Recommend anything!

Yup, that's right. In the spirit of my previous two posts taken to the logical extreme, this post is to recommend anything: food, art, books, philosophy, jokes, cars, quasars, blogs, refrigerators, whatever.

So recommend away!

The Count of Monte Cristo. The book, movies, anime, whatever you can get your hands on, but most especially the book.

Ditto! I also have been looking for more stuff on overtone singing/ the Harmonic Choir. It is like listening to Whales coming from a human mouth.

[identity profile] unrelatedwaffle.livejournal.com 2006-06-29 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Do you perchance mean Tuvan throat singing?

[identity profile] rayechu.livejournal.com 2006-06-29 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
It sounds very similar. I only heard a snippet in school this morning and found it really interesting. What I heard was slower and had no background music, but it is the same idea I think. I believe the man I heard was American, but learned from some Tibetan Monks? (Not sure the teacher was talking during the music so I wasn't paying attention to him) From my seat I could see the name of the record had "The Harmonic Choir" on it, but not much else because my eyes are pretty bad.

[identity profile] unrelatedwaffle.livejournal.com 2006-06-29 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the Tuvan throat singing is the stuff the monks in Tibet do. We did a unit on them in (of all things) physics class. It's really interesting from a scientific standpoint, as well.

alibris.com is the best place I've ever found to get used books you absolutely can't locate anywhere else.

The single most useful household appliance in our house is the panini grill, which improves any sandwich beyond recognition, makes shish kebab, grills all meats, and can handle waffles. We use it every day.

I needed a new writing program, because this computer didn't come with Word and I didn't want to buy it, and Jarte (http://www.jarte.com/) is seriously awesome. I adore it.

[identity profile] m00nface.livejournal.com 2006-06-29 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
I'm in a similar situation, and just downloaded it. It now occurs to me that maybe I should ask about specifics of its awesomeness.

[identity profile] wordsofastory.livejournal.com 2006-06-30 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
It has a nice word count feature, which is important to me because I write a lot of drabbles and has been the hardest tool to find in shareware word processing. But the reason I really like it is the 'favorite' tool, where you can add and take off files that will open automatically whenever you open the program. It makes it easy to organize my current projects and important files. The spell check's a little annoying- I like it better when a program underlines my mistakes right away- but it's much better at correcting the mistakes than Abiword, which is what I was using before. I'm a terrible speller, so half the time Abiword's spellcheck couldn't figure out the correct word I was guessing at, and Jarte does a much better job of it.

I like the tabs feature too, because I'm usually using several files at once, and that makes it easier. I'd probably still go for Word if I had a free copy, but Jarte is best shareware program I've seen yet.

Film:
If you're not familiar with the films of Akira Kurosawa, then shame on you.

Fiction:
Crocker gave me a copy of Alan Steele's Coyote a while back. Man's first exploration of deep space flight and colonization. Really good.

The Psi Corps trilogy (Babylon 5) was pretty good. It depicted the rise of telepathy in the human race, then Bester on the run.

Star Wars-wise, Timothy Zahn's Thrawn trilogy (Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, The Last Command) re-sparked interest back in about 1992-1993.

If you're looking for good Sci-Fi/War, Dan Abnett's Warhammer 40k series Gaunt's Ghosts is OUTSTANDING. He also did Double Eagle, set in the 40k universe, that has a kind of Memphis Belle/Tuskeegee Airmen feel to it.

Erotica:
Alison Tyler is the name you want if you're looking for erotica. Hard erotica is good to find...um...good erotica is hard to find. She's got a few credits as an author and is the editor of a number of great anthologies.

Anything else?

Now that's something I didn't think of right away - Erotica recommendations ^^.

But if you mention a Black Lace writer, I'd like to recommend the Black Lace line of erotica and especially Emma Holly, who has quite a few fantasy and historical romance (with more than usual steamy scenes) in even the regular publishing lanes.

