The periodic "Hi! Who are you?" post...

I've had enough of an influx of new people friending me that I figured I'd pop up another post saying hello to all of you and asking A/S/L who you are and why you're here other than my sparkling wit and adorable cat, of course.

No need to answer if you prefer to remain aloof and enigmatic. :D Old hands feel free to weigh in if you want.

My name is Niccole. I read you because you are interesting, and have similar likes. (kitties and manga to name a few) Your manga analysis are brillant and you write very well. I don't get the imps, but I love reading all of your reviews.

[identity profile] cynthia1960.livejournal.com 2006-01-18 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I like cats, manga, and BPAL, so we have some things in common.

[identity profile] awamiba.livejournal.com 2006-01-18 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm Lisa. We have books & general weirdness in common, not to mention Cepheid. You can't ever get away from Cepheid (not that I've tried, but I know someone who has and I won't ever let her forget!). Bwahaha. Besides, who can deny the kittyspam and someone who posts room redecorations?

I've seen you commenting in some other journals I read over the past few months, and when I finally blitzed Death Note two weeks ago, and got to the Mello panel that you commonly use as an icon, I had this moment of "wait a minute... that's that crazyperson icon that that person was using... who was it now..." and re-looked up your journal, found that you had written quite a bit on Death Note and other subjects, and that you were also interested in composition. (The thing that I think sets your average manga apart from your average American comic is not so much quality of the art in general as, specifically, dynamic composition...)

So. Yeah. Came for the icon, stayed for the analyses.

As for me? I'm a grad student. Literary analysis and critical theory. Dabble in manga analysis, but haven't published any yet. Dabble in drawing comics, and more than dabble in writing. Friend people at random. (hi.)

Aloof and enigmatic? *looks in mirror to verify identity* BWA-HAH-Hah-hah-ha-hahaheeee*snort*

A/S/L? M/Yes/Houston I'm here for your sparkling wit and adorable cat, of course. Is more required?

Okay, okay. I continue to nurse my hopeless unrequited infatuation and via occasional reminders to you that I exist, I hope to further my (Not So) Subtle Plot of scoring the occasional hug at cons. (Zaftig redheaded talented artist with humor! And brains!BRAINS!!Mmmmmm...)

Erm. I mean, "I have fond memories from the LMB List". :-)

[identity profile] anno-domino.livejournal.com 2006-01-18 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Came for the comics/manga art analysis, stayed for the...well, mostly for that. :) But also because you are funny!

Of course, I haven't had time to be in fandom at *all* lately ARRGH GRR WHY REAL LIFE WHY.

[identity profile] tentopet.livejournal.com 2006-01-18 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey I had a couple ideas in case you liked them for more manga analyses. No big deal if you don't like 'em but I thought I'd throw them out there!

-A comparison of OEL titles and beginners in manga in Japan, to see if the mistakes and lack of this-and-that is more cultural or more a matter of inexperience (I've been very curious about this one), and whether inexperience manifests itself differently based on culture.

-A paneling analyzation of Hot Gimmick, to figure out WHY she makes us CARE.

-A survey of manga titles (preferrably diverse ones) that shows on average how many panels per page, and what percentage of those panels are __________ (eg. tilted shots, shots including backgrounds, extreme close-ups, establishing shots, bleeding panels, objects overlapping panels, etc.).

Fruits baskets

[identity profile] akemi-art.livejournal.com 2006-01-18 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
It's all about fruits baskets. I want to know when you'll find out the secret -- why a story with a premise like fruits baskets makes me cry. This secret you will ofcourse post on your manga analysis series right? right!??

Re: Fruits baskets

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-01-18 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, as soon as I figure out the secret, I'll let you know. XD

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-01-18 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I'm always open for suggestions, and I'm especially wondering about that first one, myself. Although it might be ahrd to find equal comparisons, since the Japanese model, IIRC, is usually to work in teams, with the artists first starting as assistants and gaining experience that way before they get their own title. Although I know that some aren't that way - ISTR something about manga competitions, and it might be worth trying to track down some winners of those and then comparing them to, say, the winners in RSOM. Hm. *ponders*

[identity profile] tammylee.livejournal.com 2006-01-18 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure actually! I think it arrived early last week? C. brings the mail in and I sometimes don't look at the pile for a few days.
XD

[identity profile] unrelatedwaffle.livejournal.com 2006-01-18 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I go by waffle, usually, or Momo (my real and true nickname, not some poser name I picked up after becoming a manga nut). I'm a college student at Macalester in St. Paul, and if I'm smiling, it's because I have a sketchbook in one hand and a foreign language book in the other.

I'm Jaimie, and I'm here because my cat has a crush on your cat. ;D

I guess I'm techincally an old hand, but as I never said why I friended you, figured that I might as well post now.

I think I was Googling "Saiyuki" or some other crazy such thing on a dark, lonely night when I found your manga analysis article on it. I was on LJ, you were a Saiyuki/Minekura-nut who wrote a very interesting article, and the rest, as they say, is history.

And you love Sanzo. 'Nuff said.

I got obsessed with Saiyuki and started looking for people writing smart things about it. You might well have ended up as a source in a research paper last semester, had my Bad Teacher not finally decided that manga did not, in fact, fall within the purview of a course called "Asian Narrative Art." Be thankful for your narrow escape; I kinda suck at research papers.

Also, just now I work in a library and am spending too much on BPAL. Naturally you are an important voice in the community of attractively-scented librarians.

[identity profile] eldanis.livejournal.com 2006-01-18 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't post much on lj (really the only interesting thing on my lj page is the link to my DA gallery, and I leave it to you to decide on the merit in even that), but I do read it regularly... got referred to your journal by my roomie, stalked for a few weeks, then added you to my friends list. I just find your journal a lot of fun to read, and your kitty doesn't hurt matters either ;) Oh... and I eventually plan on begging your advice on first-time print selling at an anime convention this spring *makes her best Goku grin*

(Anonymous) 2006-01-18 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
thnx, I kinda wondering some while. You are analizing manga very well, do you draw too?

[identity profile] telophase.livejournal.com 2006-01-18 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
telopahse.deviantart.com (http://telophase.deviantart.com). :D

I havne't been posting much art lately here or on DA because most of my art time has been taken up with a self-published comic I'm working on with [livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija. Which has blown by its deadline, but I can look down the final stretch and see that tehre might, possibly, be light at the end of the tunnel. XD

I'm a STALKER!

Shh.

I'm in the bushes. :)

[identity profile] aussa.livejournal.com 2006-01-19 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
I accidentaly found you, but I want to continue being your friend on LJ because you are so interesting and I love everything you have to say about manga.

Go Minnesota!

[identity profile] ninja-tech.livejournal.com 2006-01-19 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry to butt in, but would you be going to AnimeDetour in March?

[identity profile] ninja-tech.livejournal.com 2006-01-19 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Um, I don't think I'm an old hand, but I'm not brand-spanking new either. Hmmm...But I really love your kitty spam--oh! Meant to tell you that clipping Murphy's claws has solved the scratching problem, he has been saved from de-clawing. Huzzah!

Besides the fact that I always love librarian LJs and blogs, I have been meaning to read your manga analysises (<---how the heck do you pluralized that?!), but as of yet, have not gotten around to it. *cringe*
