Sporking will have to wait...

...until I've actually finished reading Return to Labyrinth. I'm on deadline at work now (and going in to work both Saturday and Sunday) and thus was nicely wrung out.

Did nothing but play Kingdom Hearts until I was close to throwing up from motion sickness and decided that it was not the state of mind in which to be reading manga, in order to give them a fair shake. :) Instead, finished The Ruins of Gorlan, which is book 1 of a YA series called Ranger's Apprentice. Which was exactly what I've been wanting recently: decent workhorse fantasy that focuses on one person and doesn't attempt to take too much on and become Epic. The general plot is coming-of-age: 14-year-old Will is an orphan* raised at Castle Redmont who dreams of becoming a hero and attending basic training Battleschool, but instead is apprenticed to the weird Ranger who hangs around and unnerves everyone.

I think I'd have liked more time on the mundanities of his training, because that sort of thing, when done right, is fascinating, but it's probably just right for its intended audience. :D

Have also received Inda, by [livejournal.com profile] sartorias, from Amazon today. Shall retire to my bed to fall asleep over it now.

ETA: As I went to post this, the cat, who was sleeping peacefully on the back of the sofa, leaped two feet straight into the air, came down, and scrambled to the other side of the room. I have no idea why, but she's not puffed up or anything. Although she is now proceeding with caution and carefully batting everything within reach once or twice to make sure it's not suddenly going to attack. I think maybe she heard something outside - I had the iPod on so couldn't tell, but there's people hanging out in the pool and making noise. It was either that or she dreamed something that freaked her out. Poor freaky kitty.

* Orphans are usually the heirs to great kingdoms or something, aren't they? At any rate, without giving anything away, I shall just say I was satisfied with the way it turned out.