Attempting to communicate entirely through gestures and inarticulate noises for an entire day without anybody noticing is pretty fun. It gets tricky about midway through any conversation about the werewolf-private-eye book you're reading, though.

Food!

[identity profile] puppleball.livejournal.com 2006-06-28 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
My recommendation is for Sunday Lunch: Thai Food at The Buddhist Center of Dallas (Wat Dallas). Vendors set up outside and sell various food stuffs: Sticky Rice, Som Tom (made right there in front of you with any adjustments you want), Isan grilled pork, chicken satay, fish soup, various desserts, thai tea, pretty reasonably priced. There's covered picnic tables to eat at. Starts around noon, breaks down around 5.

Computer-related: Linux instead of Windows. The reasons are endless. And barring that, I recommend using pretty much any browser on a Windows machine other than IE.

Music: Tom McRae is my favorite musician that virtually no one's ever heard of. Powerful, interesting lyrics; good voice; songs that hold up well under a lot of listening. And October Project is lovely.

Blog: Adam Stephanides (http://completelyfutile.blogspot.com/) does a good round-up of comics and manga (and does a thorough dissection of each new English volume of my favorite manga as it comes out, which is a huge plus for me).

Manga: Fruits Basket, for pure brilliance and heartbreak under a sweet surface.

Food: Mochi ice. Blueberry milkshakes. Upton Tea's Mélange du Chamonix (http://www.uptontea.com/shopcart/item.asp?from=catalog.asp&itemID=TE94&begin=10&parent=Teas%3EMiscellaneous%3EFlavored&category=Black&sortMethod=0&categoryID=32). Ben & Jerry's Chocolate Therapy.

Socks: Sock Dreams (http://www.sock-dreams.com/_shop/edit/index.php) converted me to funky socks.

Domestic television: Veronica Mars.

Misc. creative outlets: National Novel Writing Month (http://www.nanowrimo.org/).

Stores: If anyone's near Toronto, Bakka-Phoenix (http://bakkaphoenixbooks.com/) is Canada's oldest sci-fi bookstore.

TV: Spooks (known as MI-5 in the states). Pretty British actors and extraordinarily gutsy storytelling. If you like spy shows but can't suspend your disbelief enough to watch Alias or 24, try this.

TV
Ouran High School Host Club - Its like drinking root bear, only instead of loud burps, you get belly laughs.

COMIC
The Eternals is off to a great start, but currently, Eric Powell's THE GOON owns my soul like Lucifer.

MANGA
I like Claymore. The art is... stylized, but its very cool.

WEBCOMIC
Templar, Arizona. Spike owns my other soul with her beautiful lines.

MOVIE
When the Last Sword is Drawn is like the Alamo, only with swords. Also recently watched Bang Rajan, which I think my wife enjoyed for the plethora of pectorals.

BOOK
I've recently been consumed by Baen's free library, and am voraciously reading through pulpy science fiction and alternate history'n'stuff.

Recommended:

Books: the Dragon Jousters series by Mercedes Lackey.

Movies: Stargate. Most sci-fi movies don't deal with the obvious linguistic difficulties of first contact. Stargate does. Plus, the main character, who saves the day and gets the girl, is a geek!

Music: Tatterdemalion. (http://www.razorgeisha.com/AMD) Kickass dark electronica.

Food: Red curry, from Lemongrass in Olympia.

TV: MythBusters. Wakes up your inner explosophiliac and your inner geek at the same time. It's loads of fun.

Body Shop Olive Glossing Shampoo & Conditioner. My hair was previously quite shiny, but now it is *SHINY*.

Also from the Body Shop, their lip stain. It's like SF lip dye, only it exists now! (And wears off after several hours rather than several days.) It's a thin liquid that sinks in, so it doesn't feel like anything, wear off in abrupt ways, or basically cause your mouth to feel or behave any different than if it were naked. It'll just look a darker shade of its usual color.

Most makeup is much too much trouble for me, but I occasionally remember to put this on.

There. I hardly ever get to recommend non-entertainment things.

