I knew someone who had six toes (real toes, not five and a boneless lump) on each foot. She told me that it was a mutation passed through the maternal line, and that the males (like one of her uncles) sometimes had six toes and six fingers-- again, complete, functional fingers.
You gotta wonder, because it's usually got a penciller *and* and inker, so at least two sets of eyes pass over that. Mind you, when you've had three hours of sleep in the past 36 hours and are living on No-Doz and espresso because your deadline is breathing down your neck, I'm sure it's fairly easy to miss some details. :D
* Actually, I'm predicting it's the inker's fault: I bet in at least some cases the penciller drew the hand one way, and adjusted a finger, then failed to fully erase the faulty finger, and the inker, working on deadline, inked them all without thinking. XD
*falls on floor giggling* It's strange because just as I was reading that comment, my roommate was quoting "life IS pain. Anyone who says otherwise is selling something."
*g* Totally random, one of the Japanese kids at an elementary school I teach at only has three fingers and a thumb, and his feet are the same. His middle two fingers are merged into one really thick finger.
...and, me, being a Nightcrawler fangirl, thought to myself, "That would have been the COOLEST THING EVER if the middle fingers had merged with the outer fingers instead." >XD
ANd he was creative when they were supposed to be holding up fingers for numbers I said. That's how I know about his toes. >XD
In my 3D class we're supposed to make mutated animals of some form or another, but one of the handouts we got was about Eric Duyckaerts' two thumbed hand proposal.
Six fingers man...six fingers! Its a conspiracy and the universities are in on it! Makes me glad I've kept my tin foil hat on. ^_^

According to said classes, the sixth finger is usually a boneless lump rather than a functioning digit, but still.
