You can ink on a computer CG program? O__o how?! Like...actually use the mouse and go over each line with a pencil/brush tool? Isn't that suicide on the hand though? Or is it a tablet (though that'd still be a killer)?
Uh ... yeah. :D It's just like drawing in a computer program, only you do it on a layer above your original drawing. And it's not any more a killer than inking traditionally is. I pencilled and inked all of Project Blue Rose digitally, and all the inking practice I've been doing in the past week or so and posting here is digital.
I've got a Wacom tablet. No way I'd do it with a mouse - the RSI in my wrist is bad enough as is.
Yup! At least the EX version does. In fact I did the linework for Kenshin above on a vector layer - the same pen tool will produce vector stuff on vector layers that you can then smooth, thicken, thin, or do some other manipulations to. You can't fill a space on a vector layer - for the big black areas, I put a raster layer underneath the vector and filled there (the selection and fill tools have the option to select/fill using all layers or just the layer you're on).
Of the pages I'd been inking for practice, most of those were on a raster layer, but there was enough swirliness in Kenshin here that I went with the vector layer so as to be able to smooth the lines out.
If you've got an academic connection, either yourself or a friend, MangaStudio EX is at academicsuperstore.com for $95 the last time I looked ($300 normally). The Debut version is much cheaper ($30/50), but it doesn't have vector tools, so you don't want it.
You can't export the page and preserve the vector-ness, though. Once you finish it and want to put it into Photoshop or whatever, the exported file will be raster.
Hi! I've been following your entries with interest. I especially admire your articles on the panels/layouts of Japanese manga.
I have a question I hope you can answer; I have Manga Studio and I was wondering what exactly was the name of the tone you used for Kenshin's outfit? This would IMMENSELY help me. Thanks in advance.
Thanks for the hint. If you can check later and answer back with the specific name that would help more, but I'm definitely searching for "the one" right this moment!
I can't find my original file - it's backed up on disk somewhere - but a few minutes' playing around produces the conviction that I did it using the Computones plugin I got with MS EX, using one of the noise/sand tones in the numbered range 163-196. I can't say for sure which one without seeing the original file, but I think it was about 20-30%, and one of the higher line densities - 65% maybe, which means it might be #177.

I'm really frustrated with digital inking. Inking should raise a solid piece to a great piece (or in my case, a weak peace to a mediocre piece =P)

Re: Tone Name
I can't remember exactly, but it was one of the sand tones, I think. I'll try to remember to fire up MS when I get home and check.
