Well, I've always seen Gojyo as the drummer and Goku as the insane lead guitarist that ends up smashing his guitar and stuff, mostly because it's easier to draw him doing some bizarre leap into the air with a guitar... it could work the other way ... Damn you for opening my mind to other possibilities!
Sanzo is, of course, the emo lead singer with a bottle of Jack Daniels and a cigarette onstage.
The *other* other problem is that I have no photo reference of crazy drumming that I can use - and I'm following the ref so closely at the moment, being unfamiliar with these particular instruments and how people look when playing them, that I'm not comfortable with using photos unless they're free of any restriction. My normal truly-free-stock-photo sources are not panning out for me for drummers. *sigh* *whine* *whimper*
If you're not planning on selling the image using stock images falls under fair use-- it's part of the learning process. You could try googling Keith or Ringo.
I sell fanart at anime conventions, and this picture is a prime candidate for that. :) I'm being hyper-conservative with it, but considering that I got the basic Hakkai outline by printing out the image reference in blues, then sketching my lines in on top of that, even though I've done a bit of changing, I don't think I've done enough to satisfy myself that it's fair use, so I'm sticking to pics that explicitly allow free noncommercial and commercial use. I just can't find any pictures of drummers where they're not obscured by the front men, or where they're going crazy.
I'll end up finding other photos and using them as regular reference if I have to (not tracing the major lines but making them up myself), but there's a certain level of draftsmanship in Hakkai that I'd like to keep in the other three panels, and it's damn hard to do that when I'm unfamiliar with the instruments and how the body moves when they're being played.
I'd try any Who concert video, then and try grabbing a screencap from there-- that might help more, actually. If you can find this (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0122689/) video, I know Moon's performance was well-filmed there-- and amazing.
Not that I'm telling you what to do, even though I, er, totally am.
:) I don't mind. The only problem with video is that the sort of video I'm likely to be able to find online won't be of a good enough quality to be able to blow up and see anything. Scroll down to see my next answer to rachelmanija to see what I'm talking about.
Plus there's that whole time factor - I've spent probably a good three hours over two days looking for useful photos for this project, and if it gets too much longer, it becomes effort that could be much better used by putting towards pictures I'm *actively* drawing.
I know I'm being annoying by shooting down every option that people offer, but there's a certain quality I want to keep this particular project at that I can't do any other way. Maybe in a year or two my skills will be improved enough to do it freehand, but not at the moment.
That'd be wonderful. I found something on one of the Deviantart stock acocunts that *might* work, but it's overexposed so the entire left half of the drummer is washed out. Not that it's *that* much of a problem, since the panel is only 2.5" wide so I'll end up cutting part of it off no matter what I do, but it's nice to be able to pick and choose what I'm going to show.
She gave me http://www.drummerworld.com/, which has lots of drumming-- you still have the copyright issue but you might be able to put a couple pictures together-- and her Stuart Copeland photos, here, (http://www.sockiipress.org/copeland/images.html) ditto.
You could always have him with the drumsticks, posing in front of his kit...
THanks - good for general refernce, although I can't do what I did for Hakkai with any of those, since they're all copyright to someone. :)
I would prefer to find a copyright-free photo, because I can't get as precise with freehand drawing as I did with Hakkai -- fading the photo, drawing the major lines on it ... er, why don't I just point you to this image (http://photobucket.com/albums/v209/telophase/?action=view¤t=web-bass-process.jpg), which shows how I got this pic. I"m not that good freehand, and if I end up doing freehand for the drummer, I'll have to go back and redo Hakkai to match, otherwise that panel will stick out badly.
It also shows how much I screwed up on the face, so I'm going to re-ink that to see if I can recapture the non-sucky quality of the pencilled version. *sigh*
No, no, Gojyo is the lead guitarist and Goku is the insane drummer, because girls are always fawning over the lead guitarist, whose other occupation is making drummer jokes. It's well known that drummers are insane.

If Goku isn't the drummer, there is no logic or meaning in the world.
