AnimeFest Report

Long con. Am dead.

Roomed with [livejournal.com profile] yankeerose69 and [livejournal.com profile] herophelia and two other people, which was sort of odd since we all had vastly differeng schedules so that we were rarely all sleepign at the same time, and there was almost always someone sleeping in the room at any given time.

I seem to have contracted con crud in the form of some sort of upper-respiratory infection. Arg. As a temp, if I miss a day I miss that day's pay and tis a short week already. On the bright side, I got the formal offer letter from TCU so I get to tell Verizon bye-bye Tuesday, but since I ahve to give ten-ish days notice and they want me to start Sept 15th ... er, missing a day will be even ruder. Ah well.

Anyway, con. Nobody was in a buying mood. Artists alley, dealers, art show, all said that sales were significantly down from usual. I know I did worse than I did at A-Kon, even factoring in the smaller size of the show, but thanks to the art show and a gaggle of teenagers with a long-suffering mother on Monday afternoon, I think I can officially consider myself to have broken even from what I spent on the table, hotel, parking, and dealers' room. Thanks also to the unobservant parking attendant who looked at the *time* I arrived and not the *date* on my parking ticket, who charged me $5.25 when I was expecting to spend closer to $32 - 4 days parking at $8/day.

I threw things in art show at the last minute - didn't have any originals so I originally didn't bother with the art show, but they came by on Friday asking if anyone wanted to put stuff in since they had panels open, so I threw some prints in there. Glad I did, since two of them - the Naruto/Hogwarts crossover pic [livejournal.com profile] chibipoe requested, and the Jiraiya/Tsunade pic [livejournal.com profile] darkisawa requested went for $42 and $35 respectively. Did I mention I was selling them for $6 each in the artsits' alley? I think this calls for an emoticon. O.o Sold some prints for [livejournal.com profile] tesstrosa as well.

Any anime artists reading this who wants to know what to draw for cons, Sesshoumaru from Inu-Yasha was the #1 request I had. Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist was also asked for, and so were main characters from Full Metal Panic.

Met several people from various DA and LJ communities. Two of the [livejournal.com profile] death_note regulars showed up as L from Death Note and I cherish fond memories of going up one of the escalators as they were going down, and watching them ride the escalator in character.

There was also a conga line of about thirty people who were entirely too chipper on Monday morning not to be on drugs going in and out of the dealers' room and gaming room. I watched the people at the Security HQ desk give a standing ovation to the door nazi on duty at the gaming room, because he checked the badge of every single person in the line as they conga-ed into the room.

Forgot to add that I indulged in the risky busines sof artbook and doujinshi buying. It's risky because they're wrapped in plastic and you're not allowed to look inside, so you have to guess at the quality of the artwork inside. I know that in doujinshi circles, they get the best artist of the circle to do the cover, so you need to find the best cover artwork you can. With artbooks, you ahve to decide by the cover whther you think you'll like the artist if you're not fmailiar with them.

I managed to hit the jackpot all four times. I rumamged in the doujinshi bins marked YAOI - let me point out that if I can go by the three I got, they're really mostly PG/PG-13 shounen-ai and not explicit stuff and if I were a merchant carrying doujinshi I'd invest some time in flipping through them and separating out the explicit stuff from the non-explicit stuff so they could sell more of them to teenagers.

Anyway, I got a Saiyuki one whose art is the best fanart I've seen for Saiyuki. No clue what teh stories in it are about, excpet one seems to involve either Sanzo and Hakkai cross-dressing or a major case of mistaken identity and lookalikes. Anyone who reads Japanese and wants to see, let me know and I'll scan 'em in sometime. I also got a Shaman King one and a Fruits Basket one whose art were both pretty good, though not as good as the Saiyuki one.

The artbook was a major coup, also. Kaoru Fujiwara, who I'd never heard of, but whose graphic design and soft coloring I really like now. Will have to find more stuff by her.

And since I got asked for Sesshoumaru so many times, I went ahead and did a pencil version of him. Click for teh_pretty. Color version here, but I think it kinda sucks. Any resemblance to Kougaji from Saiyuki is entirely coincidental, I assure you. Entirely.

That's a new idea. I can see it now. "And now for our next report. Livejournal users beware. Teh cold virus has a new way of contracting itself!" ^_^ Heh.

If you asked me, the pic you drew, kinda reminded me of a cross between Nicholas D. Wolfwood, Roy, and....someother dude who's name escapes me. *Smacks herself* Ah well. I love it anyway. Now I just gotta get frames for everything and be happy happy.
