in breaking news!

The worrisome trend of six-fingered characters in manga! Even our dear Obata of Death Note fame has fallen victim!

That's awesome!

THE WORLD MUST KNOW!!

Not all human beings have five fingers. There's a gene for six fingers--dominant, if I recall my high school science classes correctly.

According to said classes, the sixth finger is usually a boneless lump rather than a functioning digit, but still.

I knew someone who had six toes (real toes, not five and a boneless lump) on each foot. She told me that it was a mutation passed through the maternal line, and that the males (like one of her uncles) sometimes had six toes and six fingers-- again, complete, functional fingers.

Dude, five fingers is hard ENOUGH to fit in...

[identity profile] wordsofastory.livejournal.com 2006-03-05 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
No, the really weird trend in manga is all the one-eyed characters! I was compiling a list in my journal a while ago.

[identity profile] flyingpeachbun.livejournal.com 2006-03-05 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
LOL That's great XD The prince of tennis one is just all screwed up, I wonder how they could miss that...

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-03-05 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
You gotta wonder, because it's usually got a penciller *and* and inker, so at least two sets of eyes pass over that. Mind you, when you've had three hours of sleep in the past 36 hours and are living on No-Doz and espresso because your deadline is breathing down your neck, I'm sure it's fairly easy to miss some details. :D

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-03-05 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
* Actually, I'm predicting it's the inker's fault: I bet in at least some cases the penciller drew the hand one way, and adjusted a finger, then failed to fully erase the faulty finger, and the inker, working on deadline, inked them all without thinking. XD

[identity profile] flyingpeachbun.livejournal.com 2006-03-05 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, I was thinking it might be something like that X3 mmmmmm No-Doz!

[identity profile] rabican.livejournal.com 2006-03-05 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
Speaking of which, guess who just got Death Note volume 1?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-03-05 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
w00t!

[identity profile] obviouslyanon.livejournal.com 2006-03-05 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
This is the news that SHOULD be reported!

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-03-05 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
DAMN STRAIGHT!

[identity profile] codfishbunny.livejournal.com 2006-03-05 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
*flashes back to Princess Bride*

[identity profile] ninja-tech.livejournal.com 2006-03-05 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
*falls on floor giggling* It's strange because just as I was reading that comment, my roommate was quoting "life IS pain. Anyone who says otherwise is selling something."

[identity profile] the-z.livejournal.com 2006-03-05 11:27 am (UTC)(link)
I actually have a character with six fingers! I'm afraid of drawing him with five :(

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-03-05 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
So if you screw up and draw him with five, it'll be all "O NO! THE PLAGUE OF FIVE-FINGERED CHARACTERS!"

[identity profile] homasse.livejournal.com 2006-03-05 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
*g* Totally random, one of the Japanese kids at an elementary school I teach at only has three fingers and a thumb, and his feet are the same. His middle two fingers are merged into one really thick finger.

...and, me, being a Nightcrawler fangirl, thought to myself, "That would have been the COOLEST THING EVER if the middle fingers had merged with the outer fingers instead." >XD

ANd he was creative when they were supposed to be holding up fingers for numbers I said. That's how I know about his toes. >XD

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-03-05 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Cool! XD

[identity profile] rachelmanija.livejournal.com 2006-03-05 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you criticising mutants? For shame!

[identity profile] cchan5000.livejournal.com 2006-03-05 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Quite the timely post I might add.

In my 3D class we're supposed to make mutated animals of some form or another, but one of the handouts we got was about Eric Duyckaerts' two thumbed hand proposal.

Six fingers man...six fingers! Its a conspiracy and the universities are in on it! Makes me glad I've kept my tin foil hat on. ^_^
