It does depend on the cat, though. Mine, I discovered, actually eats less when I free feed her. When I measure it out, she scarfs it all up, I guess because she's afraid ot'll be gone before she can eat it if she doesn't. Weird.
I'm slightly worried it's because I give her a few treats when I get home from work, but they're supposed to be good for her teeth, and they seem to have about the same nutritional and caloric content as regular cat food, so I don't think they're too much to blame.
Plus, I think both of us like the ritual, and they smell like dead fish, so she loves 'em.
XD My mom's cat is really pretty - the vet finally decided she was a calico, but she's mostly cream, with black and brown splotches here and there, and orange ears.
