Obligatory cat squee-ing

I went by the local animal shelter and adopted a cat today. She's adapted amazingly quickly - she hid in a space where two bookshelves on different walls almost meet, forming a cat-sized space, but I eventually tempted her out with some tuna. She goes and hides under the sofa for a while, and then when I talk to her or bend over and look at her, she comes out and purrs at me. She'll follow me around the apartment and explore whatever room I'm in, then go hide for a while. So - she likes me but is a bit weirded out by the new surroundings. She doesn't like those spring doorstops - the ones that go Boioioioioioioioioioingggggggg! when you hit them. I accidentally bumped into one, and she stared at it, and I hit it a couple more times and the fur along her spine started to rise. And every so often she'll wander over towards the door and stare at the doorstop for a few seconds.

She came to the shelter as a quarantine animal - she was involved in a fight with a dog, and when the dog's owner separated them, she bit him (well, duh! that's what happens when you interfere in catfights) and was taken in for rabies observation. I have no idea if her owners surrendered her, if her owners didn't know she was taken in, or if the dog's owner owned her also and decided not to have both of them. As friendly as she is, she was well taken care of. She doesn't play well with others - she wasn't on her best behavior at the shelter because she didn't like all the other cats and the shelter guy was a bit surprised that I took her over friendlier-acting cats, but I'm a sucker for the cats that aren't as adoptable as others.

Obviously, she has no name yet. I'm waiting a bit to see what her personality is. The people at the shelter had "Nala" on her cage, and that might or might not stick.

I'm only going to inflict this tiny little picture on you here: For others, click on these links:

Cat standing next to the new dresser, taken because Mom hasn't seen the dresser yet.
Cat from the front. Yellow eyes. She's a tabby, of the striped variety instead of the spotted variety.
Cat from the side so you can see her coat pattern.

Awww! My Nuala is similar, but long-haired and the stripes are more broken up.

I'm impressed at the spick-and-spanness of your apartment, by the way...

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2004-12-13 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
You may rest assured the spic-and-span thing is only temporary. I usually store everything I own spread across the floor and other surfaces. :) I cleaned up for the party last night, and entropy will slowly take over. Hopefully not too quickly, since my mother is coming up for Christmas.

I'm thinking that an African name might suit here, and I seem to have conceived a desire for an ancient Nubian name, for no good reason. I can't find any good source online, so I may have to break down and use an actual book from the library at work. If I can't find a good book on ancient Nubia, I'll see if I can find a good list of names associated with the Nubian dynasty in Egypt.

The cat has now discovered that she can go into my room, sit on a bench, and peer through the blinds at the parking lot outside.

She's my first cat all on my own - I was living with Mom for five years previously while paying on student loans and working, and then I moved up to Dallas for grad school and didn't ahve the money for a cat. But now I have a Real Job (tm) and can afford vet bills and cat food and things like that, so I FINALLY have my cat! Wheeee!

[identity profile] tokyoghoststory.livejournal.com 2004-12-13 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
yeah! i'm moving out of here in a few months while attempting to make flow for grad school but mom won't let me have a cat where she is. which makes me so sad. so its fish...

Thank you!

Beautiful cat.
*whine* I want a kitty.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2004-12-13 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
I have been jonesing for one for two years now, but that whole "responsibility" thing prevented me from getting one until now. Whee!

[identity profile] emtigereyes.livejournal.com 2004-12-14 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I know how that goes.
Right now, the main deterrent is having cat food for pets...
But they are cute cat food (rats and birds, for those who don't know)

Cute!!!!

I'm also excited because she has the same swirly-coat pattern as my psycho-cat Merlin, I hardly ever see any other cats with the swirly-coat. :D

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2004-12-13 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
:D I didn't really know what she looked like until some time after I got her home - I knew she was a tabby, but in the shelter the attendant took her out, and she went over to me - probably didn't like the smell of other animals on him - so I couldn't get a good look at her then, and after I picked her out the attendant put her in the carrier, and when I got home, she zipped out of the carrier and behind a bookshelf as fast as she could. But she's out now. Spent the night in my closet on top of a pile of towels.

heehee! There's nothing she really has objected to yet, other than being picked up. She isn't a lap cat yet, either, but I expect that might come with time. And she's pretty good about wanting to be scratched when I want to scratch her, and wanting to go sit on the sofa and sleep when I want to be on the computer.

Very cute kitty.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2004-12-13 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Thankyou! XD

[identity profile] rustybitch.livejournal.com 2004-12-13 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
She sounds adorable. Not timid either, she's obviously willing to confront that evil doorstop.
I'm a sucker for tabbies.

If you're doing the christmas-tree thing, that could get interesting. Have camera at the ready, I'm also a sucker for "my-pet-made-a-disaster-area-of-my-home" pics. Always good for a laugh at other persons expence...

[identity profile] rustybitch.livejournal.com 2004-12-13 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, and by the way. Why not name her for the egyptian godess with the cathead? We call her "Bast" here in Scandinavia, I believe.

[identity profile] lacewing.livejournal.com 2004-12-17 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
She's lovely!
My kitty had "Daisy' on her tag (if she'd been spot or somethng stupid like that I would have changed it right quick) She came to it when called so it stuck. ^_^ She's a good baby and very friendly, wonderful little baby.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2004-12-17 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
She actually looked at me once when I said "Nefer!" so I'm sticking with that for the time being. Mind you, she's looked at me when I said "Hey!" and "Kitty!" and when I've yelled "BECAUSE YOU'RE AN IDIOT!!" at the TV, so I don't hold any illusions that it really means anything to her. :)

[identity profile] lacewing.livejournal.com 2004-12-17 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
heehee well after awhile it will. She'll learn that Nefer means "Her you" then of course she'll likely develope the cat's disdain of doing ANYTHING they are asked...
