I hate being allergic to nickel. It's a common allergy, but what it means is that cheap earrings hurt my ears. And when the tiny wire loops that I have in my ears have the hypoallergenic coating start to flake off, it's painful. And I've slowly managed to go through all my surgical-steel/hypoallergenic coated earrings, so it means I have to go find some more now. Phooey.

im allergic to anything they've ever put in an earing. even gold ones. -_-. i only wear natural ones now. i have on a pair of horn. i can also only wear surgical steal and white gold.

weird

I'm not that bad. Silver's fine, surgical steel's fine. Only it seems all the ones that claim to be surgical steel are instead plated with it or something like that, because after a while, it flakes off or rubs thin or something and my ear gets inflamed and painful and prone to infection again.

[identity profile] tokyoghoststory.livejournal.com 2006-04-12 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
:( and those little lobe inflmations/infections are awful! i stretched my ears and now theyve never been better. how awkward is that.

Interesting...I've never been tested for it, but I wonder if that's my problem...most earrings, unless a high karat of gold, make my ears do weird, painful things....

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-04-12 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I've never been formally tested, but after years upon years of wearing earrings, it's consistent - base metals make my ears get inflamed and painful, surgical steel and precious metals don't.
ext_1502: (not enough (base by me))

Same here -- except that I tend to lose earings before I can wear them out. XD I also get rashes from cheap watches, but luckily those are less common than cheap earings.

I had the most awesome non-painful earrings when I was 3 or 4: brightly coloured animals made out of a rubbery plastic. I've been looking for more for years, since I only have one pair left, but it seems the '80s took them when they left.

I bet it's the earring industry, trying to make people pay more and more. :D

Check your local craft store. I know mine had the hypoallergenic nickel-free backings. You may not be able to replace the stud-type (though they might have had those too.) earrings, but anything dangly just takes a minute to replace the part that goes in your ear.

^That was me. Somehow I got logged off.

I could get you some earrings. What kind do you like, ie, posts, dangly, elaborate, plain, gold, silver, "playful" vs. "classic," what color stones, etc?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-04-12 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Oh cool! Thanks! :D I tend to like either very plain, simple studs and hoops, or ones that look vaguely vintage, like the 1928 brand (http://www.1928.com/pages-main/category-22_41/1928-jewelry-earrings.html?zenid=76b54287fe2b26130183dc87034fe3d9). (Except for the ones with excess danglys hanging off the main body of the earring, if that makes sense).

Metal and color doesn't matter too much - I don't try to match my earrings to what I'm wearing or anything, although anything that looks like amber is an instant win. XD As for posts or dangly, plain or elaborate - I've got 3 hole sin one ear and 2 in the other, and I tend to do simple hoops or studs in the upper holes and (when I bother to wear more elaborate ones), the more elaborate ones in the lower holes.

I'd probably take "classic" over "playful", if "playful" means 1980s-stype plasticy styles. I wore those throughout the 80s and feel no need to return to that. XD

I think if it's bigger than a tiny stud, I go for dangly, because my jaw is very wide and anything that looks like a button there makes it even wider.
If you can get any sort of useful info out of that ... :D

One thing that I found made some pairs of cheap earrings wearable for me once they started to wear through, was to dip the posts in triple antibiotic ointment before putting them in my ears. But I have been sticking to silver for quite some time now, so I haven't tried that lately. I did it regularly though and it worked.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-04-12 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
I actually do that once they start going, but this last one was just way too strong for that. :D

[identity profile] tprjones.livejournal.com 2006-04-12 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
It's been too long so that I don't remember the details anymore, but I bet it's actually pretty easy to reclad those things in silver or something with a simple electrochemical reaction. Basically hook a 9-volt up to 'em and dip 'em in a solution for an hour or two, and all fixxored!!

I'll have to see what I can dig up.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-04-12 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, they're like three bucks. Not really worth going to a lot of trouble. :D

[identity profile] rabican.livejournal.com 2006-04-12 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure there are places where you can buy rubber or silicone "caps" for earring posts ... I am unsure where at the moment, but I could look this weekend if you like! I suspect I first saw them in a jewelry supplies catalogue.

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-04-12 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
If you happen to find the info, that'd be nice, but don't put yourself out too much - I usually just put in studs or hoops and forget about them. XD

I've been trying to wear different earrings more in the lowest holes, jsut because my hair is short now so tehy don't get lost, but my natural apathy has so far defeated all. XD

Earrings...

Well, I don't know you, aside from reading your posts... but I would like to get back at thank you for making me go out and buy Death Note, Blade of the Immortal, and Saiyuki based on your enthusiastic support of said manga.

I can make sterling silver wire hoop earrings. For nearly no cost to me. So if you want a new set... free... I think I set LJ up to email me replies...

Oh, cool! Thanks! XD

*pokes around LJ a bit* Ah - manga-reading librarian! *adds* XD

I post rather infrequently! But I read a lot and because (bonus) I work in a private high school with a rather liberal outlook, I can put many interesting things into the collection...

Oh, and I can be emailed at girlgenius on gmail.

Cool. :D At my previous job I was a slide librarian in the Architecture department at A&M and I abused used my powers to put a few things into the collection that otherwise would never have gotten there - some of Dave McKean and David Carson's work, costumes for Bram Stoker's Dracula by Eiko, and so on. XD
