That meme again...

...because it ended up pretty amusing.

Instructions:

1 Grab the nearest book
2 Open the book to page 123
3 Find the fifth sentence.
4 Post the text of the next 3 sentences on your blog along with these instructions
5 Don't you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest.
CHARLEY: Brandishing a Kalashnikov, Ewan burst out of the kitchen door, closely followed by David. For a split second, I thought everything was about to go horribly wrong: the heavies would assume Ewan, having heard the gunshots, had imagined I'd been wasted and had seized a loaded machine gun to shoot his way out of the compound. With so much armoury in circulation, the potential for unintentional carnage was enormous if anyone misread the situation.
Any idea what it is yet? It's a travel book, nonfiction. And yes, that really is the person who most likely sprang to your mind when you read that name.

Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman's Long Way Round: Chasing Shadows Across the World, an account of their motorcycle trip around the world between movies. My book-pimping friend (we push books on each other all the time) loaned it to me a couple of weeks ago, and I'm picking it up and reading a few pages here and there. Havne't got to page 123 yes, so I have no idea what that's all about. McGregor's still making movies, however, so I presume they didn't actually get shot and left to die like dogs in the dirt.

I've read an article about this book, so I knew where the quote came from, even though I couldn't remember the title. Would you recommend it from what you've read so far?

From my grand vista of page 35: yes. Mind you, they're only now leaving London. :D

His body was as light as air and his soul was filled with joy. "Can I now come live with you?" he asked. "Since you have saved my life, can I now give you that life forever?"

The story of King Arthur and His Knights Retold from the Howard Pyle original

(we bought it to read at bedtime for the girls)

I had no idea Ewan McGregor was such a badass. Fun. :D

There aren't five lines on page 123 of the book closest to me this time, so have a picture of the whole page instead:

I second [livejournal.com profile] herchuckness whole-heartedly. I had no idea that Ewan MacGregor could be so hardcore. And now, of course, I can't stop thinking about it.

Dude, I must read that!

"You'd better wipe your lips," you said, producing a handkerchief from your handbag.

Since you don't normally use a lot of makeup, I didn't think it was really necessary, but I wiped my lips once, mechanically. As I had suspected, nothing had rubbed off on the handkerchief.

"Rub a bit harder."

This is from The Book of Masks, by Hwang Sun-won, a book of short stories. I haven't read any of them yet.

:D The viewpoint alternates every page or two between McGregor and Boorman, which doesn't work that well for me, but it's still interesting. They're in Prague now, and the producer of the TV program they're filming along the way (to fund the trip) just had a meltdown. :D

And in the Antarctica book, I got to what is the most interesting part so far: they went to the Russian base for a weekend, and what happens when you get a bunch of Russian men together with Australians and a limitless supply of vodka? Yeah. :) The Russians have a sauna on their base! And the men on the base have been there for two years and don't know when they're going home.

And the next day, they walked the 5 km to the Indian base, which is the last part I listeend to - they just got there. I had no clue that the Indians maintained an Antarctic base. Quite cool.

"You can do it, Astro!"

"I'll do my best!"

"Go, Astro Boy!!"

I feel like this means I win.

(It's from Astro Boy volume 1, as one might expect.)
