I've read up through the US releases of the manga and I am happy to say that I really haven't the slightest idea of which character in the Soul Reapers is who, other than Mr. Creepy and Renji. :D

Heh. I think maybe if I watched the anime I'd have a better idea of who was who, but in text they all just blend together into one big Japanese mass o'syllables. Which is why I'm surprised I got Gin, because I was expecting to get one of the Random Mass o'Undifferentiated Characters.

You may remember Kurotsuchi as the tall guy with an all-black face whose vice captain is his daughter who is also his sick science experiment.

Byakuya is Rukia's older brother and Renji's vice captain, the one with a stick up his ass.

The rings are a Kuchichi family heirloom, they're Traditional. (My evilness-radar was so off on this series, I was convinced Byakuya was the traitor because I could not envision anyone taking honor and propriety that seriously.)

(It's fairly obvious that Gin is evil, though, or at least Not For the Protagonist, since he's got silver/grey hair. I'm not sure that I've ever seen more than a few silver/grey-haired non-old characters who were good - Kakashi and Yuki Sohma being exceptions to the rule.)

The surprise in Gin's case isn't that he's evil -- hello, niko niko man! -- but that he regrets it, on some level, maybe. At least he appologizes to Rangiku (who you maybe remember as the one with the boobs, Hitsugaya (the short, grumpy one)'s vice-captain).

I've only read through the English releases - if it happened in them, I have no memory of it (honestly I have almost no memory of the actual story arc - it's all RUNRUNFIGHTRUNFIGHTRUNFIGHTFIGHT *break to make us like Renji* RUNRUNFIGHTRUNFIGHTRUNFIGHTFIGHT, with some Soul Reapers of various ranks jabbering at each other; I just keep reading because I love Kubo Tite's art and I expect to go back and re-read them someday, paying mroe attention to what's going on).
