Naruto ... the Musical
Found when browsing the Tpop forums - pictures from the Naruto musical, and a short clip that appears to be an interview with the four main actors (Gaara, Naruto, Sasuke, and someone who seems to be made up for the musical).

I think the most entertaining part of it is that Naruto gets cheerleaders.

The other interesting thing is that while movie and TV costumes have to be better than stage costumes, they don't have to be as good as cosplay either - they're designed to be seen on low-resolution screens* and, for the most part, not visible for very long or in great detail, so they can get away with shortcuts. I went to the Star Wars exhibit twice, and the belts with all sorts of doodads that the Imperial officers were wearing? Painted wood. Princess Leia's shoes? Generic satin prom shoes. You'd never have known onscreen.
(The Lord of the Rings costumes, OTOH, were actually very finely detailed and well made, unusually so for a movie (I saw the exhibit in London). Except that they still did Movie Cloaks for the characters, which don't meet across the chest and thus are useless to warm or protect anyone, which annoyed the fool out of me.)
* We'll see what HDTV does to the costume-design industry.

I had a chance to see the LOTR costume exhibit when it was up here in Toronto, but unfortunatley I was more poor than I am right now and couldn't afford to go. BTW, no one go see the LOTR musical. It's crap. I personally haven't seen it, but it bombed in TO and from what I've heard from the critics, for damn good reason. It was nothing more than a money grab on the part of the guy who wrote it. It's now going to England to be shown there in Sept.

So, who here speaks Japanese and can translate the video? I'm curious who the silver-haired guy in the blue lame vest was.

-- they all watch and like the anime
-- they all love Naruto, as a character
-- they think the costumes and makeup of the musical are very good
-- they think the guy in the silver hair etc. was 'designed to scare small children in the audience' (with an implication of 'and not scare anybody else'
That's really all I can do for you; I assume he's just the random original-to-musical villain walk-on.

...do they have real naked chicks for the Sexy no Jutsu? :-)
The comments in Japanese are a lot about how they're surprised at how well the kiddos in the audience pay attention, and cheer on Naruto and stuff ("Go, Naruto! Fight!"). The comment about Mr. Blue Shiny Shoulders being scary was party of that--he can hear the kids in the audience go, "Scary!" when he comes on stage.
And everybody likes Sasuke because he's so cool. :-D

Sasuke is not cool! Sasuke is a PRETTY PRETTY EMO PRINCESS!! Once everyone just comes to that realization, all of the world's problems will be solved.
