Turner Classic Movies Ghibli Showings

TCM is showing Ghibli films on Thursday nights in January.

Cut-and-pasted direct froma friend's email:
In January, Turner Classic Movies will be showing Ghibli films every Thursday.
The schedule is below.

What's really cool about this? Well, every Thursday they'll show two films, and
they'll show them twice. First dubbed, and then they'll replay them in Japanese
with subtitles.

What's also really cool is that this will be the first time U.S. audiences will
have a chance to see the new English dub of My Neighbor Totoro (originally
slated to be released on DVD last August, pushed back to coincide with Howl's
Moving Castle this March). It would be the world premiere of it, but I believe
it has already been shown once at a film festival in Britain. The new English
dubs of the Ghibli films have been almost universally excellent, so hopes are
high for the quality.

It will also be the world premiere (I'm pretty sure) of the new English dub of
Whisper of the Heart. Yeah, I know, most of you have never even heard of this
film. It's good, you should check it out.

And, finally, on the last Thursday of the month they'll be showing Only
Yesterday. It will only be shown with subtitles, since an English dub of it
doesn't exist, and Buena Vista has said they have no intention of producing one
or releasing this film on DVD in the US. There's been no word as to who
produced the script which will be used for these subtitles. I have to say that
if you haven't seen this film, I highly, highly recommend it.

So, without further ado, the schedule:

Thursday, January 5
8:00pm: Spirited Away (2002 - English-language version)
10:15pm: Princess Mononoke (1997 - English-language version)

I've emailed a friend with TiVo with requests for the three movies I don't have copies of. XD I'd suggest hunting down someone with a TiVo or a VCR.

Hey, thanks for the heads-up! We did a run through Ghibli films over the past few months via Netflix, but a few, like Totoro, havnen't made it to DVD yet. Plus I can always watch a double-header of Spirited Away and Mononoke, which remain my favorites.

But gee, they're not showing Grave of the Fireflies. Wonder why? *g*

My initial reaction: OMGWHISPERSOFTHEHEARTTHEUNIVERSEISWONDERFUL.

After remembering that I don't have cable: ;__________;

But seriously, Whispers is my favorite Ghibli film. It's just so damn cute. Plus it has "Country Roads" in it, which makes me happy. Are they/have they releasing/released it on DVD?

I don't think I've ever wanted to accept a television channel as my personal lord and savior before now. DVR ownership for the win!

No idea. I'd starting hitting up friends with TiVo or VCR type things. :) I ahve. XD

Fortunately, I have a friend who has both (plus the cable, obviously). Now I just have to remember to tell her about it.

... retracted temporarily, as the husband expresses doubt that we even have TCM on our cheap-ass cable system...

That's odd, I've definitely rented a Totoro from Netflix; it only had the English track, though.

I can't make any promises, but I'll do my best. Ping me tomorrow on it.

Thanks. I'd originally asked Toby, but due to something-or-other he can record them, but can't transfer them. like I listened to the technical details? XD

I'll do my best to remember. :D
