Rearrange
telophase's Apartment!
This is the current floorplan of the living area (bedroom/bathroom/utility area cut off):

It's fairly close to the proper dimensions - I'm not sure about the angle that the angled wall is at - the desk ought to be taking up more space there - and with the desk in the way it's hard to get the measuring tape there to measure the length of those two walls and to calculate the angle with the Pythagorean Theorem. So, it's eyeballed and is not quite right.
ETA: This is the entire apartment floorplan. They've got the proportions off, too - the wall between the window and the angled wall is too big in mine and too small in theirs.
Anyway - here is a jpg with the floorplan and the new furniture added (plus extras of the stealth desk and the TV cart, since rotating them makes them fuzzy), if you feel like playing cut-and-paste. If you're got Photoshop, here is a zipped Photoshop file that has every piece of furniture on a different layer, for easy manipulation.
Color Code:
Black - It ain't movin'. The walls, of course, plus that dresser along the bottom wall (it's about 150 pounds and I can't physically move it) and the microwave cart with the microwave on it, since it eneds to be near the kitchen and there's no other place for it to go (there is no counter space in the kitchen).
Red - It's outta here. Just the stealth desk at the moment.
Green - I'm open to tossing this.
Blue - Current furniture that I'm keeping. The plastic chest of drawers I hate, but I need the storage space and it's short enough to tuck under the new desk and be hidden away (although that may take up too much leg space). I don't think the filing cabinet will fit under the new desk - it's 27" tall, and the new desk is 28 3/8" tall and I'm not sure how thick the top is. I can't fit both the plastic chest and the filing cabinet and have room for my legs, anyway.
Purple - (on the linked jpg, not on the image above) New furniture that is either purchased but not delivered, or will be purchased soon. The bookcases are approximate sizes, based on ones at Target I saw the other day (they're about 6 foot tall).
Details:
-- Note the light switch on the wall with the TV cart. I can't put a tall bookshelf there or it will be blocked - that's the porch light.
-- There is a pass-through from the kitchen to the dining area, about 4 foot off the ground, so no tall bookcases there, although I think all my other furniture fits under there.
-- "Short" are two short bookcases, about 3 foot tall.
-- The futon above is the size it is when in a couch shape. When it's a bed, the short edge is about 2 foot wider.
Likes And Dislikes:
-- See how all the furniture is ranged against the wall? I hate that - it'd be nice to actually use some of this open, flowing floorspace. The tall bookcases have to be against the wall (even though I'd love to use them as room dividers) because I'm in an apartment and can't really screw them into the wall or ceiling, but the two short bookcases are sturdy enough to stand by themselves, and I have that Japanese-look folding screen, which can all work as room dividers.
-- I have to be able to see the TV from the desk - that's how I manage to keep myself entertained when I'm drawing.
-- I do not want to sit with my back to the sliding glass door or to the open room when I'm at my desk. That makes me uncomfortable.
-- The Bigger Bookcases near the entrance are really heavy. I don't want to move them if I don't have to, but they're not black, so they can be moved if the room design is stunning enough. :) The four bookcases in the dining area are lighter and can be moved more easily, although it's a hassle, but if the design calls for it, the design calls for it.
-- The window in teh upper right is only 2.5 foot off the ground, so you can't really put anything in front of it. I'd kind of like to keep it open, because I have a Kitty Sill I'd like to install on it, so the cat can sit there comfortably. Right now she tends to camp out on top of the plastic chest there.
-- If you're tempted to try a reading nook ... well, the chair used to be in the center of the dining room area surrounded by bookcases and I never used it, and I never use the loveseat now. I might use a nook if the chair is near the window and I get another end table (yeah - I'm open to buying end tables, GOd only knows I need at least one more) to sit by it.
I think that's it. Feel free to ask questions, and I wanna see what you come up with. XD

This is just am amazingly annoying room layout, and my furniture is awful for it. I'm slowly getting rid of the bad stuff and replacing it with better stuss, but ... agh! (The futon and loveseat will probably be the next big pieces of furniture to be replaced, but it'll probably be next year by that time.)

