A quick question...

...before I leave for OMG an actual social encounter*; if Okano Reiko's Onmyoji-ji or Yomi Henjo Yawa have been scanlated? She's one of the mangaka featured in Manga: Masters of the Art by Timothy Lehmann, and the sample pages of both intrigue me. Both set in Heian Japan; Onmyoji-ji is a manga version of novels by Yumemakura Baku about Abe no Seimei, and the other is apparently a comedy about a young nobleman who's assigned a dead-end position investigating ghosts and spirits.

And the art for both? In the samples: OMGWONDERFUL. The second especially - it's reminiscent of Japanese scroll painting.

No scanlations as far as I know, and I've been looking for them ever since last year, when I happened to randomly order v. 1 of Onmyouji and then went all swoony over the art when it arrived. I wish I could afford to buy the whole series.

She's also done a version of Patricia McKillip's The Forgotten Beasts of Eld, too; there are some sample pages here (http://www.ubcfumetti.com/preview/0406a.htm). I'd pay good money (or blood, whatever) to get ahold of that one.

*cries* Going by the art, I think it would be worth learning Japanese to read them.

[Unknown site tag] has a theory for getting manga licensed (http://coffeeandink.livejournal.com/603171.html) - because saying out loud that something will never be licensed is a surefire predictor that it will - so in that vein, I shall say here that there's no way Onmyo-ji and Yomi Henjo Yawa will be licensed, because there's no room over here for exquisitely drawn historical fantasies.

There's a couple of sample pages of Forgotten Beasts in this book as well - lovely stuff. Hm. In Italian? I wodner if the other two are in Italian ... a good session with my Italian dictionaries and I could probably get the gist of what's going on...

OMG! ::says [Unknown LJ tag].: I loved the Reiko Okano stuff in the exhibit I saw but I didn't realize there was more in the Masters of Manga book. ::Rushes off to bedroom to look for book.::

And it's got her website (http://www.najanaja.co.jp/), too! *bookmarks*

It's that, or the licensing companies monitor the internet buzz. So, the thing to do is get someone to start scanlating it, then fanpush like mad and get buzz going. Just as it starts getting interesting, it'll get licensed and be unavilable for months. >XD

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-07-29 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
If I had the time to scan or edit or copyedit, I'd so be doing it. XD

I love how that thing predicts that a.) Mushishi will never be licensed and also b.) hopes that Del Rey will get it, because that is EXACTLY what happened at Comic-Con.

eee so excited ee

Yup! Exactly!

omg! Onmyoji! I just saw both movies last month and they're awesome. The costumes (and Seimei) are beautiful. I have never seen any scanlations from the manga though.
vol 1 -- 4592132114 (isbn) Have your local comic shop order it. :)

The mod of the [livejournal.com profile] onmyoujium community has been doing text translations of vol 1 and 2, I believe.

Yomi Henjo Yawa will never be translated because it not only has way too much sex it's a BLOODY BRAIN-EATING SCREW THE READERS ROUND AND ROUND AND ROUND HEARTBREAKER OF A BITCH OF A MANGA. I ranted about it over at Aestheticism (http://www.aestheticism.com/visitors/manga/youmi_henjou/index.htm) when I read it but without revealing the biggest WTFery of the thing: which I'm prepared to reveal to you if you really want to hear it.

It would be nice if some Okano got translated because she loves being obscure and occasionally midnight black in her dialogue. And I have to say I'm not a fan of her art style. She draws Seimei to look like a brilliantined 30's lounge lizard.

Oooh, translations, sweet. :D

I'd be willing to hear the WTFery - it looks like it's going to be a big long time before I get actual translations of them, if at all, and thus not much point in attempting to remain spoiler-free.

I think I shall order book 1 of each of the two series from amazon.co.jp* and decide if I want to continue getting them after that. XD

* apologies to [livejournal.com profile] ninja_tech - I literally do not have a local comic shop,as the closest one is in anotehr city 45 minutes away.

Spoilers then, lux'd so people needn't be spoiled unless they want to be.

General Dragon Gem, yes? who appears on the covers of vols 2 and 3, has been commanded by Emperor Black Warrior to find him an Immortal. The emperor and the general almost seem to have a thing going off-stage, though Dragongem seems to have a lot going with a lot of people off-stage. In one story Li Seitan sneaks into some, ohh, oni is it?'s harem, disguised as a eunuch, to suss out the oni; is discovered and as ever rescued by Dragongem who disguises himself as a woman for the mission. And stays in female clothes as they make their way to the palace to present the oni or whatever to the Emperor, because 'the Emperor likes to see me in female dress.'

Err yes. Dragongem in fact is not only an Immortal, she is a she. Who returns to Taoist Paradise on whatever mountain it is in vol 3, to confront her sisters who seem to be playing a game of Go that affects what Dragongem does. Or maybe not. Maybe they're just laying bets on what Dragongem and Li Seitan will do next.
The dialogue is beyond obscure and gives no help at all. Characters appear without introduction and nothing makes any kind of linear sense. For no good reason Dragongem goes floating down a stream somewhere rather as Seimei does in one of the Onmyouji manga. Okano likes characters who play Ophelia in the Milky Way, is all I can guess. There's probably a good reason why Mulholland Drive is referenced here, though I'm damned if I know where Zenobia of Palmyra comes in.

Interesting! XD Thanks. :)

I put an order in for volume 1 of each of the series: it sounds like I'd be just about as lost with a translation as without, so I might as well read it in Japanese. Heh. :)

I keep hoping some poor sod of a Chinese translator got asked to do it and one could at least follow their lead as to interpretation. But not, evidently.
