Book meme

Lemming-like, I post. Ganked from [livejournal.com profile] rurounitriv

1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next 3 sentences on your blog along with these instructions.
5. Don't you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I
know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest.

'I must tell you,' said Tripitaka, 'that I was admitted to the Order almost as soon as I left my mother's womb, and have never in my life indulged in meats of this kind.' The hunter thought for a while. 'My family,' he said at last, 'has on the contrary for generations past been accustomed to eat meat.'

Good thing I brought this book up to the ref desk - the next closest book is the phone book, and that would have been much more boring.

'"Welcome!" he said. "Welcome to a new year at Hogwarts! Before we begin our banquet, I would like to say a few words. And here they are: Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak! Thank you!"'

XD Oh, no one would be able to guess what book I just grabbed off the shelf...

Marcel Proust, Remembrance of Things Past?

XD

The first book, nearest me, was no good. Page 123 read only, "Part Two".

So here goes, with the second nearest book:
"It's odd, but being insulted by a flickering specter or being called names by a fiery winged serpent isn't half as annoying for a hardened magician as hearing it from the mouth of something that seems to be human. Don't ask me why. It's just something to do with the way people's minds work."

The size of both the long sticthes and the steps can vary (see below). Both patterns are ideal for use as background in a needlepoint piece. A second color can be easily introduced into either pattern by alternating the color of yarn used for the rows.

- The Reader's Digest Complete Guide to Needlework (Which needs a home, I have two copies.)

blunder, n. 1. mistake, error, flaw, fault, inaccuracy; botch, abortion, miscarriage, fiasco, fizzle, foozle, fumble, Sl. screwup; misunderstanding, misconception; inadvertence, omission, oversight, slip, Inf. slip-up, Sl. boo-boo, Sl. goof, Sl. boner; folly, stupidity, foolishness.

(okay so it's not three sentences, but really, what do you expect from "The Synonym Finder". My hands were getting tired, and that was only end of the first entry for blunder, there were two more that were longer...)

First to sparkylibrarian: sounds intriguing, what's the book's name?

Secondly my bit:
The howl immediately began to fade, as if whatever or whoever had made it were fleeing at an unimaginable rate. "What was that?" Kalten exclaimed.

Ah! Amulet of Samarkand by Jonathan Stroud. Most excellent story.

"There is a scientific way to describe a flower in botany that is different from how a flower is described in any other context. A Lab Report or Scientific Paper has certain well-defined parts, put together in a particular order, each with its own functions and relations to the others (that is, they are genres). A proof in Geometry is a genre, and so is a sonnet in poetry."

Hey! Isn't that Journey into the West? You must report on it!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
:D Yup! With an eye to eventually writing a column that looks at how Saiyuki and maybe Dragonball Z took elements of the legend and twisted them.

It's the Haley translation, which means that it's nicely readable, but he seemed to translate chapters on a whim, so there's a lot of adventures he left out, I am givne to understand from the introduction.I can't really fiure out his criteria for translating them, but the CHinese man who wrote the intro says that he agrees with Haley's choices, although he hopes that in the future he'll issue a fully-translated version because some of his favorite tales as a boy are in the untranslated chapters. :D

It's known in China as Monkey, apparently, and that's what the version I've got is titled.

Then Darktan said: "I am sorry. Impertinence was not intended." Peaches picked up the astonishment amongst the older males who were watching. Darktan!

I just finished the audiobook of that. XD

If I were at home, that would also be my response.

Since I'm at work, you all get:

"The court of appeals may undertake review and approval of a settlement with the objector, perhaps as part of appeal settlement procedures, or may remand to the district court to take advantage of the district court's familiarity with the action or settlement.

"Subdivision (g). Subdivision (g) is new. It responds to the reality that the selection and activity of class action counsel are often critically important to the successful handling of a class action."

This is why I rarely do this meme. =>

Hey, I have that book! That translation, too. Neat.

if (empty ($email)) {
   print '<p>Please enter your email address.</p';
}

Each of these is a repeat of the first name validation, but you switch the variable names and change the print() statements accordingly. You don't validate the other form inputs using this syntax for reasons you'll see as the chapter progresses.

Boy, wasn't that exciting.

'In other words, you wish me to help you back out of one of your honourable obligations, what?'

'What?'

'That's what I said - "What"? Good God!' cried Chuffy, and I dare say he quivered from head to foot, but I couldn't see properly, it being too dark.

---

Lucky I'm about to go read this, otherwise I'd be keying in something in Korean.

And, just my luck, the closest book was in Japanese. D'oh.

...what, you didn't want that *translated* or anything, did ya? ;)

whoops, left out a pronoun

[identity profile] homasse.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Because I'm not that evil (and I looked up the couple words I didn't know):

"It seemed as though milk and apples were foods that held a special meaning for him. Across from the register, his eye in passing fell upon fish cakes that were in plastic containers, and he picked one up. After checking the expiration date written on the side, he put it in his basket."

...well, wasn't that exciting. >XD

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Hee. XD And I don't even have the Japanese character set installe don this computer, so it read:

????????????????????????????
????????????????????????
????????????????????????????
????????????????????

Heh, a meme that looks fun! I'm game, and we lucked out since my phone book in one step farther away from...

"Gladia raised one hand. Undoubtedly, she was under observation, for, in a moment, a robot moved in noiselessly, with a glass of water on a tray and a small dish of what looked like crackers with a pinkish blob on each.
Bailey could not forbear taking one, even though he was not certain what it might be."

Much more interesting than three entries under the beauty section of the yellow pages. We also lucked out that this particular book was misplaced into the 'S' section of my bookshelf, because the entry of the book next to it was rather dull.

[identity profile] inkblot14.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 01:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh..

"You have a young man, Tiffany. He sends you letters and packages. You go into Lancre Town every week to send letters to him."

Only three sentances? You'll hate me when you figure this out.

-bink

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Knowing your proclivities, obviously a Tiffany Aching novel. By you saying you'll hate me and the fact that I don't recognize the passage ... did you get your hands on a copy of Wintersmith...?

I am a weak, weak man.

And, of course, a huge Pratchett fan boy.

The secret is EBay and three special letters: ARC

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Heehee. :) Makes sense. XD

[identity profile] bluesira.livejournal.com 2006-08-05 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, out of the books on my desk, that is also one that I have. I was glancing about and thinking...
A recipe book probably isn't good to quote from. There's lots fo lists in it. And for manga, many of the pages don;t even have five sentences. And then there's The Synonym Finder. Which I now can;t post because you already did. XD

[identity profile] rachel-renee.livejournal.com 2006-08-05 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
This made me giggle! :~)

Sorry for making it difficult for you!
