If you want it to say anything let me know, but it's so close to the 40K limit that snazzy animated text probably won't work. My only idea is "KOUGA SMASH!" but I'm having flashbacks to the "RODERICK USHER SMASH!" wank on fandomw_wank.

Huh. Guess I accidentally set my default icon to be YapYapYap, but since it so accurately describes Livejournal, I don't think I'll change it just yet.

Good lord, what do you use to make these icons? I was playing yesterday and yeah....utter crap.

I like the YapYapYap....it is a really good example of this system, especially when we just post random yappings. :D

Virtual Dub (and now VirtualDubMod, for recent formats like .ogm), which is a free utility for Windows. It'll advance things frame-by-frame, *and* you can copy frames to your clipboard. Then I paste them into Photoshop, on top of each other with each frame to its own layer, crop to square, shrink to 100x100, then switch to ImageReady to make the actual animated gif. I could probably paste directly into ImageReady and do all the cropping and stuff there, come to think of it...

Once I get into ImageReady and make the gif, I then notice it's like 200K and start throwing out frames and shrinking the dimensions and taking the colors down from 64 to 32 to 16 to get it to fit in LJ's 40K limit, and then back to Photoshop to drop in any text.

Sounds like a lot of work, but it's easier to do than say - the most difficult part is getting it into the right size limit. :) The fewer frames, the smaller it is - Kouga up there started as 34 frames, and I had to drop almost half of them.

Virtual Dub is the only thing I haven't played with there... :D You *might* be able to skip the first photoshop step....depends on if there's much in the way of brush or filter work involved....ImageReady doesn't much care for that...

I was trying to do one of those nifty little scratchy type ones...just wasn't happening though. 'Course, me and the free account has kinda kept me from going icon crazy....I could...... ;D

That's why I love my Journalfen account - I only use it to post to fandom_wank and the various other wank communities there, but I paid for an account once I got a Real Job [tm], and I can have up to 500 icons. So I should have an icon for every possible reference, reaction, and emotion before too long...
