Paging [profile] badnoodles

[livejournal.com profile] fascinoma wants to know... just what is this bug? Besides cute and furry. And possibly fake (if it is, it moves nicely and is a nice job).

Yeah, I've been asked this question a lot over the past several days.

The consensus is that it's most like a brown morph of the Puss Caterpillar/Southern Flannel Moth, Megalopyge opercularis.

Well, they don't call it "viral video" for nothing, I suppose.

That...is creepy. I don't ever want to see that thing in my house. Not that we have any of those interesting creatures here in Northern VA...

Everybody else is like, "oh, how cute, I want to pet it!" while I'm like, "AAAAIIIIIIEEEEE WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT." The fact that it's a real bug and not a puppet scares the crap out of me. *hides in a plastic bubble*

On a related note, [profile] remus_shepherd linked to a bunch of pictures of caterpillers eating Sweden (http://user.it.uu.se/~svens/larverna/normal.html)

*shudder*
