I am with mint - I don't like the taste of overly minty things, but I don't have a clear opinion on the smell.

Sure, I'm willing to take your availables up there - Baron Samedi, Alice, Athens. If there's anything I've got that you want, have at 'em. My current availables are:

Grand Guignol
Jester
Katharina
Machu Picchu
Seraphim
Spellbound
The Lady Of Shalott

and I've got five more in the box to try, at the moment (with five more in the mail, heh), so that list should be expanding next week.

Myrrh on you sounds like musk on me. XD Overnight, with two soap-and-water washings, two alcohol rubdowns, and a full shower, I could still smell it. If only the scents I liked had that staying power!

[identity profile] yhlee.livejournal.com 2005-08-21 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
I have your address, unless it's changed. Do you have mine? *flails* (I'm at requiescat at cityofveils dot com).

I'll take a gander at Seraphim and Spellbound. I keep questing for a scent with rose that will work on me. :-) (I have found a sandalwood-ish scent that works on me, so all is not lost.)

Don't you wish that the scents that you love were the ones that lasted overnight-plus? It just ain't fair.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-08-21 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Well, maybe Spellbound will last long on you *and* work. :)

They're both decants, but strong enough that it's pretty obvious they're not diluted (after a recent wank on the BPAL forums :D). I'm not sure I've got your address in an easily findable spot, but I'll email you. I haven't changed.

[identity profile] i-smile.livejournal.com 2005-08-21 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
(If you do end up wanting to try out The Red Queen as suggested by [livejournal.com profile] yhlee, I have an imp of it I could send off. I wasn't impressed: I like cherry cough syrup, but it was this awful bitter-cherry for the first hour on me, and then turned into something that smelled like eating a coconut & nougat bar, only somehow not awesome. :D)

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-08-21 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, sounds great. :) Anything you want on my list there in answer to [livejournal.com profile] yhlee? (except for Seraphim and Spellbound, which she's taking) My email is telophase14 at gmail for various address-swappingness.

...wait, does trading mean that I'm getting sucked in? :D

[identity profile] i-smile.livejournal.com 2005-08-21 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Machu Picchu, maybe? But let me know if postage to Australia's too high; I'm happy to send this one off as a trade or for free.

Re: ...wait, does trading mean that I'm getting sucked in? :D

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-08-21 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
YOU ARE ENSNARED YOU CANNOT ESCAPE!!

Nah, postage won't be too high; they're teeny. :) I won't guarantee it'll make it through the mail, just like I won't count on yours getting to me - I have no idea if them drug-n-alcohol sniffin' dogs will alert on them or not, but it's worth a shot. :) telophase14 at gmail for address-swappin'

Stay away from: Yerevan. The apricot is deadly in it.

I'm not sure how your skin would work with peach -- some people can't tell the difference between them. My skin definitely can. Like, markedly different. (Or maybe my nose just has the appropriate fu, I don't know.)

Yoon gave you some good suggestions already.

I'll look through my collection and see if there's anything in there that might work for you. (Especially since most of my collection is LE.)

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2005-08-21 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. :) I've made a note about Yerevan.

Your link for lightning is wrong. It goes back to this page.

Strangely, I can't find that entry. I wonder if I even posted the review?

Hi--[livejournal.com profile] bastmoon directed me to this page; I was asking about bpal and how to organize scents you like, didn't like, etc. just wanted to say hi and that I'm adding this to my memories so I can find reviews, etc. Just started this new addiction... :-D
do you swap/sell on any of the lj comms?

*wave* Hi! I swap/sell on [livejournal.com profile] alchemylab, for the most part, although I ahvne't posted one in a while. I'll probab ly be posting next week, though. :)

Yeeeeeeup, wandered over here from fandom_wank and have just about read all of these, up to Nanshe. Your cat is a hoot, <3's.

:D I got the idea from [livejournal.com profile] oyceter, who has rats and lets them sniff and reports their responses. And now, if I don't put the cat's response, people are all "What did the cat think?"

I love ginger, but it turns into faint lemon on me. I like lemon, but it turns into Lemon Pledge on me. I like the idea of ozone, but it turns into detergent and dryer sheets on me. And the apricot! *cries* Myrrh was the total surprise - I didn't know what it smelled like, nor realized how well it would work. XD

And there are things I like, but not as wearable scents: Miskatonic University is very comforting, even though I don't drink coffee, because my parents made coffee every monring, so I woke up to it. But I wouldn't wear it around.

Came here from most recent reviews, finding VERY helpful. It seems like you and I have similar preferences/skin chemistry, so I am encouraged to try some of the ones you rilly liked. :D

Oh good. :D My current favorites are Versailles and Brisingamen.

If ambers work on you, then Jacob's Ladder probably will - I've heard that from several people, hence my desire to find a sample before the Yule series goes away.

how good are you with rosewater?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-05-16 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Depends. Very light roses are OK, but much heavier and it turns into grandma perfume. :D
