And next up...

I was overcome with the girly-girliness of the previous fanart, so I had to do somethign angular and shounen next, to get the girl-cooties off.

This time, doing some more experimenting with OpenCanvas. Gotta say, cel coloring with Photoshop is somewhat easier. :D The inking is nicer in OC, and the ability to use a pen tool for the shading is good, because the ends are smoother, so there's less going in close-up and smoothing out the edges of the colors.

Love the lyrics in the background ^^ Something that you might try is doing the lineart and saving it as a BMP or PSD to color in photoshop. I often work between OC and Photoshop. The only thing that never translates well into a PSD format is the 'Addition' layer in OC on which I do my highlighting.

:D I was casting about for something to put in the background when "Teenage Dirtbag" popped up in rotation on the iPod, and it seemed like a proper Kubo Tite-type background.

I'm torn on the cel coloring, actually. Photoshop seemed easier in ways I can't quite put my finger on, but the Utena/Anthy pic took about 50% again longer than it had to because after zooming out enough to see and to make long, flowing strokes of shading, I'd have to zoom in to pixel size and smooth the edges of all the lines to take care of wibbly bits. With the pen tools in OC, I didn't have to do that as much.

I started using the Multiply and Add layers, and then just gave up and painted darker and lighter colors on. :D

I don't think the polygonal select fill is as smooth or accurate as the poly select in Photoshop. That makes it difficult for me to cel-shade in OC. But like you said, the pen tools are ♥worthy.

Do you have a version with tones? Those create some fun effects too.

Yes - I got the trial of the latest, spiffiest version which does almost everything that the full version does, except save pen tools and, as far as I can tell, play event files (suck!), for 30 days. I've seen the tone tools, but haven't played with them yet.

Oh yeah - and when I started using the poly select, I was all WTF?! :) I ended up just getting a big, fat pen and using the tapering for the dark orange points with a bit of smoothing, although I used the poly select for the hair highlights.

Oh - is there something like the transparent lock in PS, where you can color on the color but not on the transparent parts of that layer?

Embarrassingly enough... I'm not really sure if that feature's on there. I've never used it myself.

I use it when cel shading in PS - instead of selecting and filling, I usually lock the transparency and just paint the shading on, switching between the base color and the shading as necessary to refine. :D

Yep, Ichigo is about as angular and shonen as you get. XD

Hee. :D

I adore that. The attitude just about jumps off the page.

Thank you. :D I realized after I posted it that if I tilt my head sideways I can see how his facial proportions are messed up, but they look OK when I've got my head straight on.

My solution to this is not to tilt my head.