I assumed when you said 'tv cart' it was mobile so you could change the orientation to face whereever you wished to sit?
When I was in school I had my desk facing my patio doors and I found it very restorative to be able to see outside.
I faced the chair and futon to each other for conversations? I'd probably add a round carpet to tie those two together as a little area?
I like using bookshelves back to back to create false 'walls' or room dividers butI am not sure of the stability of your shelves?
Anyhow! I hope you find some sort of idea for this?
=D

I'm not too sure about the stability of my shelves, either, but I know that the floor is a bit wonky - if I knew I could bolt one end to a wall, or use poles to anchor them to the ceiling (like some shelves I saw at IKEA), I'd use them as room dividers.
Thanks!

Second, the way you've got things set up now is functional and balanced but with the new stuff I understand your plight. Unfortunately the only advice I can give is that it is HORRIBLE feng shui to have a desk, chair, or bed in line with a door or window.
Energy supposedly flows to and from doors and windows (and toilets) so putting a place where you sit/sleep in front of them supposedly results in loss of energy, a feeling of being watched, and poor sleep. I wonder if the TV and stealth desk could switch places with the futon (dimensions are okay?) and if the bookshelves and the loveseat could change places? Finally, I'd block off the middle third section of that long furniture-wall and make a workstation for yourself, and invest in a tv table turner/rotating plate thingy, so you can position it for the desk, the futon, or the loveseat. Also, candles, mirrors, glass show cases, and plants can also really help liven up dead or problem areas, b/c they all reflect and double energy.
That's my two cents. Good luck! Love, Roo

The current setup isn't that functional, really - I don't have a really good workspace, because I need to spread out horizontally and I'm cramped in by a too-small desk with a humongoid printer and a scanner on it, and there's a bunch of dead space in the middle of the room - when you're sitting on the futon, the focal point is really the microwave. XD
I can get behind the door/window thing, just because I feel exposed when I'm sitting there. I hate having my back open. Anyway, the stealth desk and its difficult footprint is going, going, gone very very soon, to be replaced by a larger, rectangular one. :D

1) Do you really live in a roughly 22' by 23' efficiency? Wow, only 506 square feet! I am impressed.
2) Where are the bathroom and the closet? Am I correct to assume that "hallway" leads to these?
no subject
The bathroom is below the kitchen on this diagram, and the utility closet is across the hall from it. The entrance is really a 6' square space extending downwards from the above floorplan, but since there's no way to put anything in there, I didn't bother with drawing it in. :)

OK, one more stupid question - where is the passthrough from the kitchen to dining area? Above the loveseat?
I am glad to see I am not the only person using the dining area for something other than eating! It became my scrapbooking center because it has the best light in the townhouse (windows on three sides, plus a 150 watt low-hanging light fixture over the table) - important here in the Northwest with the lousy light. My son and I usually eat in front of the computer or TV anyway. :)

And every time I see/think the words "stealth desk", I giggle.

What I really want at the moment is to run out and get one of those books on living in small spaces, but every time I look through one of them, the solutions are pretty much "Build more cabinets!" and that's not really an option here.

I've just posted what I think is the best design I've come up with so far.

v1: eh. you're right, this is a sucktastic floor plan. (http://sillybean.net/floorplans/living-room.jpg)
v2: with screen placed to hide potentially messy desk from UPS man (http://sillybean.net/floorplans/living-room2.jpg)
v3: I used to use my file cabinet as an end table, so… (http://sillybean.net/floorplans/living-room3.jpg)

So the tall bookshelves have solid backing that you can't cut a hole out of and/or the switch is at the exact height of a shelf?
(My bookcases have cardboard backs.)

Plus, that means I wouldn't be able to put stuff on the shelf in front of it, and my bookcases get packed, since I'm a pack rat.
