Next Studio Ghibli movie

Cut-and-pasted from a friend's email to a mailing list:
Some few of you may have previously been aware that there were rumors that the next Ghibli film was going to be based on Le Guin's Earthsea. Well, it's no longer just a rumor.

Announcement blatantly copy-and-pasted from the Miyazaki mailing list:

Studio Ghibli has officially announced that their next feature film will be Gedo Senki (Gedo War History) [1], directed by Hayao Miyazaki's son, Goro Miyazaki. The film will be an adaptation of Ursula K Le Guin's "A Wizard of Earthsea," and will be released in the Japanese theatres in July 2006.

The Studio's official site has also undergone a revamp [2]. Details of the new film can be found there. There are also dedicated sections of production diary and director's diary. Goro Miyazaki has posted some comments on his father's opposition towards his work as a director.

Super-mondo KEEN! I love that series.

I can't decide whether this makes me excited or not. The end product will have to be better than the SciFi channel's adaptation (though I notice Ged is white in Ghibli's promo too), but after Howl's Moving Castle, I'm not sure it'll end up looking much like the source material. Also, Ged's War History? What?

Wow! I echo [livejournal.com profile] fourthage in being a little apprehensive (I read Howl's Moving Castle just before the movie came out and haven't seen it because I heard it was so different), but at least it will be better than any ordinary film adaptation. I hope.

Yeah, the movie is basically elements of the book picked here and there, recombined, and shaken with a heaping cupful of Miyazaki's anti-war stance. I certainly enjoyed it, and plan on buying the DVD, but it's not the book.

But movie!Howl is hot more appealing than book!Howl to me - I can see why Sophie would fall in love with movie!Howl, while her being in love with book!Howl seemed to come out of left field for me the first time I read the book (love it though I did - it's one of my favorites), mostly because when he was heartless he was so annoying I spent most of the book wanting to slap him. Which was, of course, the point. But still.

At the least it'll have to be better than the monstrosity that was the SciFi version.

Ah, thank you so much for posting this, as I never would have seen it on my own. Earthsea is one of my friend's favorite books, and it totally made her day to hear this news. Now I will have to re-read it before the movie comes out.

I just about creamed my pants when I saw this on Anime News Network. Whatever happens, it'll be visually stunning, and probably pretty interesting to boot (at least from a comp lit perspective, which is how I enjoyed Howl's Castle). :-D *droooools*

that's awesome. I rented the latest adaption from the store, I was shocked on how visually bad (cheesy) and uninteresting it was. It looked more like something from the 80's though that's no insult to Labyrinth, Willow, Ledgend and the rest as I did love them.

I looked up what Ms. Leguin had to say about it after I watched it and she pretty much blasted it:
