Naruto ... the Musical

Found when browsing the Tpop forums - pictures from the Naruto musical, and a short clip that appears to be an interview with the four main actors (Gaara, Naruto, Sasuke, and someone who seems to be made up for the musical).

I think the most entertaining part of it is that Naruto gets cheerleaders.

I had a pretty good laugh at the costumes of the characters who seem to have been made up for the music. Also, my brain kept going, "And now...jazz hands!"

I'm kinda glad they got rid of Sasuke's battle shorts, but they put him in satin instead, so he's even more of a pretty, pretty princess.

Okay, I hadn't watched the clip when I commented before. OMG, the cheerleaders are even funnier than the pictures suggested!

can you say 'tight budget'?

...is it sad that I've seen cosplay better than this?

I was thinking that.

See my reply to her. :D

Partially. However, from my one semester of costume design in college, I can tell you that cosplayers actually have to have higher standards than theatrical designers, because cosplay costumes are designed ot be seen from close up and in horrible lighting conditions. The designer for the musical was designing to be seen from thirty feet away, under carefully designed and set stage lighting. :D The stitching that contributes to the ick that is Sasuke's shirt is invisible for that. :D

The other interesting thing is that while movie and TV costumes have to be better than stage costumes, they don't have to be as good as cosplay either - they're designed to be seen on low-resolution screens* and, for the most part, not visible for very long or in great detail, so they can get away with shortcuts. I went to the Star Wars exhibit twice, and the belts with all sorts of doodads that the Imperial officers were wearing? Painted wood. Princess Leia's shoes? Generic satin prom shoes. You'd never have known onscreen.

(The Lord of the Rings costumes, OTOH, were actually very finely detailed and well made, unusually so for a movie (I saw the exhibit in London). Except that they still did Movie Cloaks for the characters, which don't meet across the chest and thus are useless to warm or protect anyone, which annoyed the fool out of me.)

* We'll see what HDTV does to the costume-design industry.

Very interesting! I had heard that about the LOTR costumes and wanted to see the exhibit!

Another factor is endurance. Some materials last better than others, stretch better, and some doodads are best done carefully or not at all.

Also, however, cosplay enthusiasts are trying to make themselves look as perfect as possible and they take the time to perfect the costume. Theatres are crunched for time and have to make amends. Also, cosplay is made to be worn as a costume. In theatre, you are up on a hot stage doing a lot of movement, so you need the costume to be flexible enough to move around in for dancing and stunts. You also need the material to be light so you don't overheat. Cosplay = accuracy. Theatre = modified for practical purposes.

I had a chance to see the LOTR costume exhibit when it was up here in Toronto, but unfortunatley I was more poor than I am right now and couldn't afford to go. BTW, no one go see the LOTR musical. It's crap. I personally haven't seen it, but it bombed in TO and from what I've heard from the critics, for damn good reason. It was nothing more than a money grab on the part of the guy who wrote it. It's now going to England to be shown there in Sept.

...boggle. The cheerleaders!

So, who here speaks Japanese and can translate the video? I'm curious who the silver-haired guy in the blue lame vest was.

I didn't catch very much, because they talk very fast, but I did manage to get the following things out of it:

-- they all watch and like the anime
-- they all love Naruto, as a character
-- they think the costumes and makeup of the musical are very good
-- they think the guy in the silver hair etc. was 'designed to scare small children in the audience' (with an implication of 'and not scare anybody else'

That's really all I can do for you; I assume he's just the random original-to-musical villain walk-on.

I need a copy. I need a tape. I have a pressing need to put this with my Sailor Moon musical collection.

A pity more Naruto characters don't prance about in inappropriately tight leotards. *sniff*

[identity profile] dragonscholar.livejournal.com 2006-07-06 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
If you want inappropriate prancing, Orochimaru is your man.

ZOMGbies! This looks like sheer genius.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-07-06 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Can you imagine the sheer amount of extras needed for the Kage Bunshin?

[identity profile] greenapple2004.livejournal.com 2006-07-06 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
*boggles*

...do they have real naked chicks for the Sexy no Jutsu? :-)

The comments in Japanese are a lot about how they're surprised at how well the kiddos in the audience pay attention, and cheer on Naruto and stuff ("Go, Naruto! Fight!"). The comment about Mr. Blue Shiny Shoulders being scary was party of that--he can hear the kids in the audience go, "Scary!" when he comes on stage.

And everybody likes Sasuke because he's so cool. :-D

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-07-06 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
XD Yeah, I can imagine how the kids would love it and participate. XD

Sasuke is not cool! Sasuke is a PRETTY PRETTY EMO PRINCESS!! Once everyone just comes to that realization, all of the world's problems will be solved.

...Why do those look like the same people who did the Bleach musical...?

*is scarred, goes to share so other people are broken as well*

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-07-06 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
Probably the same ones who did the Saiyuki musical as well. XD
