I think that may be the freak storm I was thinking of - I've read accounts here and there, and there was a book about a National Heritage house I read that lost a lot of trees in it, IIRC.
My biggest acquaintance with freak UK weather was the three weeks I spent in Shropshire working with teh Shropshire Archives for an internship.
