Hrm. The head of reference at the library I work at is on a monthlong vacation with her husband to several countries in Southeast Asia. Last week they were in Saigon, and I'm not sure where they're supposed to be this week, but I know that Thailand is on their itinerary. You can understand that I'm a bit apprehensive at the moment. They're probably OK, just based on the power of statistics, but I'm sure that they won't be able to contact anybody here for a while because I bet all the phone lines in that area of the world are tied up. I keep checking my TCU email, though, just to see if anyone has any news.

Which leads me to muse on other things, including something that most of you don't know, having friended me only in the past year - remember the bombings on Bali? One of the few Americans who died was my cousin, Karri Casner. A cousin removed once or twice, being the grandchild of my grandmother's brother or something like that, and not one I was close to - I'm not sure I ever met her and if I did it was probably at a wedding or a funeral. So I have this weird combination of being personally affected by the bombing, but not really emotionally affected.

Anyway - thanks to everyone who offered to help me translate a letter into French - I went with [livejournal.com profile] scrunchions on the basis that hers was the first offer I saw in my inbox. :)

No Phones

I'm betting you're right on the phones. As far as I know, Mom hasn't heard from my siblings. She's not worried though, they live in the northeast of Thailand and not near Phuket.

That's good. I can't find any maps that give a rough estimation of where the damage was - they highlight entire countries, and I doubt that the Indian Himalayas were affected very much by it. I think what I want is something with color-coding that shows which coastlines were hit the worst.

Earthquake

Best information I can find is here:

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/recenteqsww/Quakes/usslav.htm

Dig around the site, it'll have info on all the aftershocks and following earthquakes that have happened.

Here's what I've dug up. The waves went inland as far as 10 miles. So you just need to check along the coastlines and go 10 miles inland and that should give you a general idea.

And the latest word is the death toll may reach 100K *before* disease and food shortages take their toll.

Yeah, I heard this morning they had broke 100K. When I posted the last time, they were at about 70K. I wonder if they finally got to some of the small isolated islands.

Hope your co-worker is OK, but it is a bit hard on the nails not knowing.
Luckily my mom got me a text message only a coulpe of hours after, telling me she was OK. Phew!

I know. Still no news, although I'm sure it's very hard to get a message out right now. Arg.
