ARGH

Is there anyone online right now with experience with Adobe InDesign? I'm trying to export to PDF right now, and it's doing something it wasn't doing the last time I did this - namely, chopping the bleed off the facing page and sticking it on the current page. ARGH.

hello :)
Did you check the pdf settings?

[identity profile] mvmarcz.livejournal.com 2006-07-30 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
:loads indesign: :)

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-07-30 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, if you're talking about the presets.... hm. The box that says "Crop iamge data to frames" is checked, and I assume it ought to be so - the presets for the original save had it checked. That seems like it ought to be what's controlling it. Well, logically at any rate.

*goes to uncheck box and try again*

what version are you in?

[identity profile] mvmarcz.livejournal.com 2006-07-30 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
ooo I have CS2
I go in File>Adobe PDF Presets>Define>New>Marks and bleeds
and you can set the bleed amounts

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-07-30 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
I'll see what I can do as soon as this test export finishes. :)

I hope I can help, my main area of knowledge was Quark but they're so similar and all

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-07-30 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Heh.

At any rate, I've got it set to use the bleed amounts in the file itself. I'll set some custom bleeds and see if that helps any.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-07-30 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
Ah-ha-ha-ha I think that was my problem. The bleeds set in the document were making it go funny. I'll export the whole thing now and see if that holds true.

:crosses her fingers for you!:

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-07-30 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
ARG it seemed to help on some pages but not on others. WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY *existential rage*

[identity profile] mvmarcz.livejournal.com 2006-07-30 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
because all computer programs exist to cause un wanted greif :(

And I'm sure it'll turn out to be some minute issue -_-

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-07-30 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
Probably. :( I'm trying something else - mybe THIS will work...

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-07-30 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
No, dammit, back to the drawing board...

(The document blee settings are .25" all around - when I took it off the "Use document bleed settings" frist, I didn't set any bleed, which was happy for a few pages but not for others. And then I set the .25" bleed in the Export Document Present thing, and that was back to square one. ARG)

[identity profile] mvmarcz.livejournal.com 2006-07-30 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
:/ it sounds like one of those problems where just have to keep playing with it and try to not to kill something

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-07-30 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. If this last messing about with settings doesn't work, I'm going to try re-layong-out a few pages from scratch and seeing if that works. :P

[identity profile] mvmarcz.livejournal.com 2006-07-30 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
if that doesn't helo I'd say saveall work, restart and try that, sometimes that fixes all my issues

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-07-30 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
I'm saying fuck it to the bleed and instead of a 5.5x8.5" page with .25" bleed, I'm going for a 6x9" document with no bleed. Once I re-save the new imeges that I managed to save with no compression, thus resulting in enormous tiffs, I'm going to lay out the first ten pages and re-export from there.

It's going to drive me crazy why it worked the first time, though. It's like when I go back to ASP or PHP code that I used on websites, and look at it, and have no idea how it could possibly have worked, because it's clearly wrong, wrong, wrong. [livejournal.com profile] selenite IDed that for me as a heisenbug, and it makes me feel at least a little better to know that it happens to others. *sigh*

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-07-30 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
I think this is finally going to do it - and the re-layout seems to be solving a weird problem where the margins didn't quite fit the live zone where the text was in the previous version. Huh.

I certainly don't need bleed or crop marks printed on the piece, so this should work just fine.

Thanks! :D

... I have a 100 page book to layout in InDesign over the next month... I hope this isn't an indication of what I can expect!
*weep*

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-07-30 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
It wasn't playing nicely with the bleed. Once I laid it out again on 6x9" pages instead of 5.5 x 8.5" pages with a .25" bleed, it behaved. If I were you, I'd lay out a few pages and do a test export. :D
