Hong Kong job? It's got to be Chinese translations/ transliterations. I watched some One Piece subs that were hilariously awful. "Sanji" became "Haingis". "Nico Robin" became "Nickelbao".
There was also a very unfortunate sub of Hikaru no Go in which all the characters simply had Chinese pronunciations of their kanji. That was annoying enough until the point when the subtitles simply cut out for an entire DVD. (I guess that's the price you pay for buying anime in Singapore.) But anyway, now I know that Hikaru's name in Chinese is evidently Kanzie. For all the good that does me...
