THank you! It's loosely based on (as in, I looked at it once, a week ago) a Mello/Mat fanart that keelieinblack found, but I've deliberately not gone back to look at it, otherwise I might borrow too much from it.

Thank you! I'm not really sticking to the original style, but I still had the hardest time trying to get Utena's face to look enough like her that you could tell it was her without the hairstyle, and it ended up being all down to the chin shape. Which is odd, because it's actually a touch more rounded in the movie (and in the manga of the movie, which I'm using as reference).
Oh lord, should I admit that on seeing this I let out a silly squeak of glee?
The eyes! The eyelashes! And I am all wibbly over the way Utena's standing, the line of her shoulders and spine.
Er, if I go this mad over the unfinished piece, the finished one might drive me completely 'round the bend. But there simply isn't enough good fanart for this series, so I think I'm justified.

After I get this done, i'm going to continue looking through that fanart trove for more pose/composition ideas. It seems to have worked (and god knows I'm nowhere near through all of it yet).
Oh, wow, that's great to hear! If something from the horde could give you a little inspiration, then it was completely worth putting the darn thing together. :D
It's a great reasource. :D Of course, I keep looking at it and seeing, say, a really dynamic picture of Mello and I say "That's a great pose! I want to draw it!" And then I start thinking of who I want to draw in that pose, and it turns out to be ... Mello. And so on. *sigh* I need my imagination to turn back on, plzkthx.