My recommendation is a simple food item that is easy to make, satisfying on many levels, and perfect for any occasion.

PBJ&C

What you will need:
2 slices of bread
peanut butter
strawberry jelly
cheetos (traditional crunchy variety)

Use peanut butter, strawberry jelly, and bread to construct a standard PB&J sammich. Prior to closure, add cheetos to an approximate depth of two inches - losely packed - into the middle of the sammich. The resulting foodstuff will provide a nice balance of flavors as well as an excellent blend of sticky, creamy, bready, and crunchy textures. Always a surefire crowd pleaser, especially when served with a tall glass of nicely chilled whole or skim milk which adds a crisp yet creamy countpoint to the flavor medly. WARNING: there may be temptation to experiment with alternative jellies, but this temptation must be resisted at all costs! It is important to note that only strawberry will properly accentuate the fake cheesey goodness of the cheetos without overpowering it to the point of mockery.

Hey, I hear that Onmiyoji movie RAWKS!

Both Onmyoujis are actually very cheesy which intrigues me because it's cheesy in what feels like a western way. So maybe they were trying to make a cheesy western film about a Heian diviner. Or maybe there's a general cheesy source that everyone uses. It's utterly different from the Seimei novels and manga (err- the novels/ manga in the Yumemakura line of descent: there are others) but the (male) novelist had a lot of input into the film and apparently insisted on the m/m subtext.

But mostly-- Nomura Manzou has what the Chinese call 'peach-flower eyes' which are those tilted eyes that fox spirits have, so he actually looks like he might be a fox spirit's son, which nobody else's Seimei does. Worth seeing for him alone.

livejournal popularity (http://trustmetrics.relativestate.net/ljpopularity.php?name=sub_divided).

It works by assigning every livejournal user a livrank, which is like pagerank but with "links in" replaced with "friends of". (So I have a high overall rank because I'm mutually friended to lots of really cool people, but a low in-flist rank because I'm friended to lots of really cool people.) The stats are out of date by maybe four months, but it's still pretty neat.

Planetes is truly the most satisfying anime series I have ever seen, and certainly the best of the last three years (though Mai-HiME pips a close second).

Of all the castles in England, I recommend Windsor as the most impressive to see.

If you ever want to learn 2,000 kanji, I recommend the Heisig system, by which I think I'll be able to learn the lot in a month and remember them for years.

Food: if you can find it, almond tofu. Oh, man, it is Teh Yum.

Drink: A drink I concocted in college called a Romanov. Based on a White Russian, only MORE. Instead of milk for a base, use heavy whipping cream. Then, add Kahlua, Godiva's chocolate liqueur, coffee-flavored Stoli's vodka, (or if you can't find the coffee stoli, Godiva's cappuccino-flavored liqueur and regular Stoli's).

Art: Takato Yamamoto (http://www.mondobizzarro.net/gallery/artists/yamamoto.php). Just...wow. I saw his pic Cradle of Death (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v490/homasse/random/Cradle_of_death.jpg) and decided I had to find the artbooks. Because yes.

Books: Kafka by the Shore by Haruki Murakami. Because yes. Also, the Griffin and Sabine series. Well, the first trilogy, at least. And "The Battle For God" by Karen Armstrong, which explains mythos, logos, and why fundies hate everybody.

Movies: Battle Royale. Because gaaaah. Also, Juon. Because GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!

Music: Jesus Christ Superstar: A Resurrection. It has the Indigo Girls in it as Jesus and Mary Magdelene! And the sexiest version of "Simon Zealotes" *ever*. And anything by Jay Chou or JJ Lin, because understanding your music is for wimps.

Manga: Because I can't recc these enough: "Sanctuary" and "Banana Fish."

American Comics: Kingdom Come. Because Alex Ross's art is *damn*. And Strangers in Paradise.

TV: Lost. Because....yes. Sayiiiiiiiiiiid. *ahem* And, you know, that whole "plot" thing. Sayiiiiiiiiid
